Concept : Get Data from Multiple Files in a Folder using Combine & Load
Question : You have a folder of monthly transaction extracts. You plan to create a report to analyze the transaction data. You receive the following email message: `Hi, I've put 24 files of monthly transaction data onto the shared drive. Files Transactions201801.csv through Transaction201812.csv have four columns while files Transactions201901.csv through Transaction201912.csv have the same four columns plus an additional three columns. Each file contains 10 to 50 transactions.You get data from the folder and select Combine & Load. The Combine Files dialog box is shown in the exhibit. (Click the Exhibit tab.)

Thanks for the great video. Anyway I have a doubt. if we choose sample file: "first file" do it means that only files from 2018 will bi loaded. It means not 24 files. So, now the fact is that 12 files are loaded only. So total quantity of rows now from 120 to 600 (instead of 240 to 1200). As a result , we can' be sure whether load time will be reduced if we choose option: "based on 200 rows". Please advise

At the time of loading, all the data in all the 24 files are read , however, they are not combined and imported into Power BI. While reading the data , before importing, the if data type is automatically detected based on top 200 rows, it would definitely be beneficial. Combining of the files happens only later. You may notice that in the source name all the files are listed, though the files are not combined. Hope that explains your query.

Thanks for your videos!! Curiously, when i tried to apply your first example today (loading the files based on the jan-2014 file), the data of the 2016 files loaded too (of course only the corresponding columns). Do you think this due to a new version of Power BI Desktop?

Hello Marcus, I tried Combine & Load in the newer version of Power BI and it works the same as shown in the video. If the first file is the one with the lesser number of columns, only those files with the lesser number of columns will be loaded. So please click on the dropdown at the First file and make sure that you are selecting the file with lesser number of columns and try again

Thank you so much for a very clear video. In the question, the file has only 50 rows so I am not sure that the option of based on first 200 rows would improve import times;

Hello Phuong, Thank you very much for your kind words as well as the query. In the question, it is mentioned that there are 24 files to be combined , each with 10-50 rows. Even if we consider the minimum of 10 rows per file, the number of rows in the combined file would be 10x24 = 240. Therefore, setting the data type detection based on the first 200 rows would improve import times. Hope this clarifies your query.
