Michel Houellebecq isn't for everyone. If you want to read him, though, here are some thoughts on six of his books and my opinion on where to start. Also mentioned, Bubblegum by Adam Levin.
Submission is the one of the greatest novels of twenty first century. My Number 1 book for sure and for this novel alone Houellebecq is my literary hero. Period.
I am almost done with Submission and yes it is good. To be honest the politics is kind of hard to understand at times but Francois is a cool character, and I enjoy the parallels between Huysmans and Catholicism and Francois and Islam. I like Rediger's meditation on religion and Francois' meditation on love and how relationships are viewed in the West
I completely agree with your take on Serotonin, it was one of the first novels in a long time I DNF'd. I still haven't found the strength to try another Houellebecq book but after this video I just might have to give him a second try.
funny, serotonin is one of the 1st in a while that i want to re-read! but i come from farm family, so maybe its subject matter that appeals. but im not french or muslim & i loved his futuristic take on what if france went islamic all the way. he's so wry
I think that it’s interesting that you don’t mention at all his political leanings and what many consider his anti-Muslim sentiments. I have not read him, and I admit that, but I do know about his controversial opinions. Why not mention this?
This author is one of the only big names that I have no interest in. Sounds like hedonistic smut that is supposed to be good because it knows it is hedonistic smut.
