Great advice brother. I love your hold advice. I practice my hood where I will sit on the floor with my back upright and not supported. I and hold back my compound bow for a minute. There should be no shakiness in it. I learned that from another archery hunter. That way if the animal is moving around you are not and they are less likely to bust you.

That's a great practice drill!

Great practice. Holding a recurve or longbow at full draw is tough since there's no let-off.

@romangrayjr it is But definitely worth building the muscle to be able to when the situation calls

Great tips!.. I was just out practicing earlier and I always keep in mind of real life situations where the animals would move on ya right before the shot. Definitely helps the mental game of it. Makes you sharper when it comes down to crunch time.

Agree 100%. Can't count how many times I've had to hold for 5 or 10 seconds at full draw for an animal

This logic is why im getting out the target archery mindset. Focussing in a simple stable shot process that i can hold for a bit of time.

Nothing wrong with target archery. But I don't think much of it carries over to real world hunting situations with moving animals and fighting for shooting lanes, etc. I only practice for hunting personally. So never experienced the target stuff.

I call it an approach draw, anticipating where the animal is going to pass as it is approaching, but it's view of me is blocked before it arrives at that spot. When I practice shooting at straw bales, the bales obviously can't move into my shooting lane, so I practice every shot aiming to the side of the bale, then swinging to the bale to make the shot. Someone made a comment how painful it was to watch my shot sequence, but I don't practice to shoot at targets, I practice to shoot at moving animals. This is especially important when you are bowhunting FROM THE GROUND, AT CLOSE RANGE and cannot risk stopping the animal because you are not in a ground blind, or 15 feet up a tree, where you can make a sound to stop them. On a side note, Dr. Ed Ashby stated there is an advantage shooting at CLOSE RANGE, MOVING animals. It takes them more time to react to the sound of the bow when they are moving forward, and not stopped staring and listening intently for danger.

Great points. Whole different world from the ground without a blind

I think we can get hung up on tree stands and ground blinds and miss out on one aspect of hunting that has almost become a lost art. Bowhunting without stands or blinds will make you a better hunter. The best time to do ground hunting is before the foliage drops in early season. There is a catch. You usually either get a shot, or get busted eventually, and not much in between. ha @@SamkoTradBow
