I fully agree. That interviewer was toxic to the situation by constantly rushing Rupert for an answer when he was clearly in the middle of dispensing profound wisdom. I also didn't like that the interviewer was clearly trying to push an agenda of echoing the oppressed and that somehow Rupert's vast wealth would be better served if it were to be dispersed among the poor.

Someone get Johann Rupert on a longer-form interview such as a podcast, I think it would be absolutely fascinating - he has so much wisdom to dispense to us all. It was painful and a bit sad to see him constantly interrupted and rushed by the interviewer (who was obviously being told in his ear by the network to hurry things along).

@machielvandertoorn8758

Tsepho. I definitely agree with you. From listening to Rupert's story in the first part of the interview, you realise that his parents didn't expect a country or government to determine their success, which still took 50 years to build, the difference is that they took it on themselves to adopt a GLOBAL mindset and not an AFRICAN mindset. They made a bigger fishnet. I am a white African born with the African sun on my back, I love my country but realise that my success with be in using the world as my platform, not this country. One thing I wished they gave more attention to in this interview is the topic of education. Economies like India and China invested heavily in this. Although there is still huge gaps between rich and poor, educated youth are able to offer better value in every job they do. I would love the government to invest in technology such as internet connection in rural areas, youth could learn from various online course which are often free. Youth could be connected to the world, realising trends, seeing market opportunities and produce products and services that can be marketed globally, in that way the next generation cannot blame past injustices, there would be less chance to use a very easy Scape goat such as racism. I think Rupert was authentic is his suggestions. It's a little frustrating that the end of the interview showed now appreciation of his thoughts and views (which are only his personal opinion from his side of the river). The interview was for him to be the center of attention and his time is much more valuable than the interviewer who was watching the clock. I think that government and politicians (and propaganda media) have set the stage for frustration and rage to put the majority in a state of being victims and expecting that they should be given resources and capital. The world is really not fair. The few that realise that you don't just get something for the sake of it, and that it take work and patience to make your own opportunity are the ones that ultimately succeed, much like Rupert's father did. The old saying is that the tallest tree catches the most wind is evedent in this interview. The interviewer basically forced Rupert to agree to a solutions for Rupert to provide various things for entrepreneurs to succeed, to which he wasn't comfortable to agreeing to because he knows, that people should succeed without his help as it would give them a sense of success and that it wasn't a hand out and also he knows he shouldn't get involved because if he did, the entrepreneurs would get victimised by fellow citizens for being controlled by white monopoly. People need to realise, you need to care for yourself because no-one else will. Why are we in a situation where we need to ask a Rupert for help, is it our generation that expects things to come our way from nothing? Be the master of your own ship. I found value in Rupert and realised that my success is not guaranteed or expected, I must work for it, just like he did. I responded to your comment because I can see you realise this too, regardless of race. I feel like you are a brother, not a close minded African brother but a global minded brother. If people get offended by what Rupert said is more like they offended because he didn't offer them all a Christmas present for nothing. And if people are offended, then they should realise that their success is influenced in no way by Rupert and move on swiftly and focus rather on building their own success.

@supplyfix7411
@supplyfix7411 5 лет назад
Mandla, well said. The way C Cleopatra is carrying on reinforces Mr.Rupert's point. We have to start talking to each other, instead of shouting at each other. According to his/her philosophy, all white people must leave the country. According to right wing whites, all blacks must leave the country. We both know that won't happen. So we can all behave like naughty kids throwing a tantrum if the mother doesn't want to buy sweets, or we can stop feeling sorry for ourselves and work together to make a decent living. It seems that many previously disadvantaged people have this sense that apartheid created a loan that they can now force us ordinary people to repay. They think it is like an empty coke bottle they can take to the shop for coins. It smacks of an entitlement that will never be satisfied. There will never be enough resources in this country to repay everything that people think they are owed. Therefore I thank you for being who you are. Intelligent and humble enough to learn from successful people like Mr. Rupert. The colour of his skin has nothing to do with anything. In the beginning, their business was also blocked by their government and their competitors. They also struggled to gain access to the markets, just like the audience was experiencing in their businesses. They forced their way into the market with clever and hard work. They did not belittle other successful people on public forums and accuse them of racism. The difference between winners and losers is how they deal with obstacles. Look at Mr Rupert, Patrice Motsepe and other successful people. And then look at the people in the audience and on this forum who were insulting them. Then you will know who to learn from. I wish you well in everything you do, my friend.

