Love it! Wondering if you have had any successful skaters with nerve damage in their feet? (Numb) been working on my muscles. I’m so wanting to skate again at age 55. 😊🌸🛼
@@artwithjessb2576 you should do it. I haven’t roller skated in 30 years and I just got back into it. NO phone or computer. Just so much fun! Now for the summer I roller skate at the school across the way because there is some almost new pavement. Perfectly flat with no cracks. I take my big broom with me and just sweep the area just to make sure there is nothing to trip me up! I have the whole place to myself. I just take my ear buds, plug in and enjoy myself. No one to bug me, no adult children who haven’t flown the coop lol, no dogs and no hubby. It’s a beautiful peace. You can’t put a price on that. I am 50 btw. Just do it because it feels amazing! ❤️🛼🛼
My friends came up with an idea to wear roller skates for Pride. I’ve never skated in my life and they have. Feeling pretty down I came across your channel. In 2 days I was able to hold my own! THANK YOU - you are amazing !
@@silverstream3531 Don't wait!! DO IT!! You will fall. Do you care? Just get up and try again! Keep trying until you have it!! Whatever you see anyone do, you can do the same thing. You have all the tools. DO IT!!!
@Holly NoFront Our rink doesn't have free WiFi. It's rink use only. They do, however, have TV's with a central DVD player. They use it mostly for birthday parties so they can "broadcast" a DVD with pictures of the birthday kid (or adult) when they do private parties...or put on kids' movies when they have the little ones in for company parties and the like.
Could you perhaps make a video about skate care? How do you know whether the wheels are too tight/loose and how to fix them if they are? What are the best ways to make sure all your wheels are adjusted to the same interval? And how do you check if your trucks are balanced? I bought a pair of skates after not skating for almost a decade, and I'm a bit blitzed. Heck, going into detail of the parts of a skate would be great.
Wheels are pretty easy. If they don't move, they're too tight. Too loose? They'll "jiggle" on the axle (slide up and down on the axle) when the skate is sideways or they'll wobble left to right and back. The wheel is on properly when there is little to no wobble, but they still spin freely. ( go for a 15 second rule if you have speed washers. A gentle spin, they should roll for 15 seconds. A bit less - 8-10 seconds - without the washers. Honestly, it's impossible to adjust all 8 wheels to the exact same intervals. As long as they roll and aren't too loose, you're good. Not sure what you mean by your trucks being "balanced". Could you explain a little more? If you got new skates, EVERY decent pair of skates come with a basic skate tool and a checklist. Read that sheet! Some have a diagram of the basic parts, but many don't. You can google that. This one is my favorite: i.pinimg.com/originals/05/dc/28/05dc2813f21f2195c39e24bf506cf07f.jpg While it details a derby skate, honestly, the only difference in most skates are the boot style and if they're indoor or outdoor skates. By that, I mean, every skate has a plate, trucks, wheels, axles, toe stop (tough unless you specifically got a NTS plate, you'll have a fixed stop or an adjustable stop, this diagram shows an adjustable stop as they're more common in derby), etc. Hope this helps you a little.
I second this. I'm slowly figuring it out, but all of a sudden one or both of my skate will start pulling one direction really bad. Does the truck need to be loosened, or tightened, is it something else, etc. Would love someone to explain this better.
