MODES - Choose One: Use Aperture Priority when you want to control the depth of field Use Shutter Priority when you want to control motion (freezing action or creating blur) Use Manual Mode when you have plenty of time to shoot Use Program Mode when you want to quickly capture an image but still retain some control - i.e get a shot fast and haven’t got time to fiddle with the settings

Another great video Matti. I’m a big fan of P mode. It’s easy to fine tune with Program shift assigned to the one dial and Exposure Compensation to the other. It also keeps my gear ready for my fast moving grandkids and allows me to concentrate a lot more on composition. Plus the modern cameras are smarter than me anyways!

I agree that P mode has been dismissed as an intermediate stage between the full auto modes and Tv Av and M, often by RU-vidrs who have little or no actual experience of working as a pro photographer. Thank you for debunking this myth, Matti. For many genres P is, as you say, all you need. Why over-complicate? I use P on my Canon 6D as part of the C1 settings for general photography and opportunistic shots coupled with auto ISO 3200 max preset but with exposure shift set to ISO so that the camera will automatically go to a higher ISO if needed. Just one dial to change as necessary and you are guaranteed a good result. C2 has Av for landscape photography and outside portraits, with ISO selected manually so that the shutter speed is the variable. Manual with auto ISO is fantastic if you shoot sports and moving wildlife, but is seldom necessary for other genres.

The shoot in manual mode mindset got popular in the dark era of DSLR when newbies were showing off their off-the-auto wagon skills. That would make almost all the old timers who began with manual cameras, very savvy in the science of photography and might even be at professional level. 😊 BTW, these people also worshiped the old SLR kit lens (Nifty Fifty) and created the urban legend of the modern version of ROT.

Great video. I think you really got to the point of the Program mode. I think one of the things that maybe wasn't addressed was ISO. Program will set the shutter and aperture but ISO, unless set to auto, will remain constant. In this sense I think program mode really should be equated to ISO priority mode. That said, the reason I don't shoot in P is my aversion to letting the meter control more than one exposure value. Probably my favorite way to shoot is in manual with auto ISO (100-6400 on my EOS R).

My Olympus E-M5 with the slow kit lens tended to set the aperture to quite high values and thus diffraction, while shorter shutter speeds would have been possible. That‘s why I stopped using it on a regular basis and switched back to A mode (which stands for Adept 😉). But a quick test shows me, that my GX 800 and a more recent Olympus model do it better!
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
On the GX800 it also helps if you turn on the auto shutter, so that the camera also uses electronic shutter when needed. The mechanical shutter only goes to 1/500 and can lead to unnecessarily high aperture number in bright light.

So my first camera was a Pentax with match needle metering. I'm Not a if you don't use M mode you're not a real photographer kind of guy. I've never gotten comfortable wit P mode unless I set the camera to a specific iso. I typically use aperture priority and pretty use EC pretty liberally. When I use program shift I never know what's going to change, aperture, shutter speed, or iso. If I use EC I never know what's going to change, aperture, shutter speed, or iso. If I set iso to a specific value, then using EC seems like it seems I'm not doing anything fundamentally different than using aperture or shutter priority and using EC. I recognize the program mode is usually capable of deterring a good exposure, I just don't see that it gives me anything I don't get using aperture priority (vast majority of my work) or shutter priority (used much less often but when wanting to freeze and or show motion). I reserve manual for use with strobes and working slowly on tripods. Am I missing something?

P-mode gets my vote too. Originally, I did not really appreciate it. That was before I one day studied how to use it properly which involved discovering the Shift-function. Nowadays, I find myself keeping my Lumix in P-mode most of the time, unless there is a specific reason to use A/S/M instead. It is also a question of trusting your camera to make reasonable choices when in P-mode. Now I just wonder if you could make a case for iA-mode next. :-)

@bfs5113
@bfs5113 4 года назад
While a lot photographers talked Exposure Triangle but not much of Exposure Value (EV). A Program Shift in general is the same as reading/selecting a different pair of f-stop and shutter speed values on an Incident Meter/EV chart and still maintaining the same EV. Back then, we used EV to convey the required exposure information, such as EV 15 (sunny day with bright sky). What program mode does is offering a certain combination value for that particular EV, as determine by the meter (e.g., EV15: ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/1000s). Google Exposure Value Chart and find EV 15, for instance. Then look across and you will see the 'program shift'. Why? Because one may need a certain aperture (shallower DOF) or shutter speed (faster for actions), for example. BTW, the aperture and shutter speed rings of certain old Hasselblad lenses can be locked together, thus turning the rings still retains the same EV (~program shift).

sulantoblog No kiva.

Hi Matti, what´s the differences between P - Mode and iA or iA+ Mode. Greetings from Berlin!
@CarolyneMacMillan
@CarolyneMacMillan 4 года назад
Auto chooses everything and doesn't let you adjust anything. So you are stuck with whatever shutter speed or aperture the camera chooses for you. P mode chooses a shutter and aperture combination but by scrolling the dial you can choose the combination. So you can quickly choose more or less depth of field or a faster or slower shutter speed and still get the correct exposure. All by moving one dial.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
On P you can use program shift, auto or manual ISO, select any AF mode and generally use all the camera functions that you can on ASM modes as well. On iA or iA+ you can't use manual ISO, can't use program shift, can't select AF mode etc. If you go to the camera menu, you'll see many grayed out items. It's meant to be a true point and shoot mode, where the user don't have to do much else than compose and press the shutter.

