The dolls are worth collecting, because after like a dozen, you get a dolphin form, which allows you to move fast in water, and jump out high from it (and make a dolhin sound during the jumps). Then after collecting nearly all (28 I think) you get a bird form, with which you can fly anywhere (not just levitate in the same height, but actually fly wherever you want).
@@khankhomrad8855 I really wouldn't say that in this comment chain. Iron Maiden--or more correctly Bruce Dickinson--sued 3D Realms for naming a game Iron Maiden, forcing them to change it to "Ion Maiden". So, not exactly winning over us boomer shooter fans with that behavior.
@@WoobooRidesAgain Yes I know. That's why I said "Ion Maiden" and not Iron Maiden. You know, the original tittle of the game and not the name of the band.
I finally feel validated 20+ years later having bought this game no one cared about on the Saturn back in the day and thinking it was awesome, and now Civvie 11 approves!
@jeanjacqueslundi3502 I bought raved and enjoyed the game before there was more than magazine reviews. I respect the channels opinion because of his experience, so it was nice to see he rated it when it was as explained a bit of an underground success.
Man, that opening all I could hear was "In a time of ancient gods, warlords, and kings. A land in turmoil cried out for a hero." while that awesome horn track plays.
Can we all just collectively be upset at the shitfire that was T2's promo giving away the twist? I was lucky enough to have watched 1 and 2 back to back on DVD as a kid without knowing shit about the series but in a better timeline, the promotional trailers only showed Arnold as villainous and T-1000 just acting like a hero cop and BAM you watch the movie and get a M-Night Suprise.
@@ZigealFaust In defense of the trailer ruining the twist that the Terminator is a good guy this time, the tagline "He's back... for good!" is awesome and got me hyped to see the movie again after hearing it.
22:05 You're not supposed to grenade jump it. I found out after searching a bunch online that you have to go to the spot where you grabbed the key then follow the raised, light floor without stepping off. It was insanely frustrating finding that out especially if you got into that room with low health with no way to grenade jump out.
Always appreciate the dated references ("liquid hot magma", Langoliers, etc.). Especially when this game gives you mission briefings from Egyptian Zordon..... God, I feel old
@@floppyslot King's a bit too popular for that, even his old/obscure stuff. The short story was meh, but the movie was so transcendantly bad it became good.
@@J.DeLaPoer I think about that movie almost every day. I think the fact that I go to school with bunch of 20 year olds has shifted my perspective. It's nice to be among like company on Civvie's boomer shooter channel.
@@J.DeLaPoer when I was much, much younger (little-kid-still-able-to-form-memories younger), my mom and dad were watching some movies a friend had recorded from HBO/Showtime onto VHS when I wandered into the room and--maybe she didn't want me to see "violence" like a typical, concerned, Tipper Gore-influenced 90s mom--my mom said "you might not want to be down here, we're watching scary movies!" ...to which my dad had to caveat, "hun, its Langoliers, look how dumb this shit is." I will never forget how hard he laughed as she kept repeating "but it's STEPHEN KING!"
29:50 Civvie, its not that the Mummy Power up is at the first level, its that the mummys shoot two projectiles, a normal gray one that hurts and the red one that turns you into a mummy. If they hit you a second time with it before turning back to normal, they instakill you. Also you missed an important detail of DOS Powerslave: the Hand power up breaks the game. It not just doubles your attack speed, it also doubles your damage output, and the Machinegun basically instakills all bosses with it.
With how many indie games and hidden classic fps titles there were he can likely keep going for a good few years. Even if he runs out of old shooters to play he can always do other types of games. Like when he played Scratches or Alice.
FINALLY! This is why I love ya man, no matter how ancient of a game it is you’ll still do a dope video on it eventually and some random fan of that game out there will be overjoyed 🤟
This game takes me back - weirdly reminded me a little of a game called Shadowcaster that...I may be one of five people that actually played it. Classic DOS shooter years ahead of it's time. Good job Civvie!
