The coastal town of Udupi though small, has a vibrant tradition and occupies a very special niche with regards to classical music. It has produced an illustrious group of masters who could not only enthrall audiences but also
dedicated their lives to training new generations of aspiring musicians. The efforts of our elders have inspired current practitioners and lovers of music from this town to create Kalashree Sur Sangeet Prathistan, Udupi - a registered sabha
set up in March 2013 - with the aim of fostering the growth of classical music in the coastal Karnataka region.
The sabha is a forum where we can enjoy renditions by distinguished artistes of national and international repute as also one where upcoming local talent gets an opportunity to
perform. The sabha aims to honour the memory and contributions of one of Udupi's earliest pioneers and torchbearers of the Hindustani tradition, late Pandit G Madhav Bhat. Pandit Bhat was an exponent of the Gwalior and Agra
Gharana of Hindustani Classical Music and was instrumental in giving shape to the teaching and propagation of classical music in the Dakshina Kannada region. As a tribute to his life
and work, the sabha has commemorated the day of demise of Pandit Bhat - 18th July 2006 - by organizing a day long musical event titled "Pandit G Madhav Bhat Smruti Sangeet
Samaaroh’, every year in July starting from the year 2013.
*About Prasad Khaparde*
Prasad Khaparde is a most senior disciple of Ustad Rashid Khan of the
Rampur Sahaswan Gharana, one of the top most vocalists of India today.
He was a scholar at the famous Sangeet Research Academy of Kolkata.
He hails from Ghatanji, a small town in Vidarbha, Maharashtra. He was born
in 1973, in a family of music loving educationists. His initial training in music was under the Guidance of eminent Gurus, Shri Bhalerao, D.V Panke, Pandita Sumantai Choudhari and Late Padma Bhushan Ustad Abdul Rashid Khan. He received a Masters Degree in Indian Classical Vocal Music in 1997 from Amaravati University.
Prasad has also sung for the Marathi movie Thaang by renowned director Amol Palekar. Prasad has given an excellent performance at the coveted Sawai Gandharwa Sangeet Mahotsav in Pune; Shree Baba Harivallabh Sangeet Sammelan, Jalandhar; Sahela Re -Organised by Amol Palekar on 80th Birthday Tribute to Gansaraswati Pandita Kishoritai Amonkar; Pt.Jitendra Abhisheki Mahotsav, Goa; Tansen Samaroh, Gwalior; Kesarbai Kerkar Samaroh, Goa; Xavier’s Janfest ’14 Festival, Mumbai; Pt. Vasantrao Deshpande Samaroh, Nagpur; Mandu Festival of MP Govt; Saptak Festival, Ahmadabad; Centenary Tribute To Bharat Ratna M. S. Prasad has had very successful and prestigious tours in various countries:
Dubai, Muscat, New Zeeland, Australia, America, Canada, Singapore, Indonesia, Paris & Turkey.
He worked as a Faculty (Guru) in Kala Academy, Goa, and he is a recognised All India Radio Top Grade Artist. Established Empanelment Artist of ICCR, New Delhi. His dedication and hard work has brought him many awards like The Prestigious Gansaraswati Puraskar, All India Radio Competition- First Prize, Navras Record Award, Maharshi Gandharva Ved Award -Delhi, Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Memorial Award - Pune. Like his Guru, his sonorous and mellifluous voice takes the audiences by storm wherever he sings. Along with his ardent riyaaz, Prasad also teaches Hindustani vocal music and has many disciples from India and abroad.
