How to expand and collapse a nested gallery / sub-gallery. Following on from my video on creating nested galleries here is a demo of how you can set your sub-galleries to expand or collapse when you click on the parent gallery. Two methods are shown, one allowing you to expand a single sub-gallery at a time and one allowing you to expand/collapse whichever sub-galleries you choose.
The second option makes use of a collection and the functions Collect, Remove, CountRows and IF.

Excellent video! I'm actually adapting it to build a navigation menu. I just need to figure out how to expand/collapse the sub gallery when clicked, I mean, if collapse, then expand, and if expand, then collapse. I'm trying to make sure only one is expanded. Thanks for sharing this.

Excellent work Paul and thanks for the follow up, I can't wait to try this. Keep the video's coming this practical real demo approach is the best way of learning. I'll keep my eyes peeled for more videos. I'm still learning at the moment but hopefully I will be able to share a little knowledge down the line. Thanks AgainJamie

I tried the First Part working and looking good I am going to give it a go to Part 2 (Expand and Collapse) Here is a bit of twist for you Paul I like to get the selected to top of the page and when collapse go back to the original position so that all expanded ones can be viewed next to each other. Are you going to take the challenge Paul!!!! Thanks

Hi Paul, This is pretty great and I am implementing a similar structure for a project. One Question though: How do you check the status of the Toggle controls? I don't want to use an "On Select" trigger because while I am in another screen I might want to know what is in a TextInput control that is in the sub-gallery for example.

Hi Paul, I tried this last night on a 3000 row Excel table and it worked fine apart from only grouping the first 500 rows. Now I understand this is delegation and Excel has a limited. The excel subset was a test data set of a SQL server DB I plan to connect to early next week. Will I run into the same problem of a row limit when I connect to SQL Thanks again it worked a treat. Jamie

Good question - SQL Server supports delegation whereas Excel does not - so for a 'normal' gallery with a simple (delegable) data source you do not get the issue - the Gallery will pull the first 100 rows from SQL Server then when the user scrolls towards the end of the gallery, it will pull another 100 rows and so on (not sure if there is an upper limit). HOWEVER, because the GroupBy command is not Delegable (even in SQL Server) and because we need to use GroupBy for nested galleries, you will indeed hit this limit. HOWEVER (again), don't give up hope. Your question got me thinking and I have a work-around that I will post in a video later today. With a bit of trickery you can add some Forward and Back buttons and hook them up such that your Gallery will initially show 500 records, but clicking next will refresh the gallery to show the next 500 records (and so on) whereas Back will obviously take you back to the previous 'page' of 500 records. HOWEVER (again, again) if you have a search box on your gallery it will only search the currently displayed 500 records, but a work around there would be to create a Collection of your filtered records first and use that as the basis for your GroupBy... I guess that may warrant another video too :)

Ah so the problem was Excel related but if we were to use the GroupBy function on SQL we may still run into difficulties. I'll keep working through the videos Paul, I love the practical real life application approach. Jamie

Hi Paul, Thank you for the video, I have followed your instructions step by step and have been able to implement this functionality successfully. So thanks for your efforts. I do have one challenge and I have tried to work upon it for sometime but could not get the expected results. How do you delete a record from the nested gallery. I tried Remove command but it does not work. I get click on it to get the selected item and edit the record. It works. But, deleting the selected item does not work. Can you please some directions? It will be helpful

Paul, This is working fine for my project. Is it possible to add different types of fields in sub Gallery ? is there any way we can show some fields in one sub gallery and different fields in another sub gallery ?

Hi Paul, thank you for the videos. Very useful. I have a details gallery to show item details, just below I show similar items list in another gallery, so customers can view similar items, but when they click I want the onslect to navigate and show details of the similar item. Any tricks to do this without going into a loop of creating more galleries and screens but reuse the existing details gallery itself? Thanks /Anand

Paul, I found alot of value in your two videos that put all this together. I was wondering if you might be able to add to the video by show how we can tick or untick the toggles and have them update a Sharepoint List for example. I have struggle a bit with the ForAll, Patch, ect to get those items to update in Bulk. I can get them to update with the oncheck for each record but what if you want to make 3 or 4 changes to a record with different fields in a gallery and after all your changes submit a button for example to bulk update datasource. Any thoughts on that? That would bring these Galleries full circle in being useful to me from a workflow point of view. Thanks again.

