In this video, I go over all the modifications I made to our previous 2014 Toyota Prado 150 GXL to make it the ultimate off road tourer.
I explain our rationale behind what modifications we have chosen and why they best suited our needs for overland travel.

Great rundown. Keeping the inside clean is the go. I have a 2018 Prado with the same Bullbar, roof rack, ARB drawer system, plus a rooftop tent and twin wheel carrier (heaving the 2nd spare onto the roof rack is too hard, and anyway there;s no room when carrying the tent). I got a GVM upgrade at the start. It makes a big difference and worth it. I haven't come anywhere near the 3,500Kg GVM yet, but I expect to next year when we travel down the Canning.

Good fit for purpose build. Keeps the weight down. The Teflon runners are also much more durable and tolerant of washboard than normal balled runners. Heavy duty ones are double the weight and 5X the price. Good choice.

@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 года назад
Hey mate, so the short answer is no. Personally I'm not a big fan in updating the factory head units in these vehicle and that's just simply from bad previous experience. These Toyota's head units are super reliable from factory and I don't want to jeopardise this. I am currently running an aftermarket off-road GPS unit (Garmin Overlander) Once I've had some experience with this unit, I'll do sure to do a review. Cheers, Nathan.

Rear setup is great. Is the height you chose for the drawers based on getting a flat floor with the rear seats? Possible sleeping platform use? Does the setup have a full floor underneath the drawers? Thinking about a lightweight setup that still utilizes drawers.
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 2 года назад
Thanks mate. The drawer height is the lowest that it can be to accomodate the locks on the drawers. This is just so we can fit more gear and our dog into the rear of the vehicle. There is a false floor underneath the drawer system and I believe Drifta, the manufacturer also make these false floors as stand alone items too. Cheers, Nathan.

Just found your channel. A nice simple build, like it. I have a Prado 150 on the way as we speak. Toyota tell me it has landed at the dock. One concern I have is the air filter box leaking. Did not know about this until recently. I see Donaldson have one for the 200 series but not the Prado. Do you know what people are doing to the recent Prado's for air filtration is the deserts

Thanks mate, they are a great vehicle for getting out and exploring 👍 So Donaldson are working on the Prado/Hilux etc airboxes, but it could still be a little time off yet. Personally I would wait, from what I hear, the problem of dusting isn't quite as common in these as the 1VDJ engines 👍

Will that wheel/tyre combo (17x8 P25 and 265/70R17) have no clearance issues even without that 2" lift and just on the stock suspension?
@XploringOz

Not going to be 100% sure on that one, have never tried it personally. I'd reckon it would probably touch on the front mudflaps. My best advice would be to jump onto some of the Prado forums as many people there have tried all sorts of combinations. Cheers, Nathan.

Thanks mate, glad you enjoy the channel. SO yes, I think that KDSS would definitely assist with that body roll issue. What is the verdict on the 3.0 versus the newer 2.8 engine? Between, say, a 2014 3.0 and a 2016 2.8 which would you choose?
@XploringOz
@XploringOz 4 года назад
Hey mate, each to their own, but I think I would lean towards the 3.0L. Although the 2.8L is probably a little more refined, and maybe a little quieter, in Australia anyway, there have been many reports of issues with Diesel Particular Filters (DPF's) which have cause consumers significant inconveniences and in some cases costs. The 3.0L does not come with a DPF. Saying that, the 3.0L are will start to become a little dated and it will become harder and harder to find a low km vehicle in good condition. Thanks, Nathan.

XploringOz Thanks for the advice! Is there a sweet spot in terms of km versus price with a Prado? Below 150k km?
@XploringOz

Not to sure about a sweet spot. But I try and look under about 100km and also try and find something that hasn’t been off-road too much. I look for stock cars that haven’t been too modified as an example.

@XploringOz
@XploringOz 3 года назад
Hey mate, so yes, roughly about a 3" lift. The ride is still great, probably even better than standard. Given that the vehicle is heavier and modified, the suspension suits the vehicle and provides great handling over varying terrain. There is definitely a noticeable difference getting in and out, however I'm 6" tall and this doesn't bother me. My wife is a fair bit shorter and it didn't take long for her to get used to the raised height. Cheers.
