Very helpful video. Viewers might benefit from being sure to never start the generator, and never shut it down, with any load on it. I know it is in the instructions, but easy to forget. Not doing so can lessen the strength of and the form (sinusoidal) of the AC electrical output a little more each time it happens.

I have the previous version (Predator 8750) and it's been rock solid. The run time is around 11-hours. The only time mine has ever loaded up is when my pool pump timer unexpectedly kicked on. If memory serves, they did suggest running a couple of gallons of fuel through it to break the engine in before putting it to work. My only minor issue is the fuel lines were of poor quality and they started to dry up and crack (easy fix).

I've had my predator 4000 watt for about 10 years now. We live in the Carolinas but when power goes out it has no trouble running the essentials. I do run STABIL in my gas year round, also start it once a month and let it run and power something for about 15-20 minutes. Change the oil once a year, blow the air filter out and brush the spark plug with some gum out & a old tooth brush starts first pull every time. I also store in in my garage, great product. FLY NAVY!!!

I'm in South Carolina and have a Champion 5500 Running Watt Generator. Bought in 2018 just before hurricane Florence. Ran for 36 hours straight, although I to refuel it 2 or 3 times. It also ran during Tropical Storm Idalia for about 6 hours, and during a scheduled power outage 2 years ago to change the pole transformer. 20 minutes once a month on the first according to the maintenance schedule.It's due for an oil change this Summer. GO AIR FORCE!

I've read some pretty good reviews about Champion's. Like all portable generators they are worth their weight in gold when the power goes out. Longest non stop run on mine has been 22 hours. BTW my father was Air Force Korea. FLY NAVY!!!@@GeoffryWK

I've got one of their older Chicago Electric models. I've had it 15 years. Still runs great. Run them 4 times a year on a light load and you should never have any issues.

⚠️Please don’t forget to follow the generator safety tips whenever you use your portable generator. This is a very important announcement for everyone. This is just a reminder for everyone’s safety. All generator safety rules need to be followed carefully Generator safety tips: 1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Children often get curious about anything so we should keep an eye on them to also make sure they’re not wandering towards the generator. 2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I1jT3ANENvI.html and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators. When using a portable gas powered generator to power your home, make sure the neutral on the generator is floating. Which just means the neutral and ground on the generator are not connected. It’s also good practice to drive a proper ground rod into the ground and connect a wire from it to the external ground terminal on the generator. When using a generator as a stand alone unit like for tools or lights with them just plugged straight into the generator, the neutral and ground on the generator should be bonded (connected) to each other.

I also had to replace the carburetor so just make sure not to let gas sit in the carb or it will gum up. Just a thought..be sure to check the output on each breaker turned on when running a large load. Just because it’s running a pump or turning on a light doesn’t mean it’s putting out the full 120/240. Not having full voltage will burn up pumps, appliances, tools, etc..

How do you check?
@Sharkysharky2323
@Sharkysharky2323 8 месяцев назад
@@spikey9azn6 you’ll want to use a meter. For example say it’s a microwave you’re wanting to use…once your generator is running and supplying power to your panel, turn the breaker on and start the microwave. Then take your meter and put one lead on the neutral bar and the other lead on the load side of the breaker (where the wire is connected to the breaker) with the appliance running you will want to see 120v on the meter. This shows the amount of power being supplied. (A lot of things only require 115v minimum and 125v max, 120v is just common language.) For a 240v or double pole breaker you will want to repeat this on both wires connected to the breaker, one at a time. Each load wire should say 120v. 120+120 on each wire gives you the 240v total. If you get the correct voltage you are looking for you can start to turn on more breakers and put a load on them (for example leave the microwave running and turn on a breaker that controls some lights and plugs) and repeat the process one breaker at a time. Once your meter reads less than 115-120 or 230-240 you know you’ve found your limit. You can do this and play with what you can or can’t have on at the same time. You might have to turn lights off to run the microwave or make sure everything is turned off to run the dryer etc. Keep in mind you don’t have to turn the breaker off to stop the load. Just turn off the microwave, turn off the lights, unplug the space heater etc. to stop the load. It’s a good process to go through ahead of time and it’s a good idea to make notes for yourself so that when the power goes out and it’s time for the generator it’s a stress free process to fire it up and know what you can and can’t do.
@Sharkysharky2323
@Sharkysharky2323 8 месяцев назад
@@spikey9azn6 I’m not the best at explaining things through text but I’m sure there’s some videos that will walk you through the process better than I can. Also just a disclaimer, working in a hot panel is dangerous. My advice is to call an electrician and pay them for an hour of their time to help you get set up and prepared. Edit..please always make sure the first thing you do is turn off the main breaker in your panel. If you don’t you will send power back through the lines. This is very dangerous to people working on the power lines.

Hello, Thank you for this great video 👍, if you don't mind i would have few questions about the predator 9000 (that's our first generator) we have a son with health issues that requires a generator in case of hurricane to power his equipment and the appartement for AC etc ( we are in Florida ), we live in on the first floor, the connection to the board has already been done by an electrician, we just have to attach it to a three if necessary. On the generator it says to run every 3 months for 15/20 min, is it mandatory? We live in a community and if not really necessary, that would avoid too much noise for the neighbors...? Is it rain proof or does it needs additional special cover when outside? On the generator it's written to use appropriate line conditioner for TV, phones etc...we have the extension to connect the generator to the plug specially installed, is it this ?or do we need anything additional? Is connection to ground mandatory ? Thank you in advance for your time

