In this video I show you how to take control over the x-axis and headers across all visuals. First, I demonstrate how you can expand down all visuals with one click, an option not available currently in Power BI by default. The bonus topic refers to customization of the slicer- define custom date periods options such as YTD, MTD, QTD, and slice data with the click of a button! I hope you find it useful.

Great explanation, Bas, as usual, thanks. But more often we expect the dates to be continues, not categorical. It seems, for year, month.year, q etc. using date format (begin of.. Or end of..), not text format, is preferable. What do you think?
@HowtoPowerBI
@HowtoPowerBI 2 года назад
I use categorical a lot as well - just depends on the use case I think

I used parameter and place in the dateinperiod function to create a custom time intellegence button which can show you previous N months to date, you guys can try it as well.

This is awesome, thanks for sharing. Is there any way to allow users to control the number for periods that are visible in the chart? This approach will help us to switch between Month/Quarter/Year, but I want my user to have the ability to choose the number of month/Quarter/Year they like to see in the chart.
@HowtoPowerBI
@HowtoPowerBI 2 года назад
Hi Sagar, thx a lot! not sure what mean - the number of periods from the last date you have in your data set?
@sagarhanchate3
@sagarhanchate3 2 года назад
@@HowtoPowerBI Ideally yes. but to make it more dynamic we can have a single select date filter using which the user selects a date and from that date, the previous period trend is built

Thanks for sharing. Basu, everything is working fine until I get into the sorting of the visual. Running into a sorting issue. It is not possible for me to sort by NameSort . Power BI is giving me an error there can't be more than one value in "name Sort'. Please choose a different column for sorting or update the Name sort.
@andreamangano338
@andreamangano338 2 года назад
Same issue...try editing the last two lines in each SELECTCOLUMNS from Level Sort = 2 to 5 using this: & " - " & between the FORMAT and YEAR functions. Then in the Data View, just sort the "Name" column by the "Name Sort" one. This should fix the problem, hopefully!
@OlivierTravers

Well done, but like often with Power BI, that's a lot of work to hack our way around things that should be built into the core user experience. How come Microsoft added the ability to change how drill down filters behave (in the Format ribbon) but left out moving up/down in a hierarchy?
@RichardOliver
@RichardOliver 2 года назад
Yes, I totally agree with you there. Thankfully, Bas comes to the rescue again!
@DrilonPollozhani
@DrilonPollozhani 2 года назад
Not only is it a bit of work, you are increasing the size of your datamodel very rapidly with each new selectable dimension. Imagine doing this while having 500k articles and a 5 year range date table... So yeah, this kind of behaviour must really become part of the core offering as soon as possible. All things considered, great video.

Use power query directly from excel?
@sharatbabu7228
@sharatbabu7228 2 года назад
@@remib5863 We have one scenario. It may be power bi or excel anything.but in excel online power query is not there. My scenario is today we will get one excel file for 11000 records. Then again next day we will get 11000 records, so we need to compare those with previous an dif any column status changed it will replace previous one.if not then it should be appended to previous 11000 records and keep on day by day.so it should perform checking and then appending.after that that file should be saved to a folder. So is there any possibility in power query? Thanks in advance

@@amalbenrebai1595 We are using something similar at work using paginated report to build the table we want to export as csv from a published dataset and we have created a button on the power bi report that triggers a Power Automate flow to export the csv file in a designated folder and kick off another couple of activities. The same can be achieved through API calls
