Additional information: the Popkopayeva II on floor has also been performed by Adeline Kenlin and Brooklyn Moors.

It’s worth noting that when she won the AA gold in 1996 Ukraine didn’t finish as a team on the podium, which makes her the first gymnast to win gold when her team didn’t even medal.

The Podkopayeva II should be a G. No if ands or buts about it. If a double lay is an F, then the double front 1/2 should be worth more. It’s so much more difficult and very rare.

Ugh I love her vault. So beautifully executed. She makes it look easy.

Certainly one of the VERY BEST we've ever had. May Ukraine rebuild itself and give us more of these super talented gymnasts. Got my fingers crossed - God bless!

She’s one of my favorite gymnasts, too. Almost everything she does is so balletic and graceful. Even when she lands, especially on beam, her feet land in a ballet position.

She was a practicing Ballerina in the off season..In those days many of the Eastern Block countries ladies studied ballet too...Such as Milosivec, etc..

All these years and I didn't know the double front on floor was named after her. It's too bad Strazheva hurt herself before optional floor at the 88 Olympics 😭

Neither did I tbh. I only noticed it in the 2022-24 Code, when they added the names of the gymnasts to the table of elements. It's actually quite helpful!

Stratzheva hurt herself in qualifying, correct? I remember not seeing her during optionals but never realized why until recently.

She really is one of the greatest ever. It is very VERY rare to see a gymnast with both POISE and POWER. I think if more gymnasts learned ballet today, they could emulate her. Gymnasts don't have to be ballerinas like they were in the past, but it's a true shame that even the basics seemed to be sidelined for difficulty. Poor execution is just a turn off in my book.

I had no idea the double front was named for her too, I coulda sworn it was performed in the 80's... interesting. Lilia was great at a lot of things, but in my mind her ultimate achievement in artistry was how she performed the 1996 Compulsory FX like it was choreographed just for her.

Instead of turned out feet and ankles extending the line we now get sickled and broken lines. There is a correct way to point your toes and most in the last decade or two that are praised for ‘beautiful lines’ are still sickled and incorrect. The correct technique could help so many who don’t have hyper extension to improve their lines but when the coaches don’t even know the correct technique the gymnasts don’t know either unless they have an excellent ballet teacher at a young age before they give that up entirely for gymnastics. I still see some Ukrainians use the correct technique and the only announcer that knows is a college commentator and former Olympic gymnast who name is escaping me at the moment but she’ll comment on it from time to time during NCAA meets.

Fun fact! It's widely known that people think that Lilia called it quits by 1997. Which is incorrect. Lilia in fact did not retire officially until 1999. She was trying to come back again for 1999 Worlds, but her ankle, and her back couldn't hold up. Right before the 1999 Ukrainian Nationals which takes place in March usually, Lilia was forced to retire by her coach, and Ostapenko. It was unfortunate that her back and ankle couldn't hold up because she would have greatly benefitted from the 1997-2000 code of points. On another hand, It was probably for the best because her coach had lost political power within the Ukrainian Federation, and she would no longer be the "favorite".

Her move on floor(the Pd. 2) is still so iconic. I believe one of the Moors sisters performed it recently, and it was nice to see it return. One thing- everyone refers to Beth as a world champion, but let’s not forget she is also the first British woman to garner an OLYMPIC medal too.

I am so tired of American commentators calling Simone Biles the best gymnast ever. She is quite the powerhouse and does many more rotations, but she and many other gymnast today lack the eloquence, grace, and dance skills of Lilia and other European gymnasts of the past.
@saragrant9749
@saragrant9749 4 месяца назад
What they DO have is scoring based on execution rather than reputation. Lilia didn’t have entirely perfect form herself- bent knees, cowboyed position at times and things like that. In Atlanta during the AA she had a major form break on bars but received absolutely no deduction at all. Simone is as great as she is IN SPITE of receiving deductions for little form issues here and there. Big difference. Lilia was amazing, nothing can question that. Others have been better, including Svetlana Khorkina.

Unpopular opinion - Overrated for her form. ( Lots of leg separations ) Underated for her power. (Vault was her best event, not floor)
@SabrinaVoineaSStolenMedal
@SabrinaVoineaSStolenMedal Год назад
You didn't point out the bent knee's on her vault and slight feet separation. Feet came apart on the Chuso too. The cowboying on the double front. She did not have perfect form.
@Marketoromagnolo

she competed the doulbe front with half twist when it was only considered as normal double front as in the code of points was not considered the SUPER E , as for vault was not competed before in 94 by Korkina ?

I just watched both videos, I think the twist happens at different times. Khorkina twists then flips, lilia flips then twists.
@singsongeric
@singsongeric Год назад
@@SociallyDistantnow The Khorkina vault is a RO-half on-Piked Cuervo (eg. half twist then back flip) off, whereas The Podkopayeva is a RO-half on-Piked Barani (eg. front flip then half twist) off. The code used to differentiate based on when the twist happened, but I think now they just consider it the same thing.

@@singsongeric thank you! I really appreciate you breaking it down. It’s always so hard for me to tell exactly what’s happening during some skills. Everything happens so fast and I’m only a year into realizing that gymnastics meets happen more than once every 4 years, so I’m still learning.
