The single shot 12ga videos and 21st Century Longhunter series’ are some of the best videos you have made. Very glad to see more of the trusty single shot.
I've always loved black powder for as long as I can remember. Excellent shooting kit you have, no bells and whistles needed, just the minimum gear for your hunt/trek. Hope your hunt went well. Anytime spent out in the woods is a reward in itself!
I'm glad I added you on Facebook and stumbled across your post about this video I wasn't getting notified of your videos very often I'll have to keep an eye out more often for them, like I said over on Facebook, the H&R 12 gauge 3" MOD pardner was my first gun I bought I figured it was one gun that I could afford and it could do everything I wanted to do go hunting with my grandpa defend your home whatever you wanted to do yes there's better options but at the time you could pick one up for $80 brand new out the door 90 bucks, for a super nice gun.
i got one in 12 gauge and 20 gauge, used it for deer to rabbits. slugs, buck, bird shot all work good. i use my bp adapter in a cooey.. one best investments i made.
Thanks Dave. Sam Fadala is a big promoter of using Paper Hornet nest material in muzzleloaders. It helps to not scorch the patch, to get a more consistent barrel pressure. Put just a small wad on the powder charge before you seat the patched ball.
Since you're using fluff wadding have you ever tried copper speedloaders? You can take a copper tube the same diameter or a little bigger then that's 72 put a bull cap on one end load your powder fluff then ball and bull plug it again. I always mark one of my bull plugs to let me know which end is the powder. It's a pretty quick speedloader system. And works with shot also. Great video and happy Hunting.Keep your eye on the skyline and keep your powder dry.
I got to admire your love and patience with old timey things. I myself would just head out with ready-made shells. Don't get me wrong, just because I personally wouldn't do it, doesn't mean I don't like seeing the form and function of it.
I’m learning so much, it’s like the American musketeer never died just evolved. I wish hi point would make a us made double barrel 2 3/4 inch survival double barrel
Great video. Black powder is super cool. I'm planning on picking up a new single shot shotgun. I've used my old one for testing black powder shot shells. I like the way they work. Great stuff here as always.
Nice hunting bag ty for your knowledge on black powder shooting,I've personally never had the opportunity to shoot one,I like the conversion kit that adapts a shotgun into a muzzleloader.👍☘️
Nice man. Still have my Pardner. The "survival furniture" on it, to hold all the adapters inside, etc. Lady made a paracord sling. We can't use 209 here in Idaho for deer, but still fun. I just use an spent shell for it. But do love their adapters.
I saw your videos on using the 12 gauge as a black powder rifle and I have taken what you showed and used it with my own as I don't have the same type shotgun that you have I do have a single shot Ria traditions 12 gauge shotgun that I use the same way it only has smoothbore I do not have the rifle board and I wish I did but I carry pretty much everything that you just described there except that I don't have a round ball mould. I also used an empty 45-70 shell to use as my powder measure although I don't use the whole thing. Anyway that works fantastic I'm very pleased with the way I have mine set up and I'm sure you are also. As I don't have lead shot I use BB's when I want to shoot shot that is until I can come up with some lead shot but I do have the stuff to melt it and make my own round ball once I ever get a mould. It would do people to watch your videos on that because it teaches exactly what you were just talking about. By the way I don't use the short Lanes adapter but I do use a 12 gauge cut off shotgun shell but you still have to catch it before it flies out and you still have to clean it like you would your adapter only a few extra steps that's all. I really do like shooting this little single shot that way. Thank you so much for those videos they really did help me to shoot my little single shot shotgun. PS I also tried it with my grandson's 410 and it works great that way also. Thanks for the video and always remember to stay vigilant! Sorry this was so long.
Good info.. i may look into that adapter for slinging some slugs. And that's a really nice murse Dave. I really should upgrade from the milsurp gas mask bags I been using.
An interesting thing about that case sodbuster. I used to have one just like it. I went through an airport and a jail metal detector and it did not set them off. I was so used to carrying it that I forgot it was in my pocket. That was years ago and the detectors are probably much more sensitive now.
You could easily make provisions to attach a ramrod to that shotgun. Silver solder a ramrod pipe onto the barrel, then drill a hole lengthwise through the forend. You may have to offset it to the right or left to clear the latch assembly but those forends are pretty beefy so you should be good to go. Then just remove the ramrod when your using cartridges.