Thanks for the idea Phil. Got me thinking and I had a play - please see this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QLZzeQEgv4g.html. I show how you can work with toggles, text controls and dropdowns in a gallery and patch all the changes *for a given record* to SharePoint in one go. I haven't looked at editing *multiple* records at once then Patching them *all* in one go. I think I'd try to get the users updating records one at a time to prevent the possibility of losing edits to multiple records... Patch in my testing seemed quite quick so I wouldn't think users would be too bothered by having to update/save record by record.

Can a search function be added to search items in the sub gallery?

Paul - thank you for the great video tutorials. I have added these features to my PowerApp. One issue I cannot resolve is directing the user to another screen based on their selection from the subgallery. So, for example, my gallery is a location - ABC. My subgallery is at least one, possibly more than one asset at that location, ABC.1, ABC.2, ABC.3. I would like the user be directed to a detailed display form for that particular Asset when they select it. My guess is that I need to modify the sub gallery items to a Filter Formula but I am not sure how to write that with the ThisItem.grpName. If you know of a resolution, would you please share? Thank you!

Hi Paul, thanks a lot for the lesson. I started to learn powerapps just a few weeks ago, and i´m actually working with powerapps components. Is it possible to create this same menu as a component? Thank you very much for your help, regards from Chile!

How did you added toggle subcontrol to each row on the subgallery ? I want to do same , when I add the control its added to gallery not to each row of gallery
@pauloflaherty6757
@pauloflaherty6757 5 лет назад
Select an item that is already in the gallery, then add the toggle. Note that there is currently a bug (last few weeks) where sometimes you can't interact with items in galleries properly - try Ctrl+F5 to refresh browser (Chrome usually works best) and see if you can select gallery items.

@@pauloflaherty6757 You should of make a video from scratch. that will give a clear understanding of how you added and what formula is required to make this kind of expand/collapse form

hi Paul, great video.. however, in future, can you make the screen bigger as it too small to see and your voice is too far away too, it very hard to heard what you are saying. Thanks

Thank you for producing this video. I am trying to do something a bit different and I am close bur not quite. What I want to do is to open and close different segments of the same record. Each record contains 35 fields rather than show all at once I would like to be able to break up the fields into sections like Business Info, Application Info, Support Info etc. Any ideas?
@ulisesrodriguez1297
@ulisesrodriguez1297 4 года назад
hi idk if you still need this but try Collect(ShowColumns('YourTable';"All The Fields of Business Info"). Split your records in collections and then use this collections to show your data

Hi really thanks, By any chance can you do a video for Import excel sheet table data in power apps then write in to SQL Table from powerapps. Or Import data in to powerapp from azure(excel file data) and write in to SQL Table. Yes we have a requirement to read all fields from Excel and write in to SQL Table. Please reply..

Nope, doesn't work. All I get is it expanding to full size of the record set, the mail gallery doesn't expand AND constant crashing. Typical Microsoft. Maybe it worked for you when you created this video but they likely something changed for the sake of changing something and broke something. Daily occurrence for Microsoft products. Can you tell I don't have a very high regard for them?

the formula that you copied didn't work form me, can you look at it please? I think the problem is in Selectedcre_17_name but I don't know why is it not working. (orderHeaderID column is cre17_name for me) If(CountRows(Filter(Selectedcre17_name, cre17_name = Selectedcre17_name)) = 0 ,Collect(Selectedcre17_name{cre17_name: Selectedcre17_name}) ,Remove(Selectedcre17_name, Filter(Selectedcre17_name, cre17_name = Selectedcre17_name)))
