Well... A) There is barely anything new about this, just a 9mm AK with further ergonomic upgrades. The stock looks burrowed from earlier designs (the AM-17), the selector was in-development with the AK-EVO line that recently got announced as the AK for special forces. This was a low-investment development. B) Sometimes, less compact is better. This kind of thing is likely to get used against organized crime and whatnot, that usually means short and quick operation where controlled fire is more important than overall weight and compactness. C) A lot of those SMGs were terribly snappy and/or expensive to make with no overlap with more mainstream rifles in terms of manual of operations, parts or manufacturing facilities. This is simply more convenient.

Oh man, it takes years to do what isreal has been doing with the galil for the last 20 years. What a design to copy, in fact this is basically just a galil micro (MAR) in a smaller caliber, which came out in 1994. Also how did they make this specifically because of that one soldier that died when there have been countless iterations of this 9mm AK going back generations with the Russian special forces?? This dude knows nothing about what he's talking about. Besides that its a great looking smg And I hope at some point they end up coming over here to the USA but this dude needs to get his facts straight before he opens his mouth
I have some questions: -Will The AM-17 be used by pilots like the old AKS-74U too?I think we are very close to the day AM-17 ready to join the army so 🤔 -Aluminum or plastic handguard?Because the handguard have front sight on it.I heard that the old AK-12 plastic handguard doesn’t hold zero very well so maybe they changed with the handguard design,or,made it out of metal
@harald mory Red dots aren't the only thing you mount on a handguard that need to hold zero. The AK12 handguard is also - reported - to be kind of weak, lots of cracked handguard pictures floating about on Russian social media. But that's kind of besides the point. "Full" sight radius doesn't have much to do with where you put the optics; just as an example, the Galil ARM always had "full" sight radius (rear sight on the rear end of the receiver, I take) and optics mounting wasn't a thing at all. What you're referring to is monolithic rail on the top of the receiver, something the AK-200 series also has (and is actually a better design). The AK-12 handguard is just a sub-optimal, but cheap, design. Nothing else to it.
AM17 is likely to get adopted too. But this kind of things take time in Russia and schedule/announcements is hardly ever followed. This doesn't overlap with the AM at all, it's a SMG, mostly for SWAT-like stuff (Rosguard, FSB and units of the like), might be useful against some mafia-level treat, but it doesn't do shit against any somewhat good armor. The AM is an intermediate cartridge carbine, kind of likely to get picked by some SF Units to deal with terrorist treats and whatnot. Also meant for pilots, as you mentioned, since it's freaking light and fairly compact.
@harald mory Yeah, no, the SF is for the SF, not everyone. Regular AK-12 keeps the same handguard and will continue to be the more frequent model to replace aging AK74M currently in stock. The design of the handguard is just faulty.
Due to our current administration and the current sanctions are placed on Russia mostly firearms and now munitions there will not be a firearm like that legally able to be imported into the US only way for it to be in the US is made by a company such as Kalashnikov USA or Pomellato state armory and even at that it’s still won’t be as good as the real thing.
