Great video! Thanks! I was at Prum 13 months(Apr '77-Apr '78).I was in vehicle maintenance with the 612 TCF.We lived in the old dorm.Austere, but we had a lot of fun.
I'm glad you liked it, Brother!! I was there from 86 till we moved to Zweibrucken. We didn't realize how great of an assignment that was till after we left!! Thanks for watching!!
This was a great look at our old stomping grounds. The trees are growing well at least, and nature is reclaiming the area to a peaceful hilltop with the gently turning windmills in the distance. So different from the years of War when so much violence tore apart this area literally. So glad to see that era laid to rest. I miss our time there, but we have to remember our time there had a purpose and we fulfilled that purpose at that time. That purpose thankfully no longer exists. We all fought for peace and at least in this area we achieved it. Thank you to all who served there. Some of us enjoyed our time there more than others but I think everyone has to admit it was a tour they remember.
Darrell, Thanks for watching. I so glad you liked it. You are right, most of us didn't realize until after we left how good of an assignment Prüm was. Probably our best assignment of our careers!
I was at Sembach AB 86-89 with 66 CES used to support Pruem. Remember doing an early am turn and burn with heavy equipment up there. Pretty place. As someone said best years of our young lives. Tipping back an Asbach watching it. Thanks for the memories. Mike Egan
Hey Mike. I'm glad this video brought back some good memories. We all had no idea what to expect when we got those orders to Germany but, for the majority of us, it turned out to be our best assignment. We made lifelong friends and memories. I actually met my wife of 30+ years there. So I've been able to go back every 3-4 years to visit family. Thanks for watching, I'm so glad you liked it.😁👍🏼
Great video, much appreciated. I was with the 601st TCS from 87 to 89. I worked in the "Data Shop" maintaining the 407L. I made one trip to Zwei helping move equipment down there before I left for Tinker AFB. With so much tree growth it was sorta hard to make out where out Shop used to be at. Once I saw the ramp for the in garrison location of the "Tipsy 43" radar I was able to get my bearing. Our building was south of the ramp.
Thanks for the nice comments David. We probably crossed paths at Prüm more than once. I was in 601st AGE 86 - 90. I made the move to Zwei then COTd to Bitburg. Yes the tree growth is pretty bad so, when I saw the ramp for the Tipsy 43 I knew I had to Zoom in to it. Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching.
My ex-husband worked radar maintenance during that time...Kevin Fried. Maybe you knew each other. :) Not sure how he felt about it but I loved that assignment.
Joe Lucas Great memories at Prum. I was stationed there from 1970-1972 with Det 23 1945th Comm Group, USAF. I was a Electronics Tech at the Autovon Switching Center.
Joe, I'm so glad you liked this video. I hope it brought back only good memories. I really consider Prum AS as my best assignment, 601st TCS, even though I didn't know it at the time. 😂👍 Thanks for watching
Thank you Mike. I was Chief of Communications Operations, 601st Tactical Control Squadron, from Sep 1982 to Jan 1986. This drone footage brought back lots of memories. Before me was John Shank and after me was Linda Sabin. While I was there, I worked for Martin G. Hoemme, Jon Campbell, and Roy Brinkman, commanders. Ops Chiefs were Richard "Dick" Brittingham and Benjamin Granade. Logistics chiefs were Steven Warkaske and Charles "Chuck" Haynes, CMSgt Gerard Detore, was my second on the Advance Element. My main superintendent was Donald Ward, and then Larry Amore. Lester Caine ran my Comm Ops section and then Chuck Haggard. Al Shortt, and then Larry Bizek ran my radio ops shop and then Clarence Reed, who died in a motorcycle accident. Lots of names of the members of Comm Ops are still in my memory banks. Janice Massey, Tom Seher, Tom Armstrong, Scott Sevin, Kim Garner, Barry Holland, Rob Wilkins, Scott Stewart, Kenny Popham, Tyrone Butler, Jim Wilson, Rob Cerasulo, Rob Winchell, Ted Lapointe, Beth Fowler, Scott Boyd, and Jim O'Connor. Toughest and best of all my assignments.
Thomas, I'm really glad you liked this video! As soon as I bought my drone the very first location that came to mind to shoot was the Air Station. My wife is from the Bitburg area so we go back to Germany about every 3 to 4 years to visit family. I always make it a point to visit Prüm. As you said "it was our hardest" and, although we didn't realize it at the time, "our best assignment" of our careers. You had quite the corral of great people under your command, some of those names I recognize, some were before my time, I arrived at Prüm in Nov 86. Helped move the 601st to Zweibrucken. Then in 1990, I C.O.Td to Bitburg AB. Again, glad you enjoyed the video, I enjoyed being able to fly and video the Air Station. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I was in the 601st AGE shop from 80 to 84. I visit Prum at least every 2-3 years. It's rotting away, but the memories live on! Thank you for this birds eye view!
Hey Bruce, You left 2 years before me. I arrived in Nov of 86. I was also 601st AGE. I'm glad you liked it. I hope it brought back some good memories. I get back every 3-4 years as well. My wife is from Bitburg/ Bettingen. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.
