May lord Shiva forgive me for all sins and bring me closer to my higher purpose 🙏 O Shambhu Shambhu Shambhu 🙏

On the auspicious day of Mahashivratri, let me share my humble attempt at english rendition of ‘ShivaKshamapanstrota’ (Forgive me Shiva prayer) composed by famed Adi Shankaracharya. The prayer of forgiveness spanning in 16 slokas (couplets) beautifully captures the mental agony of an average Shiva devotee and makes delightful reading. 1. In the beginning, the context of wordly action leads us to the dark existence in our mother’s womb making us suffer the fire of hunger, floating among our own excrement and urine. Who can express the woes and torments engulfing us there ? O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds! 2. In the childhood, there was the excess of pain, the body smeared with faeces and urine , me always longing for breastfeeding , organs not supporting enough, insects and worms often stinging and me always crying from pain and woes! Falling sick with various ailments and surviving on other’s support , I , being unaware of your divinity ,couldn’t come up to remembering you. O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds. 3. In the adulthood, I was stung by serpent-like five passions which damaged my conscientiousness and I immersed myself in the affairs of wealth, spouse and progency. Being devoid of your remembrance , I got swollen with pride and arrogance. O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds 4. Now in old age , with my organs weakening, intelligence dimming, the body being scorched by physical, mental and spiritual fire , I am still stricken with attachments and wishes and still going without your remembrances. O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds! 5. At every step of my life- path, I have accumulated deep repentances and am not deserving of any scriptural remedy or Brahmamarg (divine path) prescribed for the dual-endowed (spiritiually evolved persons) . I lack faith in religious discourses , preachings or ruminations. O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds! 6. I could never bring myself to offer Gangajal (holy water) to you after morning bath, nor fetch Bilwapatra (wood apple leaf) from the jungle or gather the garland of the blossomed lotus from the pond or flowers and fragrances for your worship. O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds! 7. I never washed your linga ( perpendicular form) with honey, ghee, curd and sweet milk, nor coated it with sandalhood, nor worshipped you with the flower of dhatura (moonflower) , scented incense , lamp, camphor, naivaidya (a formulation consisting of nine ingredients). O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds! 8. Holding you in my consciousness , I never offered any donations to the dual-endowed , nor made fire offerings with one lakh mantras , nor followed any ‘varta’ (a prescribed ritual) or ‘japa’ (recitations) or the chanting of the Rudra (Shiva) , or conducted any ritual on the banks of the holy Ganges as per the Shastras( scriptures). O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds! 9. Existing as I am in the cosmic lotus structure where all beings eventually merge into the ultimate sound and all veda (scriptural ) knowledge merges into the ultimate element , I am still not able to ruminate over you Shankara who is all-sustaining and all-knowing. O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds! 10. I could never go beyond body consciousness , be detached and devoid of impurities. I could never abandon the three-faced attributes, nor destroy the darkness of illusion nor fix my gaze at the tip of the nose to catch a glimpse of your splendor. I could never attain the pure state to reminisce about you Shankar (Shiva) who have all the dirt of the Kaliyuga (current dark age) washed away. O Shiva! O Great God! O Shambhu (Shiva) ! Forgive my misdeeds! 11. We pay our obeisance to Ganges-holding Shankar (Shiva) whose forehead is illuminated with the moon beams and neck and ears adorned with snakes and the fire emerging from his eyes. Let us dedicate all our inclinations to Shankar (Shiva) , the essence of the three worlds for the benefit of Moksha (freedom from the cycle of life and death) and what else could be the purpose of any actions? 12. What will come out of this wealth, horses, elephants and attaining any kingdom etc? What from children, spouse, friends, livestock, body and house? Treating it all transitory, O my mind, abandon them all from a distance and for experiencing self , chant the name of Parvati-lover (Shiva) under the guidance of the Guru. 13. I see the age getting eroded fast . The youth is slipping away daily. Past days never come back and time is devouring the whole universe. Wealth is agile like the waves of the sea and life is fleeting like thunder . I take refuge under you . Give me shelter and safeguard me. 14. Whatever misdeeds I have done with my hands, legs, voice , body, action, ears, eyes or mind , whether being known or unknown, please forgive them all O ocean of kindness and be victory to Great God Shambhu (Shiva)! Why does the translation say "tastes of women" even though the verses don't mention it. This mantra is for Men and women, do not write translation for 50% of the devotees. This is a sin.