@@laurarusso9424 Tightening and loosening the trucks is simple. The bigger bolt on the bottom of your skate (use the diagram I link)...as with all mechanics, "righty tighty/leftly loosy" if it helps. NO ONE has their trucks adjusted exactly the same. There is no "right" or "wrong" tightness or...er..."looseness" (?? LOL)...it's all about how they feel to YOU. Personally, I love my back trucks SUPER tight while I prefer my fronts *slightly* loose (the fronts do have to be a little loose in order to turn properly)....my husband likes his front and backs so loose he puts on his skates, lifts his feet up off the ground, and you can hear them rattle! So, that is up to you. Honestly? Play with them! Tighten them down as much as possible. Skate a lap around the rink or up and down your sidewalk/driveway. Don't feel right? Loosen then 1/4 of a turn with that handy skate tool that came with them. Again, go skate a lap or up and down wherever you prefer outside. Keep repeating that process. Once you're confident on your skates, you can then start to loosen them up a little bit. If you feel wobbly, tighten them back up a little. Toe stops are also an individual preference. Again, there is no "right" or "wrong". Most of those in derby live by the "3 finger rule". Put your skate on a flat surface. Then, push the TOE down until the toe stop hits the surface. Take your opposite hand. Making that "shooting a gun" motion with THREE fingers instead of two. If the back wheels rest on your fingers, you're good. If you can fit 4 (or more) fingers under the wheels, you may want to set your toe stop a bit lower....if you can only fit 2 fingers (or barely even one), you may want to raise your toe stop a little. However, as stated, this is personal preference. Doesn't matter what skates I'm on (I have 7 pairs)...with adjustable stops, I always set mine as far up as possible...my youngest daughter has fixed stops (no adjusting), my middle daughter likes the 3-Finger Rule...and my husband and oldest daughter actually prefer jam plugs over toe stops. Loosen them as much as possible without them falling off. Put your skates on. Stand with one hand on a chair to help you balance if needed. Point your toe like you're going to use the toe stop. Does it feel like it's "catching" too soon? (Again, too soon TO YOU), then raise it a little, try again. If it feels like you're going to bend your foot backwards reaching for the stop, you may have it set too short - again, for YOUR liking. Once that stop is at a height you like, set it. Then, do the same with the other skate until it's where you're comfortable with it.
@@OhhState Usually, if it feels like it's pulling, that often means the trucks are too tight. The difficult part is figuring out which truck it is (it's usually not both of them). Use the tips detailed in my reply to Laura for adjusting your trucks. :)
Thanks for your videos! I also want to say I am impressed by Xavier's ability to skate backwards and still keep you centered in the frame while you're both moving!
I wish you and your soothing voice could upload everyday, doing literally anything. I'd honestly listen to you grocery shopping and folding laundry 🤷🏿♂️
OMFingGGGGGGGGGG Dirty Deb!!! I just had the BEST skate sesh I've ever had in my life!!! I started out with Step 1 in my office before I hit the trail. Then practiced Steps 2,3 and 4 the whole 40 mins of my sesh and Holy Hell what a flippin difference! I talked to myself the whole time too lol... down with the butt, up with the gut... chin up, shoulders straight, snack center in tight, knees bent... it was amazing and I'm super proud of myself, I didn't fall once! Wooo Hooo!!! One thing I did notice is that I was leaning forward a lot and had to correct myself. I think this might be because the skates I've been using were Reidell r3's (derby skates), which have no heel, and now I'm using Moxi Lolly's which have a heel so it's a whole different feel to em. Thank you soooooo much for being such a good instructor and breaking things down the way you do. Now I'm just waiting for you to roll out the transitioning from flatland to downhill video. I have 2 spots where they're downhill and at the bottom there's a 4-way stop, where most cars just lightly tap on their brakes instead of actually stopping and I've almost gotten ran over a few times. BTW, today I used your scissor method to slow myself down then turned backwards and went down the hill in a lunge position so I was already in position to stop at the bottom. Lol As always, you ROCK Dirty Deb!!!
It is crazy that I have been doing all of these before this video. Proud moment here hahaha!!! Can you do a video on 5 beginner/intermediate dance moves i.e. crazy legs, grapevine, etc?
i'm trying to teach myself at my local parks and parking lots and your videos are EVERYTHING!! thank you for being a lil digital coach to this baby skater. you're my herrrooooo!!!
These are my favorite types of videos. I’ve been skating for a number of years, and am a competent skater at the rink, but still lack the skills and confidence to comfortably skate at higher speeds outdoors, go down any sort of incline, or do transitions consistently. I find these videos extremely helpful because you offer smaller steps and a more gradual means of progression, such as exercises to improve balance, to build up to doing more advanced maneuvers. To me, it’s more confidence boosting, and safer, to do progressively more challenging movements than to just attempt something like transitions or jumping over and over and over until you finally get it right. I think there aren’t enough videos that show how to develop those more basic but fundamental skills and techniques, so thank you.
Nice entrance. I had to watch you do that a few times. You mentioned a plan for practice. I went to a car park to practice and took a sticky note with 4 things I was to practice that day with all your guide lines next to them. It was so awesome. Love you Deborah.
