I would think that owning an older car in the UK would be very expensive, due to the strict standards that the MOT requires. Here in the US, not every state requires an inspection, but even the ones that do aren't nearly as exhaustive as an MOT one. No inspections in my state....the only state-required expenses are a once a year registration sticker for $40 and insurance.
It is very expensive to own older cars here, that's why the UK had a very high turnover of cars, often the cost to pass the test outweighs the value of the car.
Very comprehensive tips for ensuring you pass your MoT, a few misses but still very useful. I will embed this video on my website to help my visitors :-). Thanks
and bushings. they live your fail you on bushings . also that dash lights come on and off. battery needs to be secure and your air filter. they will fail you for anything so you pay for a retest. keeps them in a job ..
I drive a Volvo and I have new tyers new brakes and discs I have to go back to get my emissions can you suggest a cleaning product to put in with the that will enhance my chances how much diesel should I have in the the car when I put the product and bring it for a drive, only have 2days hope you can help
In Africa yes...in UK we have MOT to check cars and humps to stop or eliminate speedy gonzales idiots...are you with me? oh forgot to say and mention that UK MOT legislation is very gently compared with TUV report in Germany..adios muchachos
I always change my oil before an MOT,I am told this reduces the "Hydro carbons" and I also add a bottle of "cataclean" to the petrol tank when a quarter full and drive the car for at least 20 miles. I have never failed an immisions test yet.
If a car has advisories in January 2019 mot and then a car sales place sells the car a year later and puts a 'new Mot with no advisorys' on it in Jan 2020.. You purchase the car but put it through a check immediately and the exact same advisorys are on it from 2019.. Has the car sales place been fraudulent with their mot?
Yep so I fail the MOT because one of my number plate lights wasnt working and yet my uncle drives a land rover thats more than 40 years old and he can legally drive around with oil pissing out everywhere and kicking out all kings of emmisions because its exempt from the MOT laws, who the fuck comes up with these things ffs lmao
I always thought the spare wasn't a part of the test unless installed? Also many cars dont have a spare these days so that part has to be now defunct?... Always prep my car before M.o.t. Make it look loved lol... I'd hate to be a tester these days, so confusing.
+Rax Raccoon I couldn't agree more. Sure there's nothing worse than being stuck at the roadside with a flat that won't inflate with the 'gunk' that's deemed acceptable by some manufacturers, trying to pinch a few quid and mpg figures by not having the full sized spare.
When checking lights obviously check the side and rear indicators which wasn’t obvious on this video but also make sure your *registration bulbs are both working!* Thats a fail as well.
I went to national tyre and exaust centre for a free brake check, they said rear brakes were shot and needed replaced (shoes and drums) .... today my car passed it's MOT .... took the car to kwik-fit 1 hr later and guy said breaks were knackered....how the hell did it pass.... dodgy breaks and no number plate bulb. Took the car back to MOT test station and showed them the brake report and brakes were done free of charge.
Thanks for these clear concise tips. I'm doing my first mot ever on a e46 coupe is a 53 and has a few issues. The main thing is the inner door seals are lose and come off on the passenger side, is this a fail? also as the car is low so whenever I park the bumper catches the raised curbs in supermarkets and what not. One side of the bumper is hanging lose it has a fog light which works will I fail on that?
In Ireland the tester checks that the lights that should come on with the ignition actually do ie the MIL of Airbag light should light up and go out when the car is started. If the light doesn't come on at all its a fail.
I REALLY need to sort my mot out lmao it expired in Oct 2018 but I put a years worth on tax on it 1 day before MOT expiry and I've managed get to August 2019 but I want to get it out the way. Does MOT flag up when you go past a police car because I've been past 20 or so police cars in that long period and been followed by atleast 8 of those but not stopped. Feels like my MOT has lasted 1 year 11 months because as long as your taxed and insured you don't seem to get pulled over😂
Video says that cross-ply on the front and radials on the rear are ok, I don't believe this is the case. Back in the 70s when mixing was common, the rule was that you couldn't mix radial and cross-ply on the same axle and if you were going to have a mix on the car, it had to be radials up front and cross-ply on the rear.
Rear fog light "if your car has them"??? the presenter said. If it doesn't have at least one properly working rear fog light on the driver's side, it would be an instant fail.
+Pearse f75 I agree. They won't fail you. But anyone driving around on 8+ year old tyres is asking for trouble. (old rubber could blowout). One old lady I know was driving her little Vauxhall Nova on 22year old tyres!! She only did 500miles a year, but her tyres still passed the MOT. Amazing.
Great and sound advice. I forgot to remove the tyre protectors so it was seen as a failure before I started. I was in a rush and forgot. So you are so right to remind us to tidy up and read what is required. Many thank JD.
going to check a car im looking to buy and its MOT is coming to an end and I wanted to find a video to help me look for signs of damage a bit better, this helped a lot. thanks.
