Couldn't catch this live - living in the UK makes watching any kind of live-streaming a pain! I thoroughly enjoyed this, I'm currently in the vicious cycle of auditions trying to break through, and I love the thought process behind all this. I've watched this once through, I'll need to come back time and again to make notes and refresh my memory. Thanks, Nathan

Thank you so much for posting all this KNOWLEDGE. I am a HS Band Director that tries desperately to keep his chops up, and share my love of trombone, and its videos like this that keep me inspired. And there may not have been a lot of people "tuned in" during the live broadcast. . .a former student of mine sent me the link to watch your videos. You are making a positive impact, thanka for all you do! I hope to meet you in Redlands this summer at the ITF!

Thank you so vary much Mr. Oft! This is so mind blowing for me. As a tubist, I have focused so much on low range and have ignored my high range. This video has really opened my eyes. thank you again.

Amazing masterclass! I think it is unbelievably nice to touch great ideas of the great trombonist for example even from japan like me. I really appreciate you and your friends who made a series of videos.

Hey Toby Great stuff I completely agree with the inspiring Musicianship section. It's probably the hardest thing to get right the more you work and the older you get. A lot of my teachers were not great players and the ones that were great players were not great teachers sometimes it came together but not very often. I listen to all kinds of non Trombone players to get performance inspiration from. Your doing great work here on you tube! Cheers!

Muchas gracias Toby. Many thanks Toby, for me you are a inspiring person for practice and Keep fighting for my dreams. Do you practice the technique of centering? If so, can you tell us how you practiced it? It would be great if you could in any of the masterclass talk about your psychological preparation in the process of practice and also moments before going on stage. Thanks again, I would like at some point to have you in Spain so that my students know you, we can organize a masterclass from the warm coasts of the Mediterranean Sea and enjoy the music and a good holiday. Un saludo, GRACIAS.

So when I was in High school I learned to do vibrato on the trombone using the air, and now that I am in college and watching more and more professional recordings I see that most players use their slide. Do you have a view on which is better? I have noticed that when I began to use the slide as opposed to the air, my long tones are more consistent when warming up but that could just be because I am becoming a better player. Also, thanks so much for these master classes they are a god sent.

I would personally work on jaw vibrato, as opposed to air vibrato. If you're playing anything classical, slide vibrato is almost always not what you want to do

Also, one quick question - how do you combine playing with a tuner and playing in just temperament? Do you simply use the recording to listen back to this or do you adjust based on what you see on the tuner? For example, playing 13 cents under pitch for the 3rd in a major chord...

Do you think mouthpieces play a big deal when it comes to high range or does it mostly come down to the player Mr. Oft?
@TobyOft
@TobyOft 7 лет назад
KJKING326 I think mouthpieces can help a little, but mouthpieces and the player make a bigger difference for the color they want in the upper register.

Do you have any tips for dealing with performance/audition anxiety? Maybe this could be a topic in your next masterclass?

Hey Toby, speaking on the tools for furthering my playing, at what quality of recording device do you think is proficient? Is phone quality enough to tell of a golden tone? or is it necessary to have studio quality microphones? or is there a good middle for recording? any bit helps. Thank you!
