You're a woman after my own heart. I lived off the grid for 15 years, most of it as a single Mom, 50 miles outside of town and still have the property. (Need to rebuild the house.) I would home can everything I could. After my divorce I ripped out the central bathroom, the pipes always froze in there, and turned it into a little pantry. I had an organic greenhouse where I grew 70-75% of our produce. Flat top wood stove where I cooked when the propane truck couldn't get in. I love it! I would go to town every 4-8weeks. No cow but used whipping cream (longer self life) and dry milk to make "milk". Chickens for eggs. Now I'm teaching my DBF the joys of having a stocked pantry. We're turning a whole room into our pantry. 😀 He loves my home canned spaghetti sauce, chili, stews and soups. WHOO HOO!

I use every open space for storage. I use my front door hall way which is unheated for potatoes and downstairs which is 10 degrees cooler than upstairs for onions and my food storage for every thing else. Got to learn to use what you have. Great video! Thank you.

I just found food grade buckets at Lowes. The lids are like a 2 in 1. They have a inner lid that screws out so its easy to scoop out supplies. Gamma lids I think they're called.

We took a small walk in closet and turned that into a pantry, added shelving on one side of the wall only, too narrow for shelves on both sides and that 31/2 ft x8ft space is holding a lot of food!!!! When I fill that up, I will shove canned items under beds and floors of other closets! Make do with what you have, make it simple and easy.

I'm impressed, and when do you have the time, you must be a great organizer. I have been doing this, on a smaller scale, without the canning, for years, it gives you a secure feeling. In fact, I used to get flack about my toilet paper backup, until this year that is.

You took me back to my 1950's childhood in rural northeastern Connecticut. Mostly dairy farms and corn, old houses and barns, root cellars, wood burning cook stoves and recycling before the word recycling existed. I feel deep gratitude for having grown up that way. You've put a modern twist on all of that. I love it. I now live in an 800+ year old home in Italy, and wouldn't you think I'd be able to live a homestead sort of life. But you would be wrong. I can by olive oil 10 liters at a time from the olive trees outside the door, and wine from my landlord's vineyard, but flour in bulk, baking soda, baking powder (barely exists) and a whole host of supplies easy to come by back in the States are hard to come by here. When I saw your huge jar of vanilla my eyes nearly popped out of my head. The tiniest bottle of vanilla here costs the earth, as lemon is more frequently used in Italian baking. I'm heading to your blog to find your recipe. Instead of a basement I have two cantinas, storage spaces sort of like low ceiling sheds, fine for gardening tools and such, but so damp I wouldn't dare put foodstuffs out there. Even firewood, unless it's seasoned to an extreme degree, stays damp. Nothing at all like the basement of my Italian grandparents in CT where the array of canned goods in glass jars was a world unto itself. Along with my grandfather's copper still for making grappa.😂😵‍💫 I follow you on Pinterest and now on RU-vid. I look forward to other videos. Thank you for this lovely tour and for all the memories you brought back to me.

I have a grocery store about 10 miles away but being a rural area they don't always carry all the things I might want/need for a recipe or if they do it's expensive. My amin goal for a well stocked 'larder' is being able to make pretty much whatever I want at anytime without having to run out for some random ingredient....tacos 3 days this week....I'm okay because if I run out of taco seasoning I have everything to make the seasoning. Just a simple example but that's my reason for a well stocked pantry

Great video. Growing up we had something like what you have only it was with store can goods, along with paper goods (my parents were from the depression). Us kids called it "mom's home grocery store". I have the same only with mostly home canned goods and some store bought that I don't can or have run out of the home grown. Love the jar containers for storage. Have been weeding out plastic containers though my husband prefers the plastic, he is coming around. My herbs and spices are separated and put into alphabetical order. Makes it easier for me to grab. LOL!! Thanks again.

We have been working on this as well. I've always been a big believer in preparedness, but when all this stuff hit, I realized how woefully unprepared we actually were. I'm now challenging myself to see how long I can stay out of the grocery store. We did a big pantry stock up for staples recently, our garden is producing, our pullets should start laying in the next couple months, and I plan to do a large meat order in the fall - some of which I will freeze, and some I will can so we're less dependent on electricity. Thanks for sharing your pantry tour, I always love seeing how other homesteaders organize their pantries.

Great advice! If you don't have a cabinet, or pantry to use one can use a solid shelving unit/book shelf. If the shelf has wire shelves, just line the shelf with wood or cardboard. I use a couple of shelves in my dining room as my extended pantry. My plan is to hang a curtain in front of it eventually.

I started my pantry when I was 21. I budgeted a certain amount every month for groceries. If I had money left over, I began using that money to buy beans and rice initially-my line of work was feast or famine so I thought it would be a good idea to have some food that I liked on hand when I didn’t have money to go to the store. I’m very envious of your pantry!
@ecocentrichomestead6783

I make as much as I can from scratch because my only suspect for triggering my illness symptoms is additives in commercially supplied foods. Where I live, a hurricane can cut the exit from town during the warmer seasons and a blizzard during the winter. I am 30 min from the nearest grocery store Because of those, I keep a one month supply of perishables that I have to buy, 3+ months of non perishables, and try to grow an entire year worth of storage crops. A basement cellar is an excellent idea. My cellar is some distance from the house. Quite an inconvenience during winter.