I’m in the UK 59 years young and back on skates for the 1st time in 40 years! I Love your videos . You inspire me no end. I practise most days and although frustrated that I can’t do what u used to , you have shown me that’s ok! I have rediscovered my edges !!! Down with the butt and up with the gut and I did backward crossovers for the first time in 4 decades ! Thankyou so so much !!! ! If I get the chance to come to California I’m coming to see you . You are Amazing !!!! ❤️
In Australia I’m 55 and back on the skates after 40 years! Gave up surfing because of cancer surgery 3 years ago. Finding Debs videos and skating again has bought me back from a very dark place! Thanks Deb, it’s been so much fun and I love your videos.
@@dingles41 That’s amazing Di.... my confidence isn’t great and combined to being off skates for a year due to COVID I feel I have regressed . Love all the videos and will def use them to get back on track ... let’s keep rolling it will keep us young 😃😃
@Ash 9460 Yeah, Indy Jamma Jones is a really good skater and she makes very helpful videos, but it will be amazing if we can see video like this here because we love Dirty Deb! :D
You are one of the most amazing things on RU-vid and one of the best teachers I’ve ever seen (and I used to teach elementary school)! My dream is to get lessons from you in person someday.❤️🙏
I can’t stop watching you! As a 40-year old guy who’s never skated before, 6 weeks of hard training and I’m rolling around the rink.. thanks for all the tips 🙂😃
I'm 47 and just started skating again 5 weeks ago. I had not put on a pair of skates since 1984! Dirty Deb's videos have really helped me with mechanics. I get a little better and a little stronger every time I skate. I'm having so much fun with it!
Charlotte Baker oh I see. at least you’ve skated before so I bet you’re picking it back up fast. It’s my first time ever putting on skates... so I busted my butt a few times lol
Do you know that every time that I come back to your channel, I find something else that explains why everyone loves you. Loved these drills and will definitely try them when I get my skates on at the rink. Thank you for sharing your time and your knowledge so a newbie like me can get out and have a go 💕🌻💕
I first learned scissors when someone told me they were called Lemons. Then I heard them referred to as Bubbles. And then Scissors. So, me being me, I combined them: Cut the Lemon Bubbles.
Skates came in the mail today. Spent the last couple hours watching how to skate videos since I'm 30 and haven't skated since I was a kid. I'm terrified but excited.
Thanks so much for naming the little grind I go through most times I hit the rink where it takes about an hour for me to get over initial jitters, or, as you call it, a certain "shakiness," and gain back the confidence to really get my roll on. I've only been skating for about six months now, so it still feels a little unnatural and scary initially each and every time I get back out there. But today my wife and I did this routine as a warm-up when we arrived at the rink, and it really did help to fast-track that annoying period of adjustment. Much appreciated!
Can’t find the video of yours where you use a PVC pipe for balance. Which video is it on? I just turned 69 and am getting back into skating. You’re very inspirational!
Bless you Dirty Deborah Harry! My Hubby is giving me a 50th Roller Skating Birthday Party in 4 days and I have followed these 5 steps and practiced my heart out for a month-My ONLY goal was to not wipe out at MY party. Lol! I’m so happy to say that I believe I am a better skater now than in the 1980’s!!!! #Xanaduforever Love you!!
you somehow really remind me of scorpia from shera! also, your such a good instructor! i used to skate a lot, i haven’t in a long time and i’m getting back into it and your videos are really fun and really help!! ♥️
where have you been all my life? I am 49 years old and bought my first pair of skates which arrived yesterday so I have been on them twice already taking your advice to practice for short bursts everyday!!! Thank you for these awesome videos!! i am so inspired
Thank you so much for this! I hung up my skates for over 1.5 yrs due to fear. My husband made me put them on Sunday and I'm so glad I did!! Before I went out, I did binge watch your channel. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! Heading to my garage now to practice these 5 tips! Keep the videos coming! xoxox
I'm going to practice 1-2 for a week. Then add on number 3... practice for another week... then add on 4... etc. 5 - may be next month lol. But I can say I hear your voice in my head with what I've been doing and it saved me yesterday!!! A friend convinced me to into the parking lot of my apartment building (outside my comfort zone) and it apparently slopes more than I realized. I followed the road with your voice in my head telling me to turn my head towards where I want to turn... then when it leveled out I heard drop down, legs out, drop again like using a porta potty, knees over big toe, and pop butt out. And I stopped!!!! Thank you so much for your detailed instructions!!!!!! It works!!!! Even if I move at a slugs pace for the moment. But I trust trying your instructions in this video will help my confidence and skills build quickly.
