Praying mantids are the perfect insect science experiment and pet. Education and school lessons are important, so watch our egg sac / ootheca hatch, and watch our nymph praying mantis grow up, eat bugs and get huge! can't wait for my huge praying mantis at the end of this experiment!

I appreciate the video. I found an egg case in my native flora class at school, and was wondering how to properly handle the situation. Answered all of my questions!

I got a praying mantis a few weeks ago and today when I went to feed her after school.... I SEE AN EGG SACK! This will be my first time ever hatching these things so this video really helped! They were laid in my room, which is always the same temperature so I assume it’s safe, but I am still researching so that I can see everyone’s perspective on raising nymphs, to see what I can do if something doesn’t work or just to try a different technique. This helped a lot! I am honestly stressed about it so I can’t explain how released I am right now.

I liked the vid, my mom hatched some praying mantises a few years back and now they find the cocoons every year in the fall and protect them until they hatch in spring and then watch em hatch, usually the first or second week of June in Michigan.. This year she found a freshly laid egg case on a 3 foot long 3 inch thick stick laying in the grass that had fallen off a black walnut tree. She picked it up thinking it might be too moist directly on the ground and leaned it against the house and was going to put it somewhere safe but when she walked away for a few minutes and came back to get it, a bird was standing on the stick pecking the crap out of it and pulled the egg case apart! :( We found a few more so it's okay, but that one was a nice big one, hope the bird was satisfied with his meal lol. There's a really small one stuck to the outside wall of the shed and she wants to take a razor blade and slice/gently scrape it off the wall but doesn't want to damage it, anyone think that would hurt it?

That's so sad, my mantis was laying an egg sack but then the crickets in her habitat ate her and her eggs. I got to wake up to that, knowing that it was ALL my fault. Later I had a dream that she was still alive and I told her I was so sorry.

I am plagued with soil gnats every fall/spring in my chameleons enclosures so I breed mantids as pest control/ feeders, I hang egg cases in each of my enclosures they fatten up fairly quickly and are a excellent food source for my chams. I've only had a few reach 3/4 inches but they disappear quickly due to the hungry lizards. I breed the survivor's in hopes of making a breed of super mantid lol. I have one very observant male veiled chameleon that sees the egg sack and charges toward it chomping the unhached sack.

We were bringing groceries into the house about six weeks ago, and we had the door propped open. All of the sudden my 8 Yr. Old son said "Dad what is that thing?" A large praying Mantis had come in through the door. I picked it up, and it crawled up on top of my shoulder and stayed right there. After my Son marveled over it for a hour, I told him we had to take it back out and let it go. I picked it up and took it outside. It would not leave my hand. I set it down and it flew back up and landed on me several times. We ended up keeping it. I feed it crickets and meal worms. I water it with an eye dropper. We have had it for 6 weeks now, and all of the sudden there was this funny foamy looking thing in the pen yesterday morning. She laid her eggs!! With the information from this video, I am going to place the ootheca in the back yard in a good safe spot and pray for them to hatch in the spring. Hopefully my Mantis will make it through the winter in captivity. She loves to just sit on my hand and clean her claws off. She is so cool. My Son thinks she is awesome too, and his friends at school can't believe the cool videos of her catching and eating crickets.

My daughter was capturing lantern flies off of a tree with a water bottle. The people that lived there had the sticky trap wrapped around the tree since there were so many. Luckily my daughter noticed a praying mantis that was stuck on the trap. She saved her & brought her to me. I wet a paper towel and let her drink from it. I offered her a lantern fly as a snack. Since her legs were a little messed up from the trap, I decided to keep her overnight & make sure she was able to go back into the wild. I never took care of one before so I wanted her to survive. She stayed on my arm/shoulder the whole time up until I had to go to sleep. She kept wiggling her butt & at first I didn’t even know what it was that was coming out.. she was trying to lay her egg sack on my sweater right before bed. I thought it was poop. She didn’t want to get off of me which I why I ended up putting her on black shorts similar to the zip up hoodie I had on, and by the morning I looked at where I left her & she just finished laying her egg sac. I didn’t even know until someone on Facebook told me she was pregnant on a photo I posted. Then I put it together like wow that wasn’t poop. 😮 That morning she seemed ok enough that she would be able to hold onto a tree so I put her on a nice big one in a good area for her to survive. She went up the tree & I never saw her again. 🥲 What a cool experience. Now I’m going to try to hatch these babies!

Interesting vid - nicely done! So my fiance found a mantid, and we kept it. This thing is way too attached to us - she hates her aquarium - she only wants to be with us. Today, she laid an egg pod. I watched the video, but am unsure if I should keep the pod in the refrigerator for the entire winter? How long do they take to hatch? Isn't the fridge too cold? I'm guessing my temp is about 42 - 45 F. I live in Penna., so I know the outdoors is much colder. Also, will the Mom die, now that she's laid her pod? This morning, she would not move at all. Once the eggs were laid, she's quite active - although she is very "clingy" to people. Is it ok to separate her from the eggs? Thanks!

When setting up a Mantid "terrarium", do you recommend giving the egg sacs a wee bit of a misty spray with a water bottle (every day or every other day) or is it best not to spray any type of mist and to just let them alone until the nymphs emerge from the egg sac? Thanking you in advance for your response!
@YukiMoonlight
@YukiMoonlight 7 лет назад
Generally you can keep the ootheca at the same temperture and humidity as the adult animals themselfs. So depending on the type of Mantid you will need to keep the Humidity high enough with misting.

How long do I keep them in the fridge for then? I have a female that has layed to big sacs on a vertical screen I have the mama in so I took the screen and put it on top of a wide mouth mason jar and poped some holes in for air. So now the screen will prevent them from getting out and they I think can still drop out properly. So the mama had a male in her cage that she killed after they mated(cool to watch) then mama layed the two sacs and I have the jar in the fridge door. Am I doing this right? How long till I take em back out to room temp? After they hatch in the fridge? It's not to clear in this vid as to when how long and where and sfyercare for when the worries drop out....room temp after? I will look for more vids but I just thought I would ask first now

I have not idea if it is a fertilized egg and kinda wanted to see if it would hatch. Problem is that I'm not looking to keep them all in separate containers for the winter. I was wondering if there is a time limit on how long they can be refrigerated for? And what would you think the probability of it having fertile eggs would be?

I have four praying mantis eggs that did not hatch over the Summer, I'm guessing it's because the air conditioner kept it too cool inside the house. It is now November and I have the heater on all the time, will they finally hatch? Or will they never hatch now? They are stored in plastic containers with air slits and when I remember, I had a small enough of water at the bottom for humidity. I'm scared they somehow could become duds if that's a thing.

Hi, lastly my ghost mantis(phyllocrania paradoxa) have laid an ootheca and I am super excited, I read a lot about hatching ootheca and people write that it will hatch in spring, so in about 5 months. On the other hand people write that it will take about 4-6 weeks after the mantis made an ootheca so what I have to do? Do I have to put it in some cold temperatures around 10-13 degrees and wait until March and then raise the temperature up to hatch in April? Or just put the ootheca in box in appropriate temperature - 25 degrees and wait those few weeks?