It always amuses me to hear photographers going on about manual mode which pretty much typecasts them as Amateur with a capital "A". There is a reason that Program mode is included in PASM rather than the automatic section; its a fully professional feature provided for professionals. It first appeared on medium format film cameras such as Rolleiflex and Mamiya TLRs mechanically locking the aperture and shutter speed together for press photographers who dont have time for this nonsense, they lock the exposure on arrival and adjust the two together as they run with the pack. Today many Magnum Pros use it and famously Martin Parr heaps scorn on people who dont like the mode. On the street its the only mode to use; it lets you change DoF fast with your back thumb dial as the scene in front of you changes; it takes some practice but its a skill worth developing and I pretty much use it all the time on the street, maybe A mode where things are less pressing. No its not the Pussy mode, its one of the most difficult modes to use effectively as you pretty much need to know what DoF will set with each aperture as you cant go and check it but, its also the fastest mode and speed is the essence in Street and Sport. Have fun ;-)
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад

@johannesgeenen4169

It is a common misperception that an automatic mode (P,A,S,M) restricts the control of the photographer. That is not true. You always have two dials to control the exposure and the ratio of aperture value and shutter speed. In many cases however, full control is not required and the automatic allows the photographer to reduce to one control max only - depending on the preferences. Using P is a very good starting point. The photographer however should always know, how aperture, speed and exposure comp. are influencing the result and actively drive automatic when needed for a better image.

Hi, I saw the video and you explained it clearly, but I don't really see when I would use this in real life? For example like someone said, they prefer Aperture priority to control DOF. And I think that too; DOF makes a huge impact to my personal experience, so I always have that on lockdown. Shutter priority is self explanatory: I need to capture something fast, or I need to capture water flowing at just the right shutter. And manual for things like moon photography, which uses outrageously dark settings that automatic modes probably wouldn't get correct. Could you provide any more discussion on the place of the P mode?

I think I rationalized the P quite well in the video. Maybe I'll make another video on the topic some day, because it would just be too much to explain here. I take it you're also using a handheld light meter to take your light readings? I haven't done that since my film days. Brings back good memories but was so much more expensive then :) Otherwise you're actually using the same engineering as all the other modes by using the camera's inbuilt light metering to set your exposures.
@saulgrimmer2585
@saulgrimmer2585 4 года назад
I wish program mode was really programmable, if we could program in our preferred aperture, shutter speed, and iso ranges and tell the camera what to do if light levels force the camera outside our range. For example: Range S: 1/60 s and higher, A: 3.5 to 5.6, ISO 200-400. Priority S, then A, then ISO. If light levels fall below the range, first open aperture to max, then drop shutter speed to 1/30 s, then let ISO rise to 800, then let shutter speed drop to 1/15, then let ISO increase to 1600. If ISO 1600 isn't enough, let shutter speed decrease further. . . With enough tinkering with the programming, and a few different modes such as portrait, landscape, sport, night-scape to program in the manor of "intelligent auto," the photographer could teach the camera to almost always select the exact same settings as the photographer him or herself would have selected.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
Nothing is perfect and everyone's perfect would be different. Many can't even use the current camera features properly and while your proposal sounds interesting, how many would really go though the trouble of teaching their camera. And, there is always the M mode for those difficult situations.
@saulgrimmer2585
@saulgrimmer2585 4 года назад
The simplest user interface would be a 3 by 6 table or matrix with 3 columns (Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO) and 6 lines [Preferred Maximum, Preferred Minimum, Absolute Maximum, Absolute Minimum, Priority (rank 1,2, and 3 of which column to prefer), and Preferred Direction (High, Middle, or Low to direct the the camera on which end of the range of preferred values to choose). This wouldn't give complete programmable control, but would be useful. Or, the camera could learn what you prefer by how you adjust from the automatic P values. What I would really find useful is more control over auto-ISO than just setting a maximum. The ability to set 3 or more different maximum ISO's, depending on shutter speed (both absolute and multiples of reciprocal focal length) or aperture limits would be prefect. For low-light candid shots, you often don't have much time to adjust exposure values.

Could you tell me if you think the P mode would give me better photographs on the GX85 camera rather than using the Ai (Automatic setting)?
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
I can't tell you which mode gives you the best results, because I'm not you😀However, there are some differences between iA and P. You have to try the P for yourself.

One thing you failed to mention is that the different exposure modes will affect the behavior of P Mode for good or for bad.

I have read the section of my DMC-FZ1000 about P mode (program AE mode) about a dozen of times and I'm still not sure of how it's supposed to differ from the fully automatic intelligent Ai mode. There is a graphic that shows how two parameters remain symetrically locked (program shift) regardless of exposure, but the explanation remains foggy.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
The P mode will only adjust the three exposure values, exposure time, aperture and ISO, if auto ISO is on. On the P you can use program shift and either manual or auto ISO. The Ai, instead, will only allow auto ISO, can't use program shift and in general does allow less user involvement. Also on the Ai you can't choose all AF modes. That's how it is on MFT cameras, but I suppose it's similar on the FZ1000 as well.

@@mattisulanto Thanks. AFAIK the FZ1000 counts as an MFT. ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/camera/om/dmc-fz1000_en_adv_om.pdf

Think of it this way. In Auto the camera picks the perfect exposure but it chooses everything and you can't change anything at all. So you may not have enough depth of field or your shutter speed might be too slow to capture a moving object. The camera doesn't know what you're shooting so auto will never take perfect images. In P mode it is like auto in that it picks the perfect exposure automatically for you but you get to adjust your depth of field and shutter speed by scrolling the wheel. It picks the right exposure combinations with whatever shutter speed or aperture you pick. It also allows you to use exposure compensation to lighten or darken your image if needed. I should say here that I don't have my ISO set to auto. I set that manually. P mode also adjusts your ISO if it's set to auto.

What is the difference then between iA and P modes, I normally use iA? I guis I need to look at the manual again.
@CarolyneMacMillan
@CarolyneMacMillan 4 года назад