Thank you for all of your videos. They're helpful for beginners or for fine tuning techniques. Would you consider doing some videos of more advanced skating moves as well?
The tips in this video have helped me tremendously. One thing that I notice is that I have a favorite side, most likely due to only rink skating. I can crossover those counter-clockwise corners like a boss, but clockwise? It's as if I had never skated! 😂 So I took to heart what DD said, that we shouldn't have a strong side and a weak side, to strive for both sides to be equal (these may not be HER exact words, but you get the picture). I finally bought a pair of skates and am able to skate outside. I found a perfect "rink" up at my local park (the basketball court) and I have been using the practice moves from this video. I can do DWTB,UWTG as many times as I want and no one cares! Scissors all over the place! I can also skate clockwise because there's no rules! 😊 I was determined to have my crossovers be equal. Learning about edges is key. I thought about what edges I was using going counter and then just reversed that going clock wise and after many laps I finally broke through that hurdle and things worked! My legs did what they were supposed to! Thank you so much for your coaching. I keep your words of wisdom with me every skate.
Thanks so much for the videos! They are super helpful! Working on nr. 4 right now, but can't get my legs to cross yet, feels like I'll fall 😀 but I know I'll get there 😊
forindet I mainly skate outdoors so I recently bought butt pads on Amazon. They have saved my tailbone and make me feel safer I finally got my left thigh over yesterday! You got this!!!!!
@@valloriebarnes9800 wow didn't know that existed! . I have protection and realistically probably can't hurt myself that much, I'm just an extremely anxious person :D It's more about beating my mind!
Down with the butt Up with the gut...lol Love the scissors move ...I been practising that Deffo gonna do this 5 step plan on my next skate Thanks for sharing another amazing vid xx
Thank you for all you do! My hubby decided for Xmas he was going to buy me roller skates! Great! Ya! Shoot! Now what! I don't know how to skate! But his gift was better than a vacuum or dish towels LOL! Anyway thank you for putting out videos to help me learn skating. Especially since I can't come to you. I live far away! Hugs and Love! Sincerely, Laura
A girl all the way in texas is loving your videos! Lol. I've learned how to go clockwise by watching your lessons. I'm loving it and determined to get better! Thank you so much ❤❤
Thank you so much for these videos! I just bought myself skates for my birthday and I hardcore watched all of your videos before I went out and they helped SO MUCH. I chant the matra "head up! Shoulders square! Hands down! Hips low! Snack area tight!" You've seriously helped me to understand the mechanics of skating and I can recognize where I mess up because of it. You're awesome. Keep making videos. 💕💕💕
I've been having a lot of trouble with scissors and this video was finally the first one I've found that covered some problems someone could have and how to fix them! thank you so much for explaining everything so well! I'm excited to practice more all over again
You are a legend Dirty Deb! Each week during my learn to skate classes I whisper "down with the butt, up with the gut" over and over. And today I nailed those backwards scissors! Thank you!
These are great warmup recommendations. I usually neglect to warm up properly outside of class. Thanks for the reminder and some great skills to incorporate into my routine.. Great video!
I warm up but not to this degree...that explains why I'm not where I want to be yet. Starting today, it's ON! Thanks Deb! Can always count on you to get me to the next level.
I so wish you were local! I desperately need private lessons for two reasons-poor coordination, fear of getting hurt (even though I’m padded from head to toe), and embarrassment. No instructors or rink near me offers lessons. Your videos are very helpful and I get the techniques and tips mentally, but for whatever reason I can’t translate my “getting it” to “performing it.” I’m still going to keep watching because I love your teaching style, and maybe at some point my head and body will finally click together!