The only thing in a shtf ordeal ya can’t make is primers ? Is this where the tc firestorm flintlock shines Dave? Cause every time I watch your skills they help me think of other options .nice video Dave ! 👍🏻
Have seen you other vids on this set-up. I have the H&R 12 slug smoothbore gun. I bought it in 1979 when I was a junior in highschool. Been to their website, and they're always out of stock! They are great, versatile guns! In fall of 2003, my oldest son, shot his first deer, 10 point, at age of 13. Thanks for sharing, Steve
I had the 4 peace set of Hunsmen 45Bp 58 BP 12Ga loved that 12 And they did a 45-70 to match an loved it. I got 2 SB2 Reserves and 13 Bearls one it 50Cal In line.
Love you content Dave. However you have the info for the SB1 and the SB2 backwards. The SB1 is the non high pressure caliber frame ( 12ga, 20ga, 30-30 etc). The SB2 is the frame that can handle the high pressure calibers (30-06 .243 etc). SB1 frames are ductile(cast) iron, SB2 are investment cast alloy steel. Amazing video otherwise. I just think you got the information mixed up. Please keep up the great work and never stop doing what you do.
Ok I am not a muzzleloader but I’m thinking about it. As a kid I had a Navy 36 caliber and it was a blast to shoot. On a rainy day the smoke from shooting was so thick I lost viz with the target. But I digress. My question is can you use a mini ball as your projectile in your H & R? Just curious. Really enjoyed your video. Thank you Sir.
I have the adapters for both 12 and 20 gauge. I haven’t used them yet but they look solid and well made. Btw how do you feel about casting magnum shot into round ball? A lot of folks say the antimony makes the ball too hard. Any thoughts?
Sadly we can't use the muzzleloader adapter here in WV or VA. While I love the 21st. century long hunter series, journals from the yurt is my favorite.
I have the adapter for my NEF, but use 3F for my Traditions Hawken .50 cal. Would GOEX 3F work for this application? I got 3 deer tags filled this season and now, it's coyote season so the 12GA NEF Single Shot is oiled & cleaned and I have my vintage camera pouches that I pick up at garage sales & flea markets for 25 cents filled with various shells in my $2 canvas shoulder bag.
Hey there David I've been a big fan for years and I plan on visiting your school some day for a course. I have been tattooing professionally for 13 years and I would jump at the chance to breathe some new life into your ink there chief. No offence intended I just know I could make them SOLID for the rest of your life and would do it free of charge. I would obviously show you pictures of my work first but if this is something you would be interested in I could bring my machines and and everything necessary to do the job perfectly. Sterilant chemicals and single use hermetically sealed supplies included. This would be my gift to you as a fan brother and for the privilege of knowing I tattooed David Canterbury.
Chewed ball isn't more arrow dynamic it actually creates more drag, that in itself keeps the ball from drifting off in any direction and keeps it going straighter. more accurate, generally.
Where could we find a .710 or .720 round ball mold? I’m having a heck of a time finding one and the one from track of the wolf scissor type has been out of stock forever! God bless!
Just came across this video. Thank you. I have the NEF Tracker 2 12ga. What are your thoughts of loading a Sabot slug in it with black powder? Appreciate your content.
I wonder if this adapter would be legal for PA's muzzleloader season? I know they have said an AR with its gas system removed, making it a manually operated single shoot, is still illegal for deer. (Dumb, I know, but that's our Game Commission.)
Thats a good question! Id recommend checking with your local game warden office. I doubt this adapter would be legal in Minnesota because of a statute having to do with muzzleloading revolvers. But because of the way its worded a Judge could interpret it to mean any gun with the POSSIBILITY of being loaded from the breach.
Is this type of muzzle loading good for a first timer to use? Or is there another that’s easier to get started on? I like the versatility of using a rifled shotgun to muzzle load I’m just wondering if there’s a difference if you’ve never shot one before.
Dave I love these videos about the shotgun. Forgive me for asking but do any of those safety concerns about the frame pertain to the Stevens 301 ( which I ALSO love!) AS FAR AS YOU KNOW (added that as a "cover your ass")?
Dave, any idea where to source the 209 tool kit. I didn't see it available any longer on the SLA site. Also where did you get your bag mold? I know of a few places, but curious about possible additional vendor sources.
Would like to see an accuracy test between the two types of balls from the rifled barrel. I don't think there will be any advantage to the chewed ball from a rifled barrel. The chewed ball concept would be better in a smooth bore. Prove me wrong!
Sorry, but I'm ignorant. You can use a rifled barrel shotgun for muzzleloading and normal slugs, and then use a smooth bore for shot use? Also, any suggestions on other single shot shotguns? I can't seem to find any H&R around here
Of course different guns like different loads, but With my guns I can't tell any difference in accuracy with chewed or round ball. Distance it may show up, haven't tested that