I think we need more of these talks. In doing so, we will eventualy find one another and be able to move forward from a common ground. At the moment, we don't understand one other. Dr Rupert honestly did not mean to hurt anyone's feelings. He is trying to help where he can. At the same time, he does not understand where the emotions comes from, he said its because people lost argument and decide to do the 'Trump style'. Which is not the case, eventualy or hopefully, he will have the emotional intelligence to better understand what triggers the emotion of Black people. The more we (Black & White, Young & Old) engage, the more we will understand one another. I do not agree with everything he said, but I understood why he said what he said. Dear Mr Rupert, Thank you for words of wisdom. As much as there are those that will view you in a negative light, please know that there are just as many (if not more), that appreciate what you do for the growth of business in South Africa. It was a little sad that all the people questioning you in the interview all had a negative outlook on every word you said. I can tell you now with absolute confidence, that they were definitely outnumbered by the quiet people there, who respected you and admired your valuable words of wisdom. I look forward to sharing and growing this beautiful country of ours, with all my fellow South Africans that want the best for ourselves and our children.

Very profound Interview; JR is sublime and wise period and I like his system of logic (great sense of humour). If one comes around with ill-informed pre-established subjective notion of him being perceived as a racist and arrogant; surely one is more likely to lose an opportunity to learn a great deal from this modest gentleman. South Africans (all races) we are our own worst enemies; and tribalism, self-hatred, and racism is eating away our beloved country bit by bit. My community (Jewish Community) is the best up to so far in building and uplifting one another and JR has attested to that; and lastly - the Chairman was so amazing and handled the interview brilliantly until the end. Much respect always to JR for extending an olive branch to local aspiring entrepreneurs.

I am not mad about Mr Rupert but one can learn from people who have operated across the globe. South Africa needs all the help it can get in a very competitive, fast changing world. The ANC government has not always used the money they have at their disposal very effectively and so I must smile when you assume that we will pull people out of poverty. We need entrepreneurs to lead by example and grow the tax base. Unfortunately, education is needed before we can pull people out of poverty and keep them in the game for a lengthy period. Throwing money at unqualified people is only a temporary solution.

I’m black just watched this full interview I think Johan is 💯 correct. I always say if your only defence is to cry racism after someone says something you don’t agree than you the one with a problem. Not everything that merely alludes to another race is racist and it’s ok to disagree with someone without looking at the colour of their skin. Very disappointed by the audience there was so much they could have challenged him on but they chose race... very unfortunate.

Because the old Ridge Dutch Fart needs to learn how to make riches in his homeland. I assume you're a white person. I am so glad to see some of the comments below here from fellow South Africans. I loved this interview, and think that Rupert hit the nail on the head many times. Unfortunately some in the crowd seem to have miss read the message Rupert was trying to get across. We as the new generation need to work together, not matter what differences we have! There should be no barriers. I am a young white entrepreneur who has a few young African partners in my small businesses, as well as other white partners. I don't care what gender, race, background or culture you come from. If you and I are on the same page and we believe we can do good business, that benefits society... then Im shaking your hand and taking a leap of faith to make it happen. If the trust is broken... so be it! I simply won't trust that person again, and I would have learnt a lesson. We need to get out of this old apartheid mentality, by using what happened in the passed as an 'excuse' is not going to help anybody move further. I came from a very poor whit family, where my single mother had to work two jobs to keep us in school. At the age of 6,7,8 I was cooking dinner for my younger brother, helping him with his homework, doing the chores around the house. Everything I have achieved in my life has been through hard work, blood, sweat & tears, and consistently learning to be better than I was yesterday. Fellow brothers & sister of all classes, lets not let our passed determine our future, lets create a new future that will determine our past to come. Thank you Given and Johan for this very cool interview.
