Very helpful, kinda wished younger me looked at the UK to Aus power supply differences, it's lucky they're the same or the UK gamecube and wii u i have would've blown the bucket at least now with this i can finally obtain a replacement power supply to stop using my tumour converters, thanks matey.

I don't know any local UK sellers, but you could use my power supply with a simple pin adapter?

here's one i've been wondering about lately If a nes or snes uses a 7805 and so actually only runs on 5v DC, wouldn't it be more efficient to use a 5v power supply? Also since the regulator deals with the excess voltage as heat into the heat sync wouldn't it reduce strain on the regulator and make the console run cooler? grate vid btw, i haven't come across anyone else who has bothered to explain how to get off from using a step down. I have been trying to eliminate the need for mine for a while now. I was glad to see when you came up with a work around for the snes mini, the only thing left is the Neo Geo CD and that funky 3 pin connector.
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 7 лет назад
Thanks mate. That's a good question about the 7805. I didn't mention them as I didn't want to add another level of complexity when explaining the voltage requirements in consoles. Let me answer it now though... So a 7805 is a linear regulator, which means it always outputs 5v DC at all times, regardless of the input voltage. Yes they are old fashioned and inefficient but still work very well. The key to understanding them is they need a higher input voltage that what they output. So a 5V 7805 would require somewhere around 8-12v DC to stabilise the 5v output. Yes it's a power burning beast that gets hot, but that's just how they work. So could you replace one with a direct 5V power supply. Absolutely yes, but the power supply would need to hold a very clean and stable 5V rail to power the chips correctly. The Neo Geo CD power socket is a pain to find, a good workaround would be to wire in a common DC socket on the back case instead and power it directly.
@emmettturner9452

I’ve found a few devices that use the same connector as the Neo Geo CD but only one is suitable for salvaging: Search SDD018 on eBay but don’t just buy the first one you see. I’ve seen SDD018-n1000 and SDD018-1000 with the right connector but I’ve also seen some with the wrong connector. That’s an HP part number but I’ve also seen it from other brands. You can also search model numbers C4453-61221 (100-120v 50/60hz), C4504-61221 (100-120v), or C4504-61230 (100-240v 50/60hz) It’s from an external HP CD-Writer 8200 Series drive. 8220e and 8230e are two that definitely use it but sellers are more likely to call them “8200” since that’s what’s on the front. The pinout is incorrect though soy you’ll have to fix that or chop it to use with something else. The amps are a bit too low on 5v and it has 12 instead of 10v but, before wiring it to my arcade PSU, I did try switching them around temporarily and it did work (GND>GND, 5v>5v, 12v>10v).

Hi man. Love your videos, they're very informative and helpful. I have a Japanese PS3 (original model) coming my way and I just wanted to ask you a question. At first I was going to buy a heavy and expensive step down converter to run it, but I'm reading on message boards that the PS3 has a multi-voltage power supply and you can just use an Australian computer cable in the back of your Japanese PS3. Do you know if this is true?
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 7 лет назад
That's a really good question and something I didn't cover in this video. So firstly the PS3 has an internal power supply, so it's like the power supplies I demonstrate but it's built into the console. I just looked at my PAL PS3 and it requires 220-240V AC from the mains. So I think the Japanese ones will require 100V AC. This problem can only really be solved with a stepdown that produces around 100 - 120V AC like the one in my video. The sticker on the underside of your console will let you know what it requires.

Hi Darren. Thanks for the quick reply. I just did a bit more research and found a list of PS3 models along with their tech specs. According to the list, all PS3 models supports multi-voltage from 100V-240V 50/60Hz except a few certain models (including some makes of CECHC and CECHG). www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Power_Supply#PSU_Model_.40_SKU_compatiblity Another forum I found had links to a tear down of the original PS3 model from Japan which included a pic of the power supply inside the console which was listed as 100V-240V 50/60Hz (despite the outside of the console listing a region specific voltage). techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/article/NEWS/20061111/123436/?SS=imgview&FD=-1225330620 Users on the forum claim to have powered a Japanese PS3 (original model CECHA) through UK power mains using a only a regular computer cable. www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=128383&page=4 So far, I've yet to find a record of someone trying this method and blowing their PS3 up, so I have a feeling it's legit. It seems like Sony did not print the full information about the power supply on the outside of the unit for some reason or another.

So say a Dreamcast and ps1 which both have internal power supplies and just a cord going from console to wall... are the two cords (Japan and USA) identical or are the two power cords different and if they are different and I have a Japanese console in the USA which should I plug into my wall? The Japanese console and Japanese power cord into USA power outlet or Japanese console with the USA power cord into USA power outlet? Hope that made sense...
@emmettturner9452

Unlike North America, most 100v Japanese outlets are not polarized. Theirs would have included an AC cable with two small prongs instead of a small and a larger prong. Due to different electrical codes/standards, the North American cables are usually polarized and the console is designed to work with both.

