I think he may have confused the point actually. He spoke more on lyric writing and "production". When he says production it seems he is referring to classic hip hop type production which is different than live instrumentation and Jazz type production. Lauryn was working with bad ass classically trained jazz cats on her album. This is what made the album so beautiful though. AT the same time, if you only have a dope melody you may or may not have a song. In order to turn a melody in to a song you need key changes, chord progressions, a break as well as dope lyrics (assuming there is a vocalist on the song) and an arrangement that makes everything fit together. I think what happened is Lauryn was coming from a hip hop background had some dope song ideas and melodies that she brought to these musicians and they assisted her with turning those ideas in to classic songs and a classic album but then she didn't want o give them the credits they deserved. Either she didn't understand the roles they played or she was so full of her own hype that she felt she didn't have to and they should be honored just to work with her. You can see some evidence to support my theory in her second attempt at a solo project- The MTV Unplugged album which shows amazing promise lyrically and melodically but was never really "finished". You can feel the strength of her spirit and will in the songs but they lack the finishing touches of arrangement, proper chord structure, etc... It's a shame we as a listening audience never got more of what Lauryn could give us but I fear it's more Lauryn's fault than anyone else's. You can not treat your collaborators as though they are beneath you (unless you have Stevie Wonder or Prince type talent where you can write lyrics, come up with melodies, and play just about every instrument).

@moe betta I agree with your point but I don't believe he was confused. The question proposed to Pras was "did lauryn hill write all the lyrics" and he replied '1000 percent'. He further explained lauryn hill hip hop background contributed to her perspective of what she considers the role of production should be. A production consisting of Jazz, classical artist and muscians.We both know within the jazz and classical world the roles are well defined in comparison to an hip hop setting. From the narrative surrounding this discussion of credibility of production is quite obvious the supporting musicans were aware of their roles. Lauryn Hill was not. If you read lauryn hill response to Robert Glasper, she referred to her ignorance without admitting to it. The ongoing argument has brought to light a number of comcerns to me as a wavering fan of Lauryn Hill - her inexperience during the production of miseducation, her unsubstantiated arrogance (agreeing with Robert Glasper) and lack of humility... however what was also brought to my attention was how ultra sensitive Lauryn is and the unappreciated position of Pras, playing the diplomat between two incredible talents with toxic personalities and yet remains candid and respectful to both parties.

Moe Betta But Lauryn did produce a few songs herself like A rose is a rose in 1997 for Aretha Franklin and that was before she had that team that helped her produce Miseducation. I think Lauryn wrote all her stuff most definitely and I think she had minimal guitar skills but when it came to other instruments, she probably just directed people to play it how she heard in her head. I feel like they made variations and she agreed to it and they probably felt like the variations they made deserved to have more credit than they got. But idk, that’s just my theory. I just feel like she directs instrument players and sometimes she probably allows them to have a little freedom in how they play it but that can be a sticky situation when they add something to the song that was their own idea. Lyrically, i have no doubt she wrote all of it.

The People who sued her never had a hit before and had only a couole forgetable minor hits after working with other artist. The miseducation was the pinnicle and highlight of their careers. And most of the music of miseducation were replayed by James Poysner and Che Pope for the final cut . Lauryn Hill found them, named them New-Ark and helped to develop them, not the other way around. Most of the music on the miseducation are samples from 70s music that lauryn liked. Beyonce and Alicia Keys did the same formula for "Songs in A minor" and "dangerously in love". They Listen to old songs the like and put a hip hop beat to it to the cattiest part of it and then sing their song over it. Lauryn Hill just did it better than everyone else.
