Welcome to the volcanic island of Madeira. I just completed a long held dream to hike one of the best hikes in the world.
The PR1 hike is the most famous and without doubt, the most spectacular hike on the island (although there are plenty of other ones that are incredible).
This 14.5km hike takes you from Pico Arieiro to Pico Ruivo and back again, across an extraordinary ridge traverse of ups and downs, ravines, tunnels and amazing moments. Trust me when I say that it is extraordinary. It is not a novice hike, it contains over 1000m of elevation gain, and you need to have a good head for heights. The final part will also test you as it is a steep ascent to the end of the route. Also, be prepared for changeable weather, wind, rain etc and bring plenty of snacks / water etc to last you the 4-6 hours the hike will take you.
You can park at the Pico Arieiro, you probably will need to park in a car park around 1km walk from the summit (no charge), be prepared to add an extra 2km onto the official route length. Toilets are available at either summit but will cost 50 cents.
Other things to note is this is a very popular hike, so be prepared for large numbers of people, who don't always follow good hiking etiquette on the stairs / tunnels etc. Also, it is good to have a head torch for the tunnel sections, there is one tunnel in particular that is long and full of standing water and is fairly low for tall people!
There are many tour companies who bring people up for sunrise, and it does look cool, but do remember that this is probably when it is busiest at the first peak.
