I used to play bass at a church. At one point before a service while we were warming up and practicing a few songs i played a few seconds of Ancient Mariner just goofing around. At the end of the service as i was packing up my instrument somebody who i had never talked to walked up to me and asked 'was that Rime of the Ancient Mariner?" And i had been caught. Him and I became really good friends and even though he had since moved to another city we still keep up to this day!
I once warmed up with Number of the Beast on my guitar. The Pastor (who I knew liked some 80's music) gave me a dirty look. After the service I asked if Creeping Death would have been more suitable. He paused and said, "It's biblical, but nope".
Not when you have back in the village. That song just ruins what should have been a perfect album, and it is a perfect album when you just throw that song out. Same goes for seventh son when you take out that can i play with madness disaster song
Good to hear that you will return to Iron Maiden ❤ "Somewhere in time" is an album you HAVE to hear in it's entirity. "A matter of life and death" as well. Looking forward to this 😍
If memory serves. Dave Murray plays the slow lead in Powerslave. Then it kicks over to Adrian Smith for the up tempo solo. After a melodic break, it kicks back to Dave for his upbeat solo. Great song!
Yep you can tell their styles apart. Dave is very much a legato player, while Adrian plays more dynamically. His solos remind me of a vocal line sometimes.
I always thought Adrian played the entire first bit and then Dave played the entire last solo. And I’ve seen the song live a million times so I don’t know why I’d thought so. But now that you say it, I can hear it; that’s how it goes😅🤷🏻♂️
Modern Metal is just a drone, but Iron Maiden is still terrifying. Terrifying in a fun kind of way, but then, I'm a fan Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. "Tocatta", and "Atropos", from "The Three Fates" are seriously more complicated, but not for the faint of heart. The same kind of people that call Maiden "simplistic" call ELP "presumptuous."
Then down in falls comes the raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain! Followed by Bruce's maniacal cackling is still my favorite Maiden moment ... ever. 🤘🏻
Steve Harris is such a GOD playing bass, that not even 3 guitars, Synthesizers and powerful drum set like the ones Nicko uses never drawn him (Steve) out!!!
@@michaelkruska6097 I wasn't familiar with that one so I had a listen as per your suggestion. Great stuff, but I still prefer Waiting for an Alibi and Emerald.
Best thing about the song Powerslave is that everybody has multiple solos. The main guitar riff of Powerslave is my favorite in their entire discography.
And from above comes the raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin! This is the most epic single moment musically in their catalog. This is so good. The whole song is like a painting, where every instrument brings a nuance.
Chilling with Doug on a Maiden Monday is just what the doc ordered after a hard day at work!! BTW "The Prisoner" is available to watch free on Tubi... weird show, but I loved it
Yeeess. Please more Maiden. "Somewhere in Time" is a natural choise, but i would suggest too "Killers" or "A Matter of Life and Death" (yes i know, this second one its not an easy album, but i think It would be a excellent journey to another layer on Maiden's music). Thanks Doug
The shift at 29:28 and the solo that follows is one of the finest moments in the history of music. I've heard this song a zillion times and that part still gives me the chills
You should do Somewhere in Time. It's in the holy triade, along with Powerslave and Seventh Son. It's the middle one. It's unique, for many reasons. The guitar solos are perfect. Nicko is at his best, as is Steve. And Dickinson's interpretation and performance are stellar. It's very interesting and special from a lyrical point of view as well. Cheers!
Killers is unique. There are some surprises there, I think worthy of a reaction. Adrian and Martin's debut. It's nothing like what we just listened to.
Back in the Village is an absolute banger! In my eyes one of their best, the opening riff, the lyrics, the solos and that banging outro… bordering on thrash in parts
I will agree with most on here calling for the Somewhere In Time album next! I have been asking for The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner on this channel for years already. It is an epic song, and Somewhere In Time is a great album from start to finish!
One of the most impactful albums and tours of my young teenage years! 14 years old when this came out and the World Slavery Tour they did in support of it is legendary. Blew my mind as a kid!
Doug, i'm 55 and Iron Maiden has been my favorite band since 1982. I really enjoy your videos because I have no musical training and you help me learn about their music. Thanks for giving my favorite band so much love! you are the best!
The "Somewhere in Time" Album would be a good listen. Their current tour is actually a celebration of that album with new stuff sprinkled in. You need to catch one of their shows. I am catching them in Charlotte this November, will be my 6th show in the last 10 yrs and 11th over all.
Powerslave guitar solo is maybe the best in their entire catalog. So well done, varied and powerful. The final 10 seconds of the solo leading into the last verse, that part is just awesome. Thanks for another great Metal Monday!!
Anubis is the Egyptian deity of mummification and the afterlife, he is depicted as a man with a canine head hence the ethereal wolf howl at the beginng of Powerslave.
Thank you for your reactions, I think Somewhere in Time suits u best for next album reaction, not only it is very entertaining, kinda underrated and musically interesting but also it goes right after Powerslave chronologically :)
Piece of Mind, please and thank you, Sir. It was my initial introduction to Iron Maiden and one of the first albums I learned to play along with on the bass guitar at age 12!
I'd go with Somewhere in Time for another half- or full-album review. To hear it in context, knowing this album and 7th Son, you'll really appreciate SiT.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Waited for this as patiently as I could! Once again, your analysis is as great as ever. Powerslave was the very first cassette I bought with my own money when I was around 13. So many great memories. It was a joy to hear it again with you. Cheers!
You are so right about Steve's bass in Powerslave. I always thought that he shined more as a bass player in the songs he hasn't written himself. As if when he is not the composer himself he feels more free to unleash his creativity in his playing. Same goes for 2 minutes to midnight, he steals the show for me.
I’m a bass player, play in a Maiden tribute band, and I agree wholeheartedly. Steve’s lines in songs he didn’t write are on a different level completely. Revelations, 2 Min, Flight of Icarus, Back in the Village
The one and only time I heard Rime of the Ancient Mariner live was back in '08 when Maiden rolled through town, and that was a mind-blowing experience, but I also really love the album version.
I have heard a lot of these songs hundreds of times before, but I enjoy watching someone with perfect pitch react to them. It truly amazes me how you dissect the song structure and dynamics.
Three of my favourite IM tracks - in one sitting. Great to hear these again, if vicariously. Back In The Village one of the be(a)st, least known Maiden tracks. Brutal. Fantastic.
I’m liking all the Somewhere in Time love…..that was my introduction to Maiden….and my all time favorite album. This was great…..and too, hope for a Somewhere in Time listen.
Thanks Doug for all the Maiden mondays until now.... I remember seeing your reaction to Rime of the Ancient Mariner a few days after you put the video in your channel... amazing days...
I've listened to Rime of the Ancient Mariner at least 500 times and I just noticed that Steve's bass pans left and right throughout the middle section. That's awesome.
