I would kindly counter this a bit. Of course reading the Bible is essential. Of course praying to the Lord and focusing on Him is essential. Having a relationship with him is essential. I think the problem with many is they think there is some competition between Jesus and Mary. I am a former Protestant myself. I can only imagine how confused I would be if someone said “you pray too much to Jesus and not to God the Father”. Of course the trinity is different than Jesus and Mary, but the comparison is still true to some extent. The Protestant view of God and the Lord Jesus tends to be very myopic and in many ways isolating. “It’s about ME and Jesus”.. “MY relationship” with him. We call other Christians our brothers and sisters, but I don’t think we really understand the significance of that. Jesus brings us not only into a deeply personal relationship with him, but also connects us to each other and to the saints. We are all His body and united to one another. Mary is the mother of the Lord and consequently our mother as well; no different than God the Father being our true Father. As a mother, she has not only a historic role in salvation history, but also continues to have a role as the Blessed Mother in the lives of her children today. Yes, it is “Me and Jesus”, but if we are the spouse of the Lord, how would it look if as a spouse we told him “I love you, but I don’t want to have anything to do with your family”.. or “I love your father, but I refuse to acknowledge your mother”.. this would be hurtful. I think what was good with the reformation was essentially showcasing the importance of having a deeply personal, and in many ways mystical, relationship with the Lord. There are numerous Catholic saints who have had deep intimate encounters and relationships with the Lord; Theresa of Avila, Faustina Kowalska to name a few… the reformation took this heart-felt love, mixed it with boldness/assurance of salvation and ran with it; leaving the sacraments behind. Christianity lost its sacramental nature and became individualized and increasingly secular. Out went the priesthood, the Eucharist, the communion of the saints, and soon other essentials like baptism and confession became optional or even obsolete. I don’t have the time/space here to explain why I feel I found the authentic faith in the Catholic Church, but suffice it to say that with regard to the Blessed Mother in particular and the rosary my life has never been the same. I have discovered so much fruit from this practice. I feel Mary does pray for me. My life has been so blessed by welcoming another part of the body of Christ I never knew I needed. My love and understanding of the Lord has not diminished at all; it has only grown. I know not everyone’s path to the Lord is identical and I myself have family members who will never enter the Catholic Church. I know the Lord loves them and has a plan for their lives. All I can say is that there is definite fruit in the Catholic Church. Beneath the political mess there is truth.

Jesus was born through Mary. God could have just created him but he didn’t. He gave us the blessed Mother of God to intercede for us. Just as Jesus came to us, through our blessed mother Mary.