Andy, Thank you for the nice comments. Prüm Air Station was a tiny little place on top of a mountain. Maybe 500 peole. No one ever heard of it unless you were stationed there. 😂😂 Turned out to be the best duty assignment in my total A.F. career. I'm glad you liked it. Thanks for watching.
I'm glad you liked it!😄👍🏼 We were there at the same time. I was in 601st A.G.E. I hope those were good memories 😄😄 I appreciate you taking time to watch. 😄👍🏼 I tried to find your channel but it didn't come up when I searched.
Hmmm yes, some of the best years in my Air Force career, spent here with the 601st Tactical Control Squadron. It was a great time spent there indeed. I have a lot of good memories from there. I lived in Pronsfeld, about a 30 minute ride away from the station.
Mark, I'm glad you liked the video. Yes, I agree, 1 of my best assignments. We didn't know it at the time tho, Right? I hope thos brought back good memories! I was there from Nov 86 thru the move to Zweibrucken. Then I C.O.T.d to Bitburg.
@@CopperStateAerialPhotography Yes, I was there from 1985 and helped move the 601TCS to Zweibrucken, afterwards. Then after being deployed out for the Gulf War, I had to take an Assignment to RAF Chicksands in the UK. I loved my assignment in Germany, really hated to leave. The best years in the Air Force, for me, being stationed there with the 601TCS.
Memories my father was stationed there 84 to 88. I remember playing baseball at the field by the tower. My mother ran the movie theater. I still dream about Prum time to time. I Loved that little town.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. We were both there at the same time. I got there in 86. Our paths probably crossed either at the NCO club or the snack bar or maybe even the movie theater. Great memories tho. Thanks for watching👍🏼👍🏼
So very sad to see the state of the place. Kinda like not having seen an old friend for many, many years and to realize how time has taken its toll. I was stationed there with the 601st TCS in MADC, the Data Shop, from Jan 76 till Oct 78. Still keep in touch with a couple or more people I was stationed with or local Germans that I became friends with, mostly the young ladies! The background music was perfect too: combo of jazzy riff with a sad lament. Just like the good times and sad times of probably my best and most memorable assignment in my short AF career.
I agree Paul, it's very sad to see someplace that, at the time we didn't realize it meant so much to us, to be slowly fading away and soon will be just be gone. We do have all the memories, good and bad. And the bonds of friendships that were forged at this tiny little Air Station, can never be broken. Those of us that served at Prüm are a family. Whether you were stationed there when it opened in1950 or you were the one who turned the lights off and put the lock on the gate 2004. We are family. I've never met you Paul But, If we ever meet it will be like meeting a long lost brother, all because of a little place on top of a mountain called... Prüm Air Station.
Great vid, always an eerie feeling seeing abandoned places that use to be so populated and busy, some really nice flying there, great views. Cheers for sharing :)
Thanks for watching Matt. Yes, it's especially eerie for me because I spent 4 years of my life there. Thank you for the compliments. I really appreciate them.
Very nice aerial views of the air station and interesting historical information. Certainly sad to see and must be even more so for those who worked there. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Dave, I'm very glad you like the video. It is quite sad to see the air station in such a state. I spent 4 years of my life there. Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.
I was here today and took a quick walk over the site. Sad to see that everything in the buildings is vandalised and broken. At one building I saw the logo painted "department of the airforce" on the wall, it was in good condition.
Thanks for watching, Stefan!! I really appreciate it! Yes. There is not much left anymore. It is indeed sad to see it in such disrepair. We spent a big chunk of our lives there and will always remember it as a great experience. 👍🏼
@@CopperStateAerialPhotography btw a nice video! Yes I understand that, far away from home. But the forests in the area are beautiful! Do you remember the hotel Mooshaus nearby? That's also abandoned.
Wow, there are some memories from that place. Was in the 601st TCS/Ops as a Weapons Tech from '84' to '86. I seem to remember that the TCS stood for Traveling Circus and Sideshow.
What a great video. It's so hard to see. I was there with my ex-husband from June 87 to December 88. He was with the 601st TCS radar maintenance and I worked at the club for most of our time there. It was the first place I lived outside of my small hometown and I loved it. Thanks for sharing this.
John, Glad you liked the video. I actually remember you. I was in the 601st AGE 86-90. Made t he move down to Zweibrücken. Then I COTd to Bitburg. You are right, some of the pictures I'm seeing now is exactly that! Ripping up black top and concrete. I don't know why yet, heard they were turning into a wind farm at one point. Take care. Thanks for watching and for commenting. Mike Kelley
@@CopperStateAerialPhotography You probably worked with Clayton Bulluck. He lives just up I-25 a bit from me in Cheyenne (I'm in Fort Collins, CO). It's a small world and it pleases me that our human connections have outlasted the circumstances and structures that made them possible.
I was assigned to the 612th TCF 2/83 to 2/86 and have been back numerous times since retiring in 1988 and witnessed the demise of what we used to know. My wife and I were standing at the locked main gate on one occasion when we were greeted by Herr Schroeder (the housing manager). Many good times were had and several life-long friends were made.