What do you mean by "years ahead of its time"? I don't remember the DOS version being groundbreaking, that was the opposite actually. It released nearly a year after Duke 3D and just on a technical standpoint, it's a clear downgrade. It also came out almost 6 months after Quake. If anything, it was a game behind its time.
Loved Shadowcaster as a kid. Being prominently published by Origin, and not long after Ultima Underworld's success, probably did it no favours by inclining it to CRPG fans and missing the FPS market... and that doofus protagonist (Kurt? Kirk?) didn't help. But the morphing gimmick was memorable, though I remember being disappointed that the impressive rock-monster final form was only playable for a short final level... also being frustated by floating very, very slowly as the otherwise nifty eyeball monster!
Funnily enough, PowerSlave's protagonist's name is "Jon" but since Sargeant Sand is so good of a name, I decided to merge the names, so his name is now Sargeant Jonathan Sand.
Imagine my excitement when I was a kid in the 90's who loved Iron Maiden and video games when I got to play the demo of Powerslave or ξχhumεδ as we know it in Europe. A first person shooter that also was Metroid... Gotta give tons of credit to Lobotomy Software for making not one but two absolute gems of a game in a time where console first person shooters were only just appearing.
80s kid here with a similar love of Iron Maiden and games. I have never heard of this game. When i saw the title of the video, i wondered if it had anything to do with Iron Maiden...
Man, I remember reading about Exhumed in some PSX booklet alongside stuff like Disruptor (another console gem). my older brother had a chipped PSX and I got to play some games I was way too young for, good old times.
if you've watched ssethtzeentach: you know that stealing from a pharaohs tomb is stealing those items from them in the afterlife. i'd like to think Rameses is just pissed that the alien bastards took away his hieroglyph porn
15:15 I was racking my brain trying to remember where that iconic sound effect is from. I quickly went through my games folder and when I saw the name "MDK" that was when I knew it's from when you use the sniper mode. The bubbling sound effect is also from MDK, though you only hear it in later levels.
I remember passing this game as a kid because I assumed, from the name, it would be about a futuristic robot that revolted. I was legit blown away when I finally played it as a teen and it was rocking the Ancient Egypt aesthetic hard.
Not sure if you've read the other comments, but in case you haven't: that's a DOOM 1993 reference; a noun-swapped line from the ending screen of Episode 1. I would quote the line, but I don't remember it.
Edit 2: now I feel dumb cuz rereading your comment told me you knew; you were just being cheeky. Not deleting (seems the random dude missed it) but I feel stupid.
I just played this game the day it launched on the PS4, beat it 4 times in 3 days on all difficulties, got all the achievements (trophies since I'm on PS4) and absolutely had a blast playing it! Fantastic game, oh and the boss battle song is a goddamn BANGER!!!!!!!
I've gotten some serious Stargate vibes, though admittedly it's probably because I've been re-watching it and assume most anything that is "Egyptian plus modern weaponry = Stargate"
Kudos to Civvie for mentioning Iron Maiden. Honestly, I haven't seen anyone make fun of Iron Maiden not suing the devs over the name and theme of the game.
This man alone is what makes me happy on RU-vid I love old games and seeing this guy pop up saying new video warms my heart. The fact that even though he is in a government facility somewhere he finds the time between the torture and puke samples to make videos for us his fans and the fact he still has the will power to make funny jokes that are sometimes original is another thing I love. Hell I rewatch our pal civvies videos all the time they never get old for me. Here’s a somewhat old thing #FREE CIVVIE
I love when Civvie screens at Ramses "Then why are you a GHOST!?" about the immortality, bc so far as I understand Egyptian mythology, you can be Immortal, but also die, your just now also immortal and dead, it's a whole thing, like Osiris, who died that one time, but came back, but was still technically dead, so even though he was back, he couldn't rule anymore.
22:03 @civvie11 To deactivate the lasers in that room, you have to walk on the path from where you took the key to the laser room. Or.... You can grenade jump yourself to the exit in the last two levels before the final boss.