What do you recommend for a Pal SNES which runs originally on 9v 1.3a AC? I assume DC is fine and polarity irrelevant as accepts AC input originally? Or do you think AC would be better as was originally intended to run? I've ran UK SNES on DC for years without issue but often wondered what ultimately would be best for longevity all else being equal?

I recommend the power supply that I make. It’s DC 9v centre negative with 2A current. This allows for Everdrive carts and mods. www.retrosales.com.au/products/accessory-power-supply-super-nintendo-snes-power-supply-adapter-pack-nes-002e?ToPasteboard

I've used an official Nintendo Japanese Super Famicom PSU in newly aquired Super Famicom console, in the UK, using a Japan to UK plug adaptor (I know, I'm an idiot - I just got so excited and skipped the basics...) The console light came on but one second later there was a pop from the PSU and the Super Famicom light went out. I quickly switched off and unplugged everything but there was a burn smell coming from the PSU/the plug adaptor. My question is - did I blow my Super Famicom, or did I just wreck the PSU? Great video, If only I had watched it sooner!
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 6 лет назад
You sent UK 230V AC into the Japanese 100V Power supply, so that's what blew. Your console will be fine, but you'll need a new power supply.

Excellent video. Only one question, what about polarity, as SEGA switched it for the MultiMega(CDX) I think..?
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 7 лет назад
Sega uses centre pin negative usually. Yes the CDX (MultiMega) shares the same DC power jack as the Genesis 2. The small yellow one which is 4.75mm x 1.75 and centre positive. The current draw of the CDX is higher as well, around 2A

Unlike SNK when they switched from 5v to 10/11v, Sega was smart enough to make sure the incompatible adapters didn’t fit each other’s devices. ;)

If Japanese Famicoms and clones require DC power, does the adapter have to be AC/DC? Or would a regular AC adapter work?

strictly speaking neo-geo and mega drive use C and U shaped 8pin DIN connectors respectively, they might fit but it puts a strain on the pins and the connector, in turn damaging them.
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 7 лет назад
Yes you are spot on, that's why I only use composite video cables when testing as they only have the lower few pins and fit both C and U type DIN sockets without damage. The full RGB cables have all 8 pins and yes this wont easily fit in either socket. Good spot and yes you're right.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 5 лет назад
People always say this, but Sega and SNK literally used identical DIN-5 cables from the same supplier. Every single rib and strain relief notch was identical. It’s only aftermarket composite cables with vestigial pins where that might cause a slight figment issue. You can rip those extra pins out if it bothers you. :) In short: The C (170°) and U (262°) shaped DINs are only relevant for composite cables if they have vestigial pins.

My current Australian adapters will work anywhere in the world. They accept US voltage absolutely fine, you’ll just need a simple pin adapter from a travel store to adapt our AU pins to US. So go ahead and buy from my Amazon store. I am working on US adapters, but they are some time away as the certification is completely different. www.amazon.com.au/s/ref=bl_dp_s_web_4851799051?ie=UTF8&node=4851799051&field-brandtextbin=Global+Garage&_encoding=UTF8&tag=globalgarage-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=9a1647062d800511ec73e5025ad41c10&camp=1789&creative=9325

Did you address why you can use a new 9V adapter on something which originally wanted a 10V supply? You said you would earlier in the video.
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 6 лет назад
Most retro consoles have LM7805 voltage regulators inside which output a steady 5V DC to the console. Nearly all consoles use 5V internally so that's the first thing to know. To drive these regulators most companies stick to 9-10v DC input voltage range for optimal voltage regulation without too much heat dissipation. You can actually supply up to 35V DC as input voltage if you want, but it'll just produce more heat. So in a nutshell, 9 or 10V DC input is perfectly fine and makes no difference.

Canada is 120V AC just like the US. The UK is 240V AC. So if your existing ones have 100-240v input printed on them then they'll work with a simple travel pin adapter. If they only have 240v input, then you'll need to replace them all with "US" equivalents.

So I'm guessing the Neo-Geo that requires a 5V PSU doesn't have a 7805 voltage regulator where as the later revisions did?
@GlobalGarageAus
@GlobalGarageAus 7 лет назад
Not quite, but you're on the right track.
@emmettturner9452
@emmettturner9452 5 лет назад
The 10 and 11v Neo Geo consoles used a LM2576 switching voltage regulator. It’s an odd duck, since everything else uses 7805. Regardless, you can treat it the same and feed it 9v-11v center-negative just fine. TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine, Famicom/Super Famicom (NOT NES/SNES!), Sega Model 1/CD, etc will all work. Sega Model 1/CD has plenty of amps and is probably the best-suited but I’ve used all of the above on 9v AES consoles just fine.