Laura Russo skating is a super social sport! Go with friends and learn with them, it helps to try to teach techniques even if you aren't perfect at it. You'll learn even more as you try to teach it to your friends. And talk to other skaters at the rink too. I think you'll be surprised how much they'll want to help you learn something or if you have questions! Just try to have fun with it 😊
I am coming to see you my sister! Thank you so much for giving me back my life. I'm so overwhelmed and emotional right now because you made it very simple that I could follow exactly what you're saying to me and practice. I let my body because of medical problems get up to 320 lb. And I'm so hurt over that. But with your help I know I'm going to have the body that I have always needed. To get myself back into nursing into the trenches where I belong. Thank you so much! I am in tears knowing that I'm going to do what I love so much! And not only myself but I put other sisters on to you and other people. I'm just so very proud of you and happy! You made it so very simple. And the people that you're using to help you to help us to understand even your cameraman thank you so much!👑🌳👑♾💜🌍🌩🌬🔥♾😁

So glad I found u and heard about ur tutorials because I am new to learning my childhood hobby now in my late 30’s and I’m so exited to start. Ur tutorials are sooo helpful and encouraging lol
I did this for 1.5 hours and yes I did a huge improvement! Now I can prepare for the more challenging practice videos! Do follow her videos I think you'll pick up faster with her methods.
These are great tips. I use to roller skate in my teen years and I’m way past those years now lol! However I’m taking it up again in my 50’s and I can’t wait. Your training is helping a lot and bringing up wonderful memories so thanks for your videos! Wish me luck!!
You know, you're supposed to push you right foot out and bring it back in when you turn, right. Every time I try I just end up doing a scissor. But hey, whatever gets me to turn! XD Love you Dirty Deb!
Get a small notebook to write your practice plan in and take it to the rink with you. Write notes about the exercises you did and how well you performed them, how you felt, etc. This helps you remember what to practice and looking back over your notes you will see progress when you feel like you aren't progressing.
New to skating absolutely loving your videos hitting age 40 on wheels 😂🙈 plus my 7 year old son learning as well we are having so much fun together and away from TV / gaming ❤️❤️❤️
I’m in my 30’s and only just realised I want to learn to skate. I went to the local store to figure out my size. It was SOOOOOOOO much harder than I remembered visiting the skate rink as a little kid. Thankfully, the salesman was willing to help support me and stop me falling over, but I was struggling (it was kind of embarrassing and made me question what the hell I was thinking). I was between sizes so came home to research on RU-vid. I found your videos and they were EXTREMELY helpful. Visited the store again today and shocked them by my progress - just from watching your videos and learning the basics. Now I have more confidence in getting the right size (because I was actually able to move around on them) and in my abilities. THANK YOU SO MUCH 🙏🏼😁 !!!!
Change your wheels for whatever surface you're skating on...and sure! Indoor wheels used outdoors doesn't work well...nor vice versa...but there are some wheels (82A - 92A) that you can sometimes use indoors and out. It all depends on exact surfaces. Just be sure to clean your wheels if you've got indoor/outdoor ones. When switching wheels, be sure to check all the cracks and crevices of your plates before going indoors - gravel and small rocks can get stuck in the trucks and be shaken loose. The last thing ANY rink skater wants is to hit a rock on their smooth, wood, floor!
The difference between outdoor skating and indoor skating is the wheels. If you have the big squishy outdoor wheels and want to skate indoors you need to simply change out the wheels to an indoor wheel. Also check out your rink rules. Some do not allow wheels that have been skated outdoors even if they are the right hardness for the rink.
@@kristalburns3490 If the wheels are clean, you can use outdoor wheels indoors. Going from indoor to out it doesn't matter as much. As for hardness, it's up to the skater...and the rink. My local rink, I still use a 78A wheel for my backs (The Moxi Gummy wheels) but an 85A on the fronts (Luminous light-up wheels). When skating outdoors, I use the same set-up, but sometimes I will switch to a 78A front wheel, too. My local trail around a park, I go for the 85A's. The "local" rink that's further away, I run a 92A wheel as that rink is better taken care of than my local one. The local - closer - one is almost always dusty so I slide if I wear my 92's there.
@@MystiqueRisingSun I grew up in really weird rinks. They would spaz if you t stopped on their precious coated floors ( not even a wood floor) and cleaned or not if they were wheels used outdoors they wouldnt let you skate etc etc.
Basically what im saying to break the concept down is if i can skate outside can i skate any where else like if i can skate in one place just fine can i skate any where else the same way?
Your vids are so educational! I've been an aggressive rollerblader for years, but never really learned how roller skate 'til I started watching your videos.
