The voice on this recording is my father, LA poet, John Harris. He died yesterday, 90 years young. I never knew of this recording, just discovered it. The name of the poem he is reading is called "The Gospel According to John". Namaste.
Chris Harris-Smith Sorry for your loss i know how you feel believe me. I have to say this track is an absolute classic of the progressive house genre, featured in the sweet spot of arguably the best dj set of the genre James Holden Balance 005 cd1 a real masterpiece. In short your father's poetry (this poem anyway) is loved by countless music lovers. Peace, love, unity, respect!
@@jeans.plante512 hey, i know it's an old comment, but i'll try my luck. I really love balance 005, and this song along with petter - these days is permanently implanted in my head since i first heard them. What other dj sets do you consider to be legendary, trying to discover more music like this. cheers!
@@Eriku69 digweed - los angeles aged well. Sasha - ibiza. Tenaglia - athens. All groundbreaking! I love electroclash, check out miss kittin - berlin and felix da housecat - excursions and his album kittenz and thee glitz! Finally, my personnal favorite, not here on yr... fabric 52 by optimo
I agree, the best this mix has ever sounded is on the Holden 2 Disc Set. The unique bassline comes across even more powerfully. And he didn't just turn up the bass either. That whole set is fantastically balanced/produced.
Tbh I much prefer the Balance 019 as I find it to be even more creative and timeless sounding. It's a bit more challenging as it's not as club friendly as it has a more artistic approach to electronic but imo is way more rewarding after multiple listens.
There's a lot of good mixes in the Balance series, 005 is defs up there though 👍 I was waiting for the best of the Global Underground chaps to chuck in their mixes, i'll keep waiting.....
Incredible track. Timeless. I travel for my job and this song is always played on every landing...looking out the window of the plane, this song reverberating around my head. Spinetingling stuff.
This is right up there with Xpander.. An immortal classic...still get goosebumps listening to it since 2003 and everytime it plays like doing ecstasy for the first time...
You pick up this working girl, who's hooked on smack, who hustles and scores. "That's all I do," she says. She says, "ten bucks for head, fifteen for half and half." She says, "three hits a day at thirty-five per." You say, "that's seven tricks a day at least." "But," she says, "sometimes I get lucky." "Once this guy gives me a bill and a half just to eat me. Only time I ever came." You figure you can save her. You sell your color TV. That keeps her off the streets a whole day. You hock your typewriter for one jolt. Then your shotgun, your watch. A week later, you say, "listen, I'm a little short." But she says, "no scratch, no snatch." You say, "look, it is better to give." "But," she says, "beat off, creep." One night they spot you on the street in your skivvies, trying to sell your shoes. You tell them who you are, but they nail you. Then she happens by, and she says, "Christ, you look fucked." She says, "hang tough." But you don't say anything. You just think, what a bum rap for a nice, sensitive guy like me.
The first time i heard this song, my dad played in the car when we were driving somewhere. He played this on his disc and i asked him what song was this, saved the song in my mind and now i come here every year to listen to this masterpiece. Rest in peace PQM also. Thank you PQM for making this song.
it's unfortunate that the state of progressive house, has been deteriorating ever since, at least you gave us a timeless memory to feed off for eternity
Luke, seriously...this might be the best prog track ever. At least *my* favorite of the thousands I played "back in the day." It still kills me. That synth line creeping in around 4:30! I hope you're still enormously proud of this one :)
Luke Chable I just wanted to tell you thank you! I remember hearing the original and liking it for the odd quality, it seemed kind of undanceable had an effed up parable on Proton radio and then I heard your masterpiece in a Deep Dish set on Frisky radio. Simply amazing.
