Powerlifting Coaching: The Business Side - Part 1

One of the single biggest reasons for the success I’ve had as a Powerlifting coach is due to my expertise and understanding of the business side. There are plenty of fantastic powerlifting coaches who just frankly have no idea how to run a business. They love coaching, they love powerlifting, but they unfortunately miss the mark when it comes to being an entrepreneur and business owner. I think I am uniquely qualified to talk about this subject because of my formal education background, but even more so, because what I did worked. I am from Springfield, MO where there was no USAPL or USPA presence at the time when I moved there in 2016. I am not strong or impressive as an athlete myself. I didn’t coach anyone notable until recently and when I was getting started I did not have any friends who were notable within powerlifting. But I saw an opportunity, developed a very solid business plan, and if I had to do it over again, I'd do it exactly the same way. So in my latest RU-vid series I am going to be giving an all encompassing look into everything that goes into starting and growing a successful powerlifting business. I take a look at developing the business and service structure, pricing, marketing, business expansion, and accounting knowledge you need to start a powerlifting coaching service. As well as give a full breakdown of how I started and grew my business over the last 3.5 years. This will be a 2 part series, and in part 1 that has just been released I'll be covering the initial steps to becoming a powerlifting coach, setting goals and priorities for your professional career, developing the business and service structure, and how to set, progress, and manage pricing with clients. Some of the info I give will likely be pretty obvious, while some information will be things you've likely never thought of (in particular the marketing section coming in part 2). But more than likely most people have never thought of all of these factors in combination with developing a business plan and roadmap from just starting as a coach to making it a full time career.

I can't wrap my head around the idea of coaching 70 people at once with weekly communication model. Most people train Monday to Friday/Saturday so you will get training logs and videos on weekend from almost everyone at once. Even with 72hours time to respond you will be overworked every weekend and have almost nothing to do during weekday. From my experience it usually takes around 1 hour to respond to 1 person. How?
@PRsPerformance
@PRsPerformance 2 года назад
You would need to spread checkins out evenly with assigned days for each athlete throughout the week. For instance when I was coached at one point under a weekly model, my assigned check in day was Wednesday.

I am only part way through (will have to watch this in multiple sittings) but one thing I'd love to hear more about (maybe it fits in part 2?) is how to move from coaching friends for free to charging for coaching. I have been coaching a friend for free for about 3 years, but I don't have any experience working in a gym or anything. Should my next step be to find more friends to coach for free? Should I try to get a personal training certificate to get experience actually working in a gym? Going from successfully coaching one person to asking if someone wants to pay me seems like a big step.
@PRsPerformance

If you are wanting to grow into being a powerlifting coach, work on finding more people to coach for free. Make it clear through social media you are coaching by just posting simple stories on lift updates of the person you do coach so that people know you are offering that. It won't happen ASAP, like I said, I coached people for free for almost 3 years. But I'd work to getting to 4-5 free clients, and if at that point you are seeing good results with those people, transition to starting a coaching business. Let your current clients know you are doing that and making it part of your actual job, and let them know you will be starting to charge for your services. If you have done a good job and they value your coaching, they won't bat an eye at paying $50-$75.

I've coached multiple friends throughout the years when I was starting out and recently started actually charging for training. Unfortunately, things have been less than stable due to people losing their jobs and I've been oscillating between 2-5 paying clients. Do you think it's ever worth reverting to coaching people for free for a bit to build the roster back up? Really looking forward to part 2 given the quality of part 1. Great information and much appreciated, especially as someone who's trying to get their bearings.
@PRsPerformance

Yes, depending on the situation it could be worth it to start picking up some people for free. As I'll talk about in the next video, the perception that you coach a number of people, as well as their word of mouth and indirect advertising of you on social media, is worth more at first than the actual payment they give you.

One of my goals is really to get as many people as I can into lifting, starting with those within my circle of acquaintances. I train elderly/disabled people on the side, and a big passion I have is teaching people how to start lifting and make their bodies strong and healthy now so that when they hit 60, 70, etc., they don't go the route of losing their independence as easily. I want to do this by making videos that lower the (knowledge) barrier to entry. I only got to train in a box gym for about 4 or 5 months before it got shut down due to the pandemic. Do you have any advice on what sort of topics would be helpful for people? I was thinking along the lines of 1) super basic nutrition (eat protein, fruits and veggies), 2) recovery (make sure you're sleeping well) and 3) training, but I'm not really sure what would be helpful to people brand new to the gym that wouldn't be simultaneously overwhelming. In your experience, do you have any suggestions for what might be a good jumping off point for people who are brand new to fitness? Should I just give a basic rundown of machines and then progressions from machines to free-weights? I know powerlifting coaching has a cap on how much you can do, but I want to help as many people as I can when I have the time and energy to do so.

Hey Steve, between a contract signed to release liability, and having personal liability insurance as a strength coach - would you suggest getting LLC insurance as well? Or would that be overkill. Thank you for all the content!
@PRsPerformance
@PRsPerformance 2 года назад
That’s probably overkill. Just having an LLC and the protection simply from that is all the coverage you likely need.

How long do you coach your friends for free until you start an LLC and you start charging? I coach two friends and one of them has his total go up by 250lbs in less than a year

No real right or wrong answer to this, just you choice on whenever you decide this is something you’d like to formally do as a job vs a side hobby.
