In our final video from behind the scenes of Ghostbusters: Afterlife's production, Adam visits the practical special effects department to watch the crew rig up and test the deployment of almost two hundred ghost traps for the film's epic finale. Special effects supervisor Elia Popov shows us how his team modified and synced up these traps to activate all at once in spectacular fashion!

even long ago the one thing cgi has always been good at is doing multiple of an object. It works really well for changes. If you want to change the light on all of them from red to blue just change a setting on the parent object and all of them change.

That was a nice touch, I agree. Visual effects - be they practical or digital - should tell their own story that supports and reinforces the main story, kind of like mini stories within the overarching narrative. The traps opening in sequence tells the mini-story that they use an incredibly large amount of energy to activate and open, so Egon had to program them to open in sequence in order to prevent an immediate overload of the power source while them closing simultaneously indicates whatever they're supposed to be containing could escape if one or more traps don't close in time.

Eh, who said Egon didn't modify the traps to look like that in story? He's made other drastic modifications to the rest of the equipment in the last 30 years, and it could be he daisy chained the traps like that for convenience or efficiency. Keep in mind the original traps from 1984 and 1989 were different from each other and were supposed to have been cobbled together from whatever surplus and handmade parts they could afford, so it could be he discovered a way to make them work better by putting the power cables on the other side.

The thing that brought me out of the movie for a moment was the fact the ghost trap array were Spirit Halloween traps. You can clearly see the tooling reinforcement on the inside of the trap door on one of the close ups, and that irked me a little. Only because the ghost traps are supposed to be hand build purpose use equipment that isn't something that can be bought off the shelf. Anyway, now cosplayers have more reason to buy Spirit Halloween traps since they're now, technically, screen used props.
@honeychroma
@honeychroma 2 года назад
it was a much easier and less costly method, especially since the array of traps wasn't particularly on screen for a long time. The attention to detail just wouldn't be necessary
@pwnd1138
@pwnd1138 2 года назад
@@honeychroma I understand they used the Spirit Halloween traps as a cost saving measure, which is a smart move. Using a mass market product, to save money, instead of building a large number of props from scratch is a valid technique. It's just for me, seeing the close up of the final trap closing, I could clearly see that the trap was a mass market product rather than a hand built prop, that took me out of the film for a moment because it looked out of place. I would have liked that they would have at least put a hero trap prop in for the close up instead of the Spirit Halloween trap. I'm not sure if it was an oversight or a conscious decision made by the production team. Just to be clear, I'm not against using mass market products as props, I just prefer they use an actual prop for close up shots to prevent breaking the illusion.

I'd love a prop from this movie. But again this shows people don't pay enough intention to good FX when it's done right. All people do is search for the bad and go in on that, never to mention any correction (Sonic movie) when it does happen then move. They just move on to the next thing to nitpick. However this looks awesome & with the lights out you can finish out the sequence from the movie in your head.

ONLY Adam can express the true child in all of us as he asks to see the sequence a second time. I am however left with one question. Why a square configuration rather than a round one. Round to me would have been a more optimal to catch ghosts. YES, Yes, yes the prop themselves are square. This is right. It is like an elaborate dance - that can only be done ONCE. I’ve been re watching Ghostbusters Afterlife ever since I bought the film on 4K Blu Ray after seeing it in theaters twice. Everything in the film is pure genius. I absolutely loved it. lol

Never saw the third movie made because it looked extremely dumb and felt like it would ruin them all for me. Watched the new one recently and it was awesome 👌 the cgi for egon was fuckin perfect

@@r1w3d Technically Ghostbusters 2016 was in its own universe. So it’s not even the third movie. I saw it when it was free on Starz. Put me to sleep twice. I absolutely loved Ghostbusters Afterlife. Lol

@@ViperChief117 The fact that the director sought out the same CGI company that did the young Rachel in blade runner 2049 which looked phenomenal to recreate older Egon was amazing and seeing it felt like it was really him. Them using as many practical effects as practically possible topped it off with a great story line.

They have it as well? It’s been in those shaky ghost decorations since before iPhones were a thing, but fun to hear it’s become a ringtone now too. :-D

"Did...whi.. di.. How did y'..?Gwigweh.." 😵‍💫🤯 Articulate as always, Adam.. 🙃 I love that you can actually physically see his brain processing the setup, while simultaneously trying to remember how human speech works :) (I have that too when overwhelmed - my brain skips through all 3000 possibilities of how it might work, and then you start a sentence with a simple 3 letter word, and somehow mess that up... "Hwuu" instead of "How".. Things like that 😁 And the second you hear yourself saying it, you recognize that it's wrong, and you try to remember how that word is supposed to sound.)

WE DIDN'T WANT ANY CGI! Sooo will the Slimer rip off ghost be a puppet that you double expose over the film to get the original look? OH FUCK NO FUCK THAT! Too much work. We are also going to cram in as many CGI marshmellow men as we can.

More Ghostbusters content please! It would be so cool to speak to Steve Johnson who designed and built Slimer from the original 1984 Ghostbusters as well! Or a joint Arjen Tuiten and Steve Johnson event to compare prop and monster making methods from the 80's and today! All with Adam Savage asking the important questions!
