This is very interesting! , Spanish is my tongue language, and we have “the good listener’s rules” , which is basically a list of steps that you must follow to have a conversation, we learn this rules at school and home , one of the rules is “listen in silence to the one speaking”

The older you get, the more beautiful you are. You are not only elegant but intelligent in every sense of the word. One question please: is the word sentence pronounced by some Americans as /sense/ or senece/. I think i heard something like that. Your reply is highly appreciable

I feel we don’t usually use verbal cues/sound to acknowledge that we are listening in our native language (Chinese). I think we would consider others are listening to us if they can make effective response or have facial expressions to react to what we say. Sometime I doubt whether Americans are really listening to me or just pretend to listen to me when they make those verbal cues you mentioned in the video.

Thank you, Annemarie for your lesson, especially for the tips what to do when someone isn't listening to you during conversation. I'm rather good at active listening, so good that I have little opportunity to speak by myself! So when I have a chance to speak (very rare) I continue too long and eventually lose someone's attention. Here in Poland we use very similar verbal cues and sounds as English speakers do but we aren't so noisy, I think.
