Practice Session - Changing my push-away and take-away to get more behind the ball.

I typically get outside the ball during the push-away and take-away. While I get behind the ball before my downswing, I wanted to work on getting more behind the ball from the start to see if it helps my swing plane and getting farther inside the ball. Let's see how my practice session went.

Man, I can't keep my wrist from breaking the cupped position on the downswing. The gravity just forces my wrist to uncup

Wish I could be there to coach you in person. I bet we could solve it. Could be a few different things.

I’m having and been having the same exact issues for a while. I have to wear a brace because my wrist hurts and collapses so badly without it
@YoPhocFays
@YoPhocFays 3 дня назад
@jeremygreene994 I was thinking of getting a brace, too. I never thought I had a weak wrist, but I just can't seem to keep that ball from uncupping before the release point.
@baldbrothersbowling

@@jeremygreene994tough to diagnose without being with you, but how snug is your thumb? Not sure if you watched our video on getting right thumb fit, but if you have that AND properly hinge at the base of the thumb, and use that feeling to pull back with thumb vs. trying to curl the ball, it is easier to load the wrist some without strain. Perhaps you have already tried that, but in case not, could be worth a try. Give that video a look if you haven't already.

Your wrist looks more loaded at the top of the back swing from this adjustment
@baldbrothersbowling
@baldbrothersbowling 2 дня назад
It could be. Also could look that way because the backswing is a little higher, and a little more inside. Either way, I was pleased with the result.

Excellent video. I caught that Brad video, too. Now your calculating and demonstrating the difference it makes to keep your hand behind the ball until the release area. Cool! It looks that your effort is less with the new swing technique and less parts moving until your release. Effortless bowling is what is necessary IMHO and hopefully minimized motions during the swing. I hope you do well tonight and in your tournament... :)

Appreciate that. I may coach, but I am ever learning myself, and I want to show everyone that we all have stuff to work on. I am excited to see how this plays out. Appreciate you watching.

Great lesson. I’m eager to know how did you do in league with this new approach
@baldbrothersbowling
@baldbrothersbowling 2 дня назад
674 in league so OK. Game 1 I was using a new ball and the new pushaway was good, but had a couple flat shots when I threw it out a little wide. Pocket 7-10 and 1 bad shot split cost me. But changed balls, stuck with the release and had a couple 240s to end. Still needs some work, but I think it will be good.

You improve your swing. Because you lean forward so much you can't max out your revs. You need to fix your lean.

I like the idea of the tube to illustrate how the hand position should and should not be. 👍

I did steal that from Brad and Kyle's channel, so props to them for that idea.

Nice video explanation. I have found that I’m trying to simply keep my wrist rotated from the start by having my hand position pushing the pinky side up as far as comfortable. But it turns out what I think I’m doing and what I’m actually doing are not the same. I will try to push it over a bit with my supporting hand next practice. Also Brad and Kyle’s insight that if you are doing it right, you should feel it between you bicep and tricep, helps. I bought a sling device last year that forces you to do this, but found you need to do it without the device or it doesn’t translate on the lanes too well. I suppose you could wear it during league but get a ton of weird looks.

Just learned this on the Brad and Kyle channel. I said now ill break all kinds of things in my house walking about doing this 😂 seems im always in bowling mode. Great video. Thank you for sharing. Oh. I am about to a softball soze wiffle ball and glue a piece of foam to have my hand closer to the way i hold my bowling ball or a mini basketball

Have you felt when pushing the ball with the left hand to keep your hand under the ball that sometimes your right hand recoils back to being on the side?
@baldbrothersbowling
@baldbrothersbowling 3 дня назад
Not yet. When I have tried in the past to start behind the ball, I have felt it was going to go too far. But too little, and it would recoil. But using my off hand to start seems good so far. We will see how it goes the next few days.

Exactly my problem, going down the push away my hand gets to the outside of the ball, while I correct my hand at the top of my swing. I'm at the 320ish rpm right now. I'll try to implement some of the things you did next practice. Awesome analysis. Looking great. Thank you!

I think its pretty cool that you saw something of intrigue to incorporate into your game and showed your audience how you went about it. Kudos to you! I would say however, as someone that dealt with coming around the ball a lot growing up as i was taught the "suit case" release, it's more trouble than it is worth to worry about the pushaway than what your hand is doing at the point of release/unload. You are doing a very good job of saving the release, it's not a very uncommon thing for a player to be outside then inside. You do it very well. So with that said, i would like you to consider working MORE on the release being behind, than the pushaway. Yes, the pushaway can impact some players and how they release it, but remember, the first 15 feet is not what matters, it's what happens to your ball motion as a result of the 15 feet that matters. Good luck and bowl well!

Appreciate that. I have always said that I care more about the top of backswing down. I don't care how you get there. That said, the Brad and Kyle video was intriguing enough to try it. Given how effortless it felt, I was happy with what it did. We will see how it all plays out. It's and ever changing process and the things you speak of are part of the plan to continue to grow also. Appreciate the watch and especially the comment.

I can appreciate what you are saying. I fear as soon as I do that, I will be missing something that would clarify things for someone else. I have always been an over explainer, mainly due to fear of missing something. Knowing what to cut out is a tricky task for me. But I appreciate the comment.

Most of the issue with your swing is your torso position. You don't have a big enough slot. You should have a straight swing no matter where your hand is positioned.

Ive been really trying to work on keeping my hand position before release like yours at 5:14 (fingers well below ball eqauter) and no matter how hard I keep my wrist cupped when I watch my video over my fingers are at the top of the ball still. I cant figure out how to get into that position. I have been strength training for a long time so I cant imagine being weak is the issue but who knows.
@baldbrothersbowling
@baldbrothersbowling 10 часов назад
Could be timing. Do you let gravity take the ball down, and do you make sure your swing matches that speed? Sometimes people move their arm slower, almost resisting gravity, and that could cause it. Hard to say without seeing your swing.

@@baldbrothersbowling there is a link to one shot but maybe the angle will not help. I can load another. Timing can definitely be an issue because foul line drills and 1 step drills I can maintain some semblance of that position im looking for.

I had this exact same issue a couple of years ago, and I got some advice from a buddy that really helped: He told me to point my index finger at my target on the lane when I'm in my stance, and keep it there throughout my swing and release. It felt really awkward, at first, like I had too much torque on my wrist and forearm, but I discovered it did several things for me: First, it all but ensured my hand stayed behind the ball, because as long as I was pointing my finger at my target, my hand had no choice but to stay put. It made me more aware of where my hand was on the ball. Second, it got my wrist into a very powerful position, much like yours; cocked to the inside. When I'm at my release point, my index finger is pointed almost straight down at the boards, but also in line with my lane target. This helps me both get around the ball more assuredly when my thumb comes out, and it helps me keep my elbow in closer to my body so I don't chicken wing. Also, I think your ball motion is great! I'd love to have that rev rate.
@baldbrothersbowling

That's a great tip, thank you for sharing. I may have to implement that into my next practice to see how it feels. And thank you for the compliment.
