Hi my friends !
In this video, I compared all my preamps with 2 different mics (Shure SM57 and Microphone-parts.com T47 DIY kit)
What many want to know is if an external preamp even the cheapest is better than those included in an interface. And how will they compare to highend preamps.

The preamps are
Behringer MIC100
Focusrite ISA
Universal Audio LA-610
Universal Audio 4-710
Focusrite 8i6 mk1 onboard preamp
RME Fireface UFX mk1 onboard preamp
Interfaces with good preamps :
RME, Focusrite Scarlett gen3, Audient, Anteloppe, UA etc..
Affordable Preamp suggestion (better than the MIC100) :

Wonderful video! Thanks for doing this. However, I found the stock tube was noisy in my Behringer MIC100 so back when I first bought it, I put a vintage RCA made in USA tube in and it's been nice and quiet for me. Also when testing sweeps and pink noise I am not seeing any loss of high frequencies at all. I do see a very small drop on the low end at 20hz though - so small I don't hear it and nothing I record goes that low - but my test equipment shows the small dip. I'm pretty surprised at how well it works for such an inexpensive preamp.

I think the noise with the SM-57 is basically electromagnetic interspersion into the mic's coil. I've used some SM-57 near a tramway line and they picked up surprisingly much of the electromagnetic noise. However, thank you for the great review!

Dynamic mics like the SM-57 are requiring a lot more gain to get good recording levels. Some preamps will produce more noise when pushed. For exemple, my old Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56 had honest preamps. But when the gain was set higher than 75% (what ever the mic) it would give a lot of noise. Did you listen to part 2 ? the audio was exported again with cleaner sound.. Part one did not work well with youtube's algorithm.. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GDzOrR9r-f0.html

Ive got a sm57 to mic my cabinet for electric guitar, got a old line6xt live I can use as an interface, of course signal for mic is too low. Im between buying a budget pre amp to solve this, or would you recommend to buy a new interface like a focusrite 2i2?

Focusrite interface while not being the best are very honest quality for the price. The dynamic mic (sm57) needs a lot of gain to get healthy and clean signal. If your source is loud, you won't have any problem.. If you can't push the power on your amp and cabinet.. that might be treaky. Usually those small interface will sound good if you can keep the gain below 70% of the available gain. More then that, they will work but give a lot of noises.. All in all, for micing a guitar amp.. you should be fine with any focusrite or presonus entry level interfaces.. If you could up the game to a audient interace.. humm those are in another category ! ;)

HI marco primeau, currently i have the mbox pro 3 (3rd gen) and I think its quiet old. Should I buy a new interface like SSL 2 or audient id4? is there any different that I can get from this new kind of interface? Tq for suggestion

There is nothing wrong about using the mbox pro 3. If it does what you need. Of course with the SSL and Audient, you get higher quality preamps inspired from their respective big mixers. They are very good interfaces. Althought I would aim for the ID14 instead of ID4. To have 2 preamps but also for the optical input which gives you a bit of flexibility for the future (if outboard preamps comes of interest to you) the optical input can be 1 x ADAT/ or /SDPIF

@@esmaezhar Assuming the line-ins inputs are direct path to the converters, I'm sure you will get a good sound. What you shouldn't do is connect it to the preamps because they will color the sound comming from the mpa. The MPA is a very good quality unit for the price. But in the end only you can tell if the sound quality is different enough from the onboard preamp of your interface.. Let me know after you've tested it throughly ! ;)

This video is unfortunately not usable for any fair comparison due to the really weird things going on to the audio during the test. Really appreciate the effort and all the work going in to making a video like this though.

Assuming your cable and the mic is in good shape, this isn't very surprising, if you push the gain and output pass 60%, noises starts to be heard on mine too. A sm 57 output isn't very loud, could be 15-20db less than most condensers. They tried to hide the noise by lowering the high frequency response but at some point it doesn't lie. . . I use it only for my talkback mic, but if I had to use it otherwise it would be only on loud sources... That's why I love the focusite ISA, 80db of clean gain opens a world of possibilities (of course 400$-500$ is a lot more than the 60$ MIC100, but worth every penny in my opinion) ;)

I'm stuck with cheap BM100 XLR mic and TU-04 mixer, but it's hard to get it loud without hiss - if I'm 40mm from the mic it's ok -. I want to upgrade the TU-04, but from the reviews it seams like all the Behringer's also hiss with too much gain. I might just live with what I have. Thanks.