David, I was assigned to the 601st TCS/A.G.E. I, too, have been back several times. My wife is from the Bitburg area. My stepson moved back almost 10 years ago and all my wifes family is still there. So we get back Every 3-4 years. Every time we go I take the ride up the mountain to go see the site. This video is from our last trip in 2019. I'm glad you liked it. I hope it brought back only good memories. I could have sworn when I was there I could still hear the turbo whine from a duece and a half echo thru the woods....😂😂 We were a few of the fortunate ones lucky enough to be assigned to Prüm. Although. I don't think we realized it st the time 😂😂 Take care brother. Thanks for watching!😄👍🏼
Wesley, fellow Prümite! I'm glad you liked the video. I hope it brought back good memories. It's very sad to see the Air Station in this shape. I was there, 601st A.G.E from Nov 86 till we closed and moved to Zweibrucken. Then COTd to Bitburg. Thanks for watching my brother.
My Father was stationed there from 80-85. I worked my first paying job there doing "Winter Hire" and then "Summer Hire" odd jobs when I was 15. Sad to see it like this.
It was a great time in our lives. You got to do something that 90% of the kids in this world will never be able to do... Experience a new and different culture for a few years of your life. I'm glad you liked the video Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it.
Thanks commenting. I'm glad you liked it. Yes, there are actually 2 bunkers with in walking distance of the A.S. Unfortunately they have both been blown up and surrounded by fence for safety reasons. Just a pile of rocks now. Thank you for subscribing as well.
I was stationed here in June 1978 - Feb. 1981 with the 601st TCS. After I arrived here I only stayed for 2 weeks because my unit sent me to Erbeskofpt relay site for 6 month TDY. After the six months was over I returned to Pruem and even extended my assignment to avoid being sent to the 3rd Mob in Tinker OK. Pruem was my best assignment ever. I visited many countries through out central Europe even as far a way as Egypt. Whenever I have vacation time I would go on long tours outside Germany. Visited it twice after I left in 1984 then again in 1991.
I'm glad you liked the video. I think everyone feels the same way after the leave Preum. 😂😂 We didn't realize it at the time that that would be our best assignment ever!! 👍👍😂 Thanks for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it.
Hi, we are making a video of what the base looks like today and we are wondering two things if you don't mind. First, what is the small, long building at the 11:30 position at 3:36? Second, what is the source of the first still image that you used in the beginning of your video? We are searching and searching for something like this that we can use to show people where we are in our video. The idea of the aerial imagery is great also, we may drive back to get some similar footage...of course the weather isn't so nice this time of year:) If anyone of your subscribers was at Sembach, we have a video about that too. Also North Point. I'm glad we found your video! Great work!
Hello, Thanks so much for watching. I really appreciate it! The long building was the Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE) / Vehicle Maintenance building for both the 601st Tactical Control Squadron and the 612 Tactical Control Flight. The source of the first picture I really don't remember where I got it. I my have copied it from a no longer up web page Called Pruemas.org or something similar to that. Sorry I can't be more help with that. If you contact me via email I will check my computer files and see if I still have a copy of it. If I do I will email.it to you. Hope that helps
Wow, that brings memories flooding in. The old dorm is amazingly still standing, maybe better than any other building on the site except for the tower. Your drone must have an incredible gyro stabilizer, based on all the wind going through the trees. 601st DATA Dogs '84-87.
Sam, I'm glad you liked the video. They way I understand it is the dorm came quite a bit later than the rest of the buildings. I think most of them were built in the beginning, circa 1950ish. Not sure about the AGE/ Vehicle maintenance shop. But, I want to say the dorm was somewhere around 1970s. Total guess on my part. As far as the Drone goes, it has GPS stabilization. I.E. it connects to multiple satellites, between approx 8 or more. And knows exactly where it is and the onboard computer keeps it in one place. It will handle up to 40 mph winds and stay in one spot without me giving input on the sticks. And yes the wind was blowing pretty good with big gusts.😂😂😂 Thanks for watching. By the way, I'm pretty sure we've crossed paths while at Prüm. 601st AGE 86 - 90
Nice flying giving great views of what is left of the Prum Air Station. A nice forest nearby and interesting seeing all the wind turbines in the distance. Saw you on the Canadian Drone Hub and realised I hadn't been by you channel for some time. Hope you get a chance to view my latest aerial videos with my MP2. Have a good day.
Thanks for watching and commenting Dave, Its kind of a sad thing seeing the place that I spent 3 years of my life at just disappearing like that. Pretty soon there will be nothing left and it will become part of the forest again.
Dear all. From an old Dutch cold war air force colleage: I have my hunting field at the old station. Authorities have cleared the site and its full infra is visible again.
I was there from 86-90 I helped the move to Zweibrucken. In 90 I COTd to Bitburg. 6 years total in Germany. My wife is from Bettingen by Oberwise. Tschüss!
Thanks for watching, I'm so glad you liked it. I received your email and will answer you in a few days. My son and his family are visiting from Germany right now, and I am spending all my time with them . Thanks again for visiting.