This song takes me back 5 years or so. I used to be on a strict "guitar only" diet, but when I heard this track in a set on the global underground label I was blown away. I thought "there IS intelligence in electronic music" then came James Holden, Nathan Fake, Sasha, Luke Chable etc etc, then I went to raves and outdoor parties, then came the after parties, the chaos and putting University "on hold" then I came to my senses and graduated, it was one hell of a ride xD
temeadler Look for anything by King Unique, the Global Underground series, especially from GU10 and upwards or the Renaissance Masters series for a start.
Me and my friend use to meet up in his garage everyday, lay on his couches with his other friends, play video games and watch cable tv and get super stoned listening to this.
If you'd like to hear the original recording that was sampled by PQM, google "Neighborhood Rhythms (Patter Traffic)". That has the whole version, with the introduction that was cut off.
I do love this track. It's not singing lyrics, just your normal speech for lyrics. Not only does this make them more understandable, but also adds a sense that you ARE being spoken to. And about what? Finding the meaning of this song is as glorious as listening to it. It's a trippy tune, no doubt. All on top of the fact that the music itself is amazing.
At my blog I explain the situation. The PQM track has a 1984 performance sampled from a record called "Neighborhood Rhythms". The performances ~30 years later have differences because artists sometime revise their work.

Holy shit Darren. I can't believe somebody finally figured out where the sample came from. That is some truly amazing investigative work right there. One of the great mysteries of dance music, solved! Many thanks :)
My favourite progressive house track. Lyrics are a short story, great moody baseline with layers of melodies that just come crashing over each other. Amazing.
The author (uncredited and without permission, by the way) is an L.A. poet named John Harris. The poem is called "The Gospel According to John." You can view the original version, read by the original author, on RU-vid.
JoshuaWinkleman Because the producer PQM who used the sample of John Harris never gave credit to him, even though this track was massive and very lucrative appearing in various mix compilations, and PQM register this sample as his that's why...
Jay Cabrales Copying is the basis of innovation. Sometimes the beliefs prevent us from being original, as the laws of intellectual property misunderstood, and that only favors large transnational corporations. Beware of those beliefs that kill the human creative spirit. Cheers!
Timing is perfect, its getting caned this year at anywhere i'm playing out, its a track that every music lover should hear at least once, just like roaches
i swear when i trip sometimes and listen to these songs its like i'm in a vortex and just hear the background very trippy but so nice i don't want it to end. But before i can stop i know ill end up like that guy but i learned to not misuse and to still have that experience.
The credit for these haunting, seedy, human words should go to John Harris, the poet who originally wrote them. Let's give the appropriate person the credit here.
racked a huge key of mind-bending speed/md/mxe mix as Andy Hart drops this at 6am at Lounge, Melbourne - 16 years on from its release and still shifting dancefloors in melbourne
Oh man! I have wanted to know where that sample came from since this track first came out. I can die a happy man now. Also: One of, if not the greatest Prog tracks of all time!
You figure you can save her. You sell your color TV, it keeps her off the streets a whole day. You hock your typewriter for one jolt... Then your shotgun, your watch... A week later you say 'listen, I'm a little short' But she says 'No scratch, no snatch.'
OMG this song, i'd totally forgot bout it. Luke you are this man this is the kind of tracks I expect artists but most of time they fall way short of especially these days... unless its sasha or guy j . the good ol days is right, Seattle loves this track!!!
I fucking love this song. First heard it back when Prog. House was the king of the dance floor circa 2004/05. Sounds just as great as it did back then.
If only this was given to the queen to read out for her speech each year since it came out... the world would be fucking banging by now i tell thee! \o/
For me, this is a standout track that builds as it descends and the best thing, is it's a journey that takes any moment longer than it should be. Even if you are a purist this is worthy many a visit. And Luke being an Aussie just caps it off for me. If you like this, check out his remix of Shiloh - Dream on, and also his remix of Gus Gus - David. It's all like a capsule of genre in an instant that came as it past. I'd celebrate more.
when I listen to it I feeling I can go tfru next 10 years.. like process view or something, u know it's take times for better things.. time driving. rip pqm