Omg… I had three games on my PS1 as a child… Crash bandicoot, Tekken and a random Egyptian game… I could of swore this game was a fever dream. Thank you so much CV for confirming that I am not yet 100% insane.
3:33 - For you kiddies that didn't grow up during the 90s Don LaFontaine was and always shall be the quintessential movie trailer voice - whenever you hear a parody of a movie trailer that starts with "In a WORLD...." they're parodying this guy. The Honest Trailers series on Screen Junkies directly tries to emulate his voice & cadence as an example. Sadly he passed away in 2008 and movie trailers have never been the same....
Incase anyone was wondering the music at the start of the Why? section at 36:38 is the boss music from Super Mario 2 on the NES. Was driving me god damn insane trying to remember why it sounded so familiar.
I had to: Into the Abyss I'll fall, the Eye of Horus Into the eyes of the night, watching me go Green is the cat's eye that glows In this Temple Enter the risen Osiris, risen again Tell me why I had to be a Powerslave I don't wanna die, I'm a god Why can't I live on? The eye of Ra weapon is in the OG Exhumed on the Saga Saturn, I remember it from back in the day it worked much the same as the pc version one, was a one hit kill to the lava beasts. Btw I had not seen the pc version till this video.
loved exhumed back in the day on saturn, loved the new remaster too. there's actually a really fuckin crazy sequence for one of the team dolls where you have to ascend a tunnel filled with lasers using only your grenade to propel you upwards, took a bit of time, but i remember it being worse on saturn with no sticks.
00:53 quick breakdown of the semantics of the term Metroidvania, if you're game has abilities that open new spaces (either opening doors or allowing you transverse space that you couldn't otherwise) then you're game is inspired by the Metroid part (since that has long been Metroid's bread and butter); if your game has a large suite of weapons and items and you can use drops and player knowledge (glitch or not) to get around then you're game is adapting the Castlevania part (since Castlevania only started doing this later in it's life, originally being known for a very tight linear arcade experience).
Tell me why I had to be a Powerslave I don't wanna die, I'm a god Why can't I live on? When the Life Giver dies All around is laid waste And in my last hour I'm a slave to the Power of Death
I'd say System Shock 1 on DOS in 1994 (preferably the CD version) did the Metroid thing in 3D first and PowerSlave was the Akumajou Dracula X2: NITM/SOTN equivalent. Poweslave on Build also had competition from Strife on the Doom engine that year as far as 2.5D or full 3D Metroidvanias go. Strife even did a similar thing to Nocturne in the Moonlight/Symphony of the Night where if you killed the wrong guy you'd miss out on the second half of the game and get a bad ending. Unlike Akumajou Dracula/Castlevania, you had to kill both characters from this choice anyway but one had to be dealt with later.
Strife is more of an open world game with mostly linear quests and a few optional items. It doesn't have upgrades/power-ups that unlock new areas, just keys of different types and gold to buy weapons, armor, healing, and ammo.
@@RipOffProductionsLLC I guess. System Shock is a better fit considering the Deus Ex style augmentations, less linear quest design and progressively better versions of both augs and hacking software. The pattern buffers (vita chambers) are basically Metroid's save rooms without being tied to the actual savegame system.
In this episode Civvie says "Metroid" more than in any other video of his, and I must say I'm quite happy with that. Doesn't give me much hope that he'll ever cover one of those titles though.
@@darthcinema4262 He tends not to review good games, as critics tend to do, because they would make boring content. Unfortunately in this case Metroid is a mostly consistently good track record of games with just one or two blemishes. If for whatever reason he makes any kind of Metroid episode I'd sub in a heartbeat.
He said that he preferred the 'vania parts of Metroidvania. He also said that Metroid games were "great" but not for him. And most revealingly, he felt the need to volunteer that he wouldn't rag on Super Metroid. I don't know how you interpret everything he said, but this is how I interpret it: He doesn't think the Metroid games are as great as their diehard fans do but is trying to be polite about it because of their legacy (and especially Super Metroid's legacy). I think Civvie is more of an arcade action sort of guy and so those are the types of games that he prefers and also excels at breaking down. He should stick to that. And he does review good games, but they're usually cult favorites that he also happens to like.