@@SidneyCritic I guess the mic is your weakest point then the mixer then the mic100. If you could get a hold on a proper mic and audio interface, that would simplify your life by 1000x. I feel for you.. Hope you can get better gear soon. or borrow.. In the mean time concentrate on what you can control, your creativity and your recording knowledge.. ;)

Salut marco . Je me suis acheter un sm57 pour faire de voice over, vocal pour publicité etc . As tu un preamp de vocal en tete qui fitterais bien avec un sm57 et pop filter. Justilise un tascam us16x08. Merci et bonjour de Sherbrooke, Quebec

Le focusrite ISA one est le meilleur à prix abordable.. Comme les micros dynamique un une sorti plus faible en niveau, le ISA est parfait puisqu'il offre 80db de gain et ce sans bruit !! J'en ai 8 en format rackmount, ils sont exceptionnel et très solide, difficile à faire distortionner.. ;)

Can i use this for my guitar? My audio interface always clipping even with 0 gain knob. I think my pickups are too hot. I need to reduce the gain signal.. i have no idea lol

Humm?? maybe your gain knob is not working when you plug an instrument. Is there a realtime mixer software included with your interface, or maybe a setting in the drivers for instrument gain ?? Nonetheless, if it's not working well after you investigate gain sources, I'd look for a Di before a preamp. A good Di from Radial would be a good choice.

@@ChrisKadaver I admit on a small screen we can't read it but every tracks are named after the preamp used. Here is the order from the top track : Behringer, ISA, UA710, UA610, RME, Scarlett 8i6. Then 8i6, RME, 710, ISA, 610, Behringer. Hope it helps..

Anything is ok if you don't have better alternatives. At least get a proper audio interface Presonus, focusrite or audient 1 or 2 channel. Then compare the sound of the included preamp to this external one (connected to the line-in) there is no point of investing if you don't hear and value the difference ;)

I don't have a gen3 but a gen1. What you immediatly hear is that the MIC100 has less high frequencies. kinda if they wanted to hide noises.. But it's working fine non the less. Where they will both fail is when the source and/or the mic isn't loud enough and you have to push the gain pass 60% (which is the sweet spot) at 75% and more I feel there is too much noise for getting a clean recording.. Of course it depends on your need, I'm kinda of alergic to noise.. ;) I might do one more video about preamps in a near future, I'll remember to make this comparaison.. thanks

I HV been using Behringer tube500 for almost 5 years, works perfectly. Last month I bought Volt from Universal audio because of good reviews. I returned it 2 days later. Behringer works. Any adjustments you might need to do, use EQ and whatever plugins you have.

It might work, but 16bit/48khz is a deal breaker for me... Headroom on 16bit is very poor, like in this video, with loud sources it might be ok.. but the noise floor would be bad if you record a faint instrument like finger style clasical guitar. Last time I recorded at 16bit was in 2002...

I don't mind to buy that one..well it's good enough for I guess .for $30 and you'll get a huge sound and tube kind of sound..crispy and little bit drive ..it's sound's ok for me.. Maybe I'll use it for rock vocal or I might use it for master bus preamp ..so i can get more drive for my mixing ..it will be fun ..sometime we need rough kind of sound to mix you know..I've learned it from Sylvia massy perhaps.you guy's need to see her video ..she's good. Really good

Anything that you want to sound clear and airy, it won't work. But for a screaming vocal, Yes that would be a nice choice (with a sm57) let's say. For master buss, not sure. I feel it would color the mix too much and darken it... But it's all about experimenting, let me know how it turns out for you !

I did have some Maudio then Focusrite interfaces, RME is on another level.. Nothing like TotalmixFX from other makers.. but of course Audient and Antelope are very good with UA too.. ;)

Conclusion : BEHRINGER is too bassy -- no clarity - SM57 into interface is best

Yes if you have a fairly recent interface, I'd use its preamps instead of buying this one.. I think the only worth it low price preamp available is the ART.. Then it goes to highend with the ISA and others.. ;)
