The Bishop Pair is considered to be a big advantage. It is more effective and more destructive than any other combination of minor pieces!
A bishop is worth three points, same as a knight, but, when you have the bishop pair, their potential value rises significantly. One bishop controls only one color complex and can be easily parried. The opposing player could, for example, simply put all of his pieces to the “wrong” color, and the bishop becomes barren, almost obsolete on the board where it all of a sudden has no more targets.
Two bishops, however, are a lot more potent and they simply cannot be nullified. Their power can hardly be dampened due to the fact that they complement each other, thus controlling both color complexes and controlling the entire board. The Bishop Pair greatly resembles a pair of rooks. The only difference between them is that rooks move vertically and horizontally, and bishops move diagonally. They are able to achieve complete control, though, and diagonals can be just as easy to navigate!
The Bishop Pair’s power is relative though. The main factor which determines its potency is whether the position is open or closed. Bishops need space, and if the center is blocked and full of pawns, their power diminishes. Conversely, with every exchange and every pawn removed from the center, the bishops become more significant and their value rises.
If you have the bishop pair in a game, cherish it. Use the bishops to fulfill both defensive and attacking roles and don’t be afraid to maneuver them. Same as with rooks, occupy key squares and diagonals and extend their scope as much as possible.
Playing against the bishop pair is relatively hard depending on the nature of the position. If your opponent has the bishop pair, your goal should be to keep the position as closed as possible for as long as possible to make the bishops less powerful. Closed positions will also amplify the strength of your knights since it will grant them strong squares and outposts to lash on to.
Bishops are wonderful pieces and having two of them is considered to be a major asset. So don’t give up your bishops lightly. Think about whether the exchange will favor you or not.

wow, how have i not heard of this channel before. I love agadmator for watching and enjoying beatifull games and backstory, but you talk about principles, technique and games with an equally chess-loving attitude. Agadmator for enjoying high-level chess, Hanging Pawns for enjoying learning higher level chess myself. Amazing combination, thank you for all your effort.

Tiviakov vs Kasparov. Remember watching this game live. Was some sort of anti Sicilian, Grand Prix or closed....played in Wijk aan Zee I think. This was when Garry was still king. Geller vs Keres I surprisingly hadn't seen or I have forgotten (which is more likely). Kamsky vs Kramnik I had seen.

Bishop pair as strong as two rooks is an exaggeration. 2 Rooks are worth 10pts and the Bishop pair 6 points for a reason.

10:41 you should explain why after Bd3, Black avoids fxe5. My guess is that then Rxe4 and potential exchange sacs to maintain BB v R and shoddy pawns - stuff like that can trip people up especially since most players aren't used to needing to judge that sort of sharper tactic, that would be a good position to test people for quiescence too

I have to agree with Bishops being worth more, But I think its situational, obv Bishops are worth more in pairs(my opinion). But also depending on the system of game your playing, certain openings favour light/dark squared bishops. So in that instance I think the bishop should temporarily be scored higher than a knight, depending on board state ofc.
@beri4138
@beri4138 3 года назад
Yes, it depends on the position. The bishop pair is strong in open positions but weak in closed ones.

Why do chess pieces have points when a game is neither drawn or won depending on the points of the pieces?
@HangingPawns
@HangingPawns 5 лет назад
I guess for the same reason we invented tracking time and clocks. So that humans would feel more comfortable:)
@achessplayer6288

It's strength measurement and it's completely relative.
@beri4138
@beri4138 3 года назад
Because these values genrally hold up. Trading a knight and a bishop for a rook and a pawn has proven over thousands of games to be an about equal exchange. While a queen for a rook and a knight has proven to be a bad exchange and a rook for a bishop performed even worse.
