Republic Square (Náměstí Republiky) is a city square in Prague, Czech Republic, at the boundary of the Old Town and New Town. The following significant buildings are on the square or nearby: Kotva Department Store, Municipal House, Powder Tower, Czech National Bank, and Palladium shopping mall. The square leads to Na příkopě Street, the most expensive street among all states of the V4, connecting it with Wenceslas Square.

Church of Our Lady before Týn
In the 11th century, the Old Town Plaza area was occupied by a Romanesque church built for foreign merchants coming to the nearby Týn Courtyard. It was replaced by an early Gothic Church of Our Lady before Týn in 1256. The church became the centre of the German inhabitants of Prague's Old Town. Construction of the present church began in the 14th century. The church was designed in the late Gothic style under the influence of Matthias of Arras and later Peter Parler. By the beginning of the 15th century, construction was almost complete; only the towers, the gable, and the roof were missing. The church was controlled by Hussites for two centuries, including John of Rokycan, future archbishop of Prague, who became the church's vicar in 1427. The building was completed in the 1450s, while the gable and northern tower were completed shortly after that during the reign of George of Poděbrady (1453-1471). His sculpture was placed on the gable below a giant golden chalice, the symbol of the Hussites. The southern tower was not completed until 1511, under architect Matěj Rejsek.
The lost Battle of White Mountain (1620) ushered in an era of harsh recatholicisation (part of the Counter-Reformation). Consequently, the sculptures of "heretic king" George of Poděbrady and the chalice were removed in 1626 and replaced by a statue of the Virgin Mary, featuring a giant halo made by melting down the chalice. In 1679, the church was struck by lightning, and the subsequent fire heavily damaged the old vault, which was later replaced by a lower Baroque vault.
Renovation works between 1876 and 1895 were later reversed during extensive exterior renovation from 1973 to 1995. The interior renovation is still in progress.

The Old Town Square is Prague's oldest and most important square. It is surrounded by historical buildings such as the Old Town City Hall with the famous Astronomical Clock, the imposing St. Nicholas Church and Church of Our Lady before Tyn, and many houses and palaces of various architectural styles and colourful history. It has been a center of Prague's Old Town since the Middle Ages, a marketplace crossing European merchants' roads. The first houses were built around the Old Town Square in the 12 and 13 centuries. Some present homes still have Romanesque or Gothic foundations, basements, or ground floors. The Old Town City Hall was built in the 14 century, and the Church of Our Lady before Tyn a little later. The Old Town Square became Prague Old Town's economic and political center.

Vladimir, my mom was so excited seeing the Tyn church inside. She got married there on April 19, 1958. It was not so colorful and opulent looking as it is today. Many thanks💖❤️♥️

There is so much to see and comment on from this walk but I will be brief! I see you were lucky and gave a a quick view inside Our Lady before Tyn, a church remarkable for its opulence. Your path on this walk showed us your expertise in making your way through streets and arcades once again You never show us the same pah twice. Thank you, Vladimir!

Thank you! Of course it's hard not to be repetitive, especially as it's all happening on the same streets! But I try to add some details not used before. Thank you 🖐😀❤

Does anyone know how to translate or what the name of the restaurant "V Cípu" means?
@PrVladimir
@PrVladimir 3 месяца назад
Previously, the restaurant was located on "V Cípu" street, hence its name.

Ahoj!

As far as I was able to understand from dictionaries, the word Cíp means tip or corner of something. In this case, probably the end of a dead-end street

This is the name of the street. The street was laid out at the foundation of the New Town of Prague in the middle of the 14th century. In 1395 it was called in Latin "in vico dicto Czyp". Later - "V čípku", "Cípek", since 1896 the current name "V Cípu". Your version is correct, it's probably a "small dead end street"
