Practise 2 Hands Together on Piano with Contrary Motion Scales

Playing piano or keyboard with two hands together is one of the biggest challenges learners face - playing with either left or right hand by itself is relatively easy, but once the hands have to work together things can get challenging, fast.
The single best type of exercise for improving your hand independence on piano or keyboard is contrary motion. You can practise contrary motion using scales or broken chords, and it's massively effective at getting both hands working at the same time because it's regular and controlled, but both hands are doing something different throughout the whole exercise.
In this video I demonstrate a C major contrary motion scale and an F major contrary motion broken chord. If you want to push you hand independence skills even further, try going faster, playing over more octaves, or playing the exercises with both hands in harder keys with more black notes.
By the way, if you're interested in other strategies that will help you get your hands working together better on the keyboard, I have a full tutorial on the subject here: • Playing Piano with 2 H...

@@taki_val Watch proper pianists play songs. Big names like: Bach, Beethoven or Chopin. Idk why. For some reason, when I watch pianists play these songs, it makes me emotional and motivates me to continue learning a song. I hope this helped, but if it didn't, Force yourself. 🤣

It's a tricky thing to do for all of us! The way to approach is to start super slowly, even to the point of breaking it down to individual movements, and to practise slower than you think you need to for longer than you think you need to. Does that help?

That's a really common problem - you're basically asking your brain to coordinate a really unnatural task. If you're thinking of starting again, you'll experience it again: the trick is just to know it's normal, and to patiently push through. It's not easy, but it's definitely doable!

@BillHilton
@BillHilton Год назад
Really boring answer: keep practising! It's the single biggest problem that people face when they start playing two hands together, and it's one of those frustrating ones where you can understand what you need to do very quickly, but it takes a long time for your brain/nervous system/muscles to hack together all the right neurocircuitry so that your hands and fingers can catch up and do what your conscious brain thinks should be obvious and easy. The trick is to keep working at it, and keep challenging yourself with stuff you can barely do at slow speeds. It'll feel crushingly difficult and frustrating, but that's what drives internal change. Stick at it, and you'll get there! if you're looking for specific stuff to practise, my Train Your Piano Brain series here on RU-vid might help, especially tutorial 2: ru-vid.com/group/PLpOuhygfD7QnKq5P3mf7TiofvItxhuM2i

Doing contrary motion, will make you good at, well contrary motion. It will do little if anything for general "hand independence". I'm sick of hearing about these supposed tricks by people with decades under their belt l, simply regurgitating what their piano teacher said 30 fucking years ago. Other than that, this is guy is pretty solid. If you want to play two hands together, then okay two hands together. Start with a simple 4 or 6 note pattern with your left hand, while playing a scale in your right hand. Could do swinging 8 notes, triplets, 16 th notes etc. Try doing the reverse after mastering that. Keep counting precisely until it's automatic. If you want to do hanon and other silly things such as contrary motions scales, now you have. A choice.
@BillHilton