Love your videos, still learning even after skating 19 y ears! Would love to see a video of u just rolling to sum good music putting together everything u teach
Is it just my nerves, or is going out onto the rink alone really as awkward as it seems like it would be? I don't have anyone to skate with so I'm wondering if it's a good idea for me to go by myself
Yes! Go by yourself , you never know what new friend you might be missing out on! Also it is awkward at first. Everything is awkward the first time. You will do just fine and have a good time.
Just nerves/awkwardness. I skated alone at my rink's Friday morning session. (Only the second one so far, it's a "summer thing" at my rink.) It was a bit weird at first, but as she said in another video, skating IS a social thing. I wasn't on that floor for 5 minutes before a couple other adults came up to me and started talking to me. It does help that I'm a regular s I did, at least, know the staff, but even without that, skaters tend to know/see when you're there alone - especially the regulars - and will usually make that effort to talk to you..help if needed, etc. I actually found it a bit more relaxing than normal. That might have been because there weren't a ton of kids...could have been because there were more adults...or maybe it's just because I didn't have my own kids barking in my ear that they were hungry/thirsty...most likely it was the combo. LOL I knew there were others I could talk to if I wanted, but I also enjoyed the "solitude" of not HAVING to talk to anyone if I didn't want to. If you're the outgoing type, talk to other adults, if you're more of an introvert, or just shy, wait for them to come to you (it'll happen). Don't get me wrong, it usually is more fun to be with a group, but at the same time, don't be afraid to go alone! :) Both has their ups and down. Plus side of going alone...when you're ready to leave, you can leave. No "Aw, come on, just one more song!" or - half an hour into the session "Okay, can we go now?" You and you ALONE decide when to arrive and when to leave! LOL
@Holly NoFront It does help a little if they see you there "all the time"...but in my area, I'm fortunate we've got a good indoor crowd (people still look at my girls and I funny when we skate outdoors, though)..so it's pretty common here for someone to come up and ask how often you get out there, what skates, boots, plates, wheels, etc. others have...pretty much anything skate related. :) Here, we often say "Your rink family IS your family"...because it's true. There's a small-ish group of regulars (14-15 of us who are there pretty much EVERY session) and we even get together outside of the rink - BBQ's, day trips, house-warming parties, baby showers, birthdays, etc. Most of us are parents, so we all kind of keep an eye on each others' kids...some of the older ones babysit the younger ones (at the rink and in others' homes)...it's amazing here. I just wish there was a good outdoor skating community.
Such an incredibly common experience!!! It is awkward till it isn't. I went through all that when I started at skateparks years ago. Sometimes would wait in my car and contemplate going home! Had to fight that urge and push myself.
I was checking all day yesterday for the new upload 😅🌻 going to the rink today so am going to practice all of your tips! Also huge thanks to Xavier for filming all this, he does a really good job capturing you while you move ☺️ watching from New Zealand xx keep it up!
Guys it worked!!! I spent two hours at the rink with my husband. I did all of the exercises the whole time and boy it was a good workout! Hubby even learnt how to scissor. Thanks again Dirty Deb xx
Just started taking my family to go skating once a week. Now I'm more motivated to buy our own and get better practice :) super helpful ! I just starting to get the hang of backwards skating
I like you, Lady!!! I've not skated since I was a girl child and I have fond memories of having fun in the rink and on outdoors skating and I'm getting back in the grove because I need something fun to do for excersie! Thank you.
I am 22 years old, and never had Roller Skates, only has Inliners as kid and was a few times in a year on the Ice. I have my skates since last Friday and I think I came far this week, even if I am training outside and this week was not that good weather. But today I was able to do crossovers in the left site, on the right site I was able to put my left leg before my right foot and I was able to bring my right foot up, so I can do the crossover a bit on the right site, too. (On the Ice or on Inliners I never did Crossovers. So I hope this year I can do it on Ice, too) I have to practice more on the right site, but it's way better than the last time I went. Today I jumped the first time (only a few centimeters, but heyyyy). Backwarts is still very difficult, but it's rolling at least XD The stopping is my biggest problem... The T-Stopp is very difficult for me. When I open my hips I don't skate forward anymore... This I have to train more. But for my first week I'm happy with it :) And it is fun to skating :) I bought a bluetooth speaker, so I can skate with Music and at my "training rink" (It's a Street soccer place) there is nobody, so I have the full rink for myself :P