I've been playing this release a lot since finally remembering to buy it yesterday. So far: Goddamn _massive_ hitbox is irritating as hell, and goddamn "weapon power" system that only refills ammo for the weapon you're holding is also irritating as hell. I waste so much time trying to dodge projectiles that I *know* I should be avoiding by a huge margin, but then get hit by anyway, that it's actually harmful to the experience. I get that it's for reasons, but I'd much rather have had them mod to the hitbox to something reasonable and just fix the rest with invisible walls. Simple. It's like I have to unlearn decades of established fps muscle memory. Otherwise, great port! Massive nostalgia factor too as I haven't touched this game since original release on Saturn. Also, bonus points for excellent flamethrower. Why is it so rare and apparently impossibly hard for games to have flamethrowers that don't suck balls?
Yeah you're not supposed to play games based on muscle memory from every other game. That's just something people have devolved to because modern popular games all play the same, in correspondence with the remains of a 'genre', which these days are only the most base forms to ensure widest appeal.
@@JohnnyNatrium While I agree with your statement in very broad terms, I have to disagree as far as some specific stuff like player hitbox size and weapon ammo/power that I referenced here. This is certainly not a modern (or popular, for that matter) game, and yet by the time this was released in the mid-late 1990s those particular elements had already been codified within some reasonable limits. I've been playing fps since they first became a thing (eg; Wolf3D) and even by the time of Doom in the early 90s those things had been basically established -- and for good reason. It's not about originality issues endemic to new games here, this is stuff that was set literally decades ago at the very beginning of the genre. If you're going to totally break them, IMO it kind of needs to be for good reason; say with a game like Descent where the player is actually a ship and the weapons use energy ammo. In an fps where the player is supposedly a normal man but has a hitbox that's the width of three men, it makes no sense logically, adds nothing to gameplay, and certainly isn't some novel feature that "plays different" in the way you mean. Neither does it make sense for conventional small arms to use "weapon power" as though they ran on magic or energy. It'd be like having an F1 racing game, except your car controls like a monster truck for no apparent reason. Give me a human player and it should control like a human unless there's some plausible reason/explanation otherwise. I think you'd be hard pressed to find many who would agree that elements like player hitbox should just be arbitrarily massive to the point that you can't avoid any attacks, like this. Even aside from muscle memory and standardization, it just doesn't make sense from a realism or gameplay perspective and leads to high levels of player annoyance. While I absolutely agree modern games, especially AAA, are mostly recycled unoriginal trash, _certain elements core to the genre_ are "standardized" for a reason, and that's not always a bad thing.
This video deserves extra credit for mentioning the fact that this game did the Metroid style action adventure formula before Symphony of the Night did. But I guess people love the stupid word metroidvania more than action adventure.
It seems like one of the most underappreciated games ever, you ever heard someone saying "Hey,have you played "Powerslave/Exhumed" yet?" of course not, all the normal people were playing Quake and DN3D.
It's a really nice roundabout how, at some point, I got to try the old SVKaiser port of Powerslave Console to PC (and later, his port of Doom 64) and now those two games are now official works from him working at Nightdive, along with Turok IIRC. Dope stuff, kickass video as always! Edit: Love the Aria of Sorrow callback lol and Soma's pimp coat.
Hahaha, Civvie managed to miss the best weapon in the "Console" version: Manacle of Power obs: There is NO reason for someone refuse to pick this game's Ultimate weapon
I dont even care that you didnt play the Saturn version. Im just happy my favorite console got more than a footnote of a mention on this video. Thank you Civvie!
"What's the name of the Egyptian God of Random Drops that's fucking me over right now?" I think his name is Shai, the Egyptian God of Fate. Looks like he doesn't like you, Civvie.