Great question s too badd he didn't bother to answer
@jeffmccrea9347
@jeffmccrea9347 3 года назад
Yes, the generator didn't stall and the lights stayed on but the important question that you didn't answer is what was the actual voltage at your heaviest loads like the pump, hot water ect? if that generator lugs down and stays that way with the governor at full throttle but the engine running below optimum speed, not only will the low voltage condition possibly damage sensitive electronics but the LOW FREQUENCY condition damage pump, well pump and refrigerator motors. AC induction motors are extremely dependent of the 60 Hz frequency of the power. Most of our home appliances run on 120 VAC. Some things like electric stoves, hot water heaters and central air units run on 240 VAC but ALL run at 60 Hz or what used to be called 60 cycles. This means that the power alternates between 60 volts positive and 60 volts negative, 60 times a second or 120 volts positive and negative, 60 times a second. Think of tying a rope to a tree and swinging it up and down 60 times a second. When the rope crests high, this equates to 60 ot 120 volts positive and when it crests low, 60 or 120 volts negative. In the case of your house, if the wife is taking a long hot shower, she's running the well pump, water heater and recirculating pumps all at once. Probably half of your generator's running capacity right there. Now the kids are running the microwave. That 1100 watt microwave? 1800 watts. You don't get something for nothing. The other kids are playing video games on the big screen, 600 watts easy. with that generator under maximum or near maximum load, the governor can only open the throttle plate all the way to try to bring up the engine speed and no more. If that engine stays lugged down for an extended period of time, the voltage and frequency of your power, the 120 volts at 60 cycles, will fall below this limit. If it drops to114 volts at 58 cycles or if the generator develops a minor vacuum leak and speeds up to output 123 volts at 62 cycles, you'd never notice the difference and your equipment won't suffer but if you get down under 115 volts and 55 cycles, things will eventually overheat and possibly be damaged. Purely resistive loads like electric heating units, stoves, filament light bulbs, space heaters, hot water tanks without electronic controls will be fine albeit operating at reduced efficiency. It's mainly motors and sensitive electronics that you have to worry about. A good example of problems is in Europe and Australia, they run 240 VAC like we run 120 VAC but at 50 CYCLES. if someone emigrates from Europe and brings filament type light bulbs and a space heater with them, they could have their house wired to accommodate these with no problem. If they also brought a refrigerator and had it wired up, It would be destroyed in days or weeks. Resistive loads can be run on any frequency from DC to 400 cycles on a world war two bomber. the European motor coils are wound to operate at 50 cycles. While our 240 VAC is just right, our 60 cycle frequency is not and will destroy it in short order. Just like if you moved to Britain and took your well pump with you. Their 240 VAC is fine but at 50 cycles, your well pump will overheat and eventually burn out because it's windings aren't wound for that frequency. My advice is to go to Walmart's electrical section and pick up a cheap digital multimeter and learn how to use it to keep an eye on your load voltages under different conditions with your generator. Honestly, I wouldn't go to Harbor Freight. I have one of their meters and it isn't very accurate. I hope this helps you and anyone else who reads this

You bring up some very good points. I can tell you from personal experience, if you use a manual transfer switch to manage the loads, you will not max out the generator. We have the same generator that I installed a Tri-fuel kit, so NG is our primary fuel. We have a 10 and 6 circuit manual transfer switch with watts meters. I've tested the volts/frequency at 5800 watts on gasoline. The volts range from 119 thru 124 and frequency 59.76 thru 60.44 hertz. (The distance of the outlets, from the power source, effects the volts) On NG at 5200 watts, the volts range from 119.8 thru 122.5 and the frequency 61.64 to 62.49.
@jeffmccrea9347

@@Pk3_Garage I believe what you say but I can't imagine for the life of me why your frequency readings go up on NG. These TroyBilt generators, at least mine which is 9 years old, are frequency regulated strictly by governed engine speed. One or two Hz either way isn't important but I'm still confused. Speaking for mine, if the engine is lugged down below the maximum governor limit, the frequency goes down as well. I was told by a small engine mechanic with decades of experience that when you run a gas engine on LPG or NG, you lose 20% of it's rated output due to horsepower loss from less dense fuel, (fewer BTU's per equivalent unit). I understand why your power capacity dropped but am baffled as to the upswing in your frequency unless yours is a newer model with electronic frequency regulation. On a different note. I keep mine in my detached garage which explains why it still looks new. It has a nested spot by the side walk-in door. I also keep a box fan next to it and plugged into it as the small alcove that it is in does not provide for much fresh air if it is running with the door shut during active precipitation not wanting rain or snow to blow in on the hot engine. The box fan provides ventilation otherwise it tends to choke itself out on it's own exhaust. I also open the big garage door a few inches to provide an exit for the exhaust. My garage is a sheet metal building so it isn't sealed like wood or block. The wind just doesn't blow through it well. My father in law passed recently and the garage is full of his stuff but if my generator starter battery goes dead, I can pop the hood of my car and jump off the generator through the side door. This happened just once when it was 6 years old. I called Lowes and they wanted $99.00 and 10 days to get another battery. TIP: Get on Amazon and search 22 amp hour, 12 volt gel cell batteries. The original battery is an 18 amp hour but I got a 22 amp hour Mighty Max battery made for portable jump starter packs for $44.00 INCLUDING FREE NON PRIME DELIVERY on an 8 pound battery. My father taught me to always over buy when buying a car battery. Normal cranking stresses a larger capacity battery less and when it does begin to wear out, it's a slower process giving you time to replace it before it dies completely. Plus, if in the winter it takes a little longer for it to start, you have the extra capacity to crank a few seconds longer without over taxing the battery. I don't know if it's still free delivery as this was 3 years ago but my new battery hasn't left me in the dust yet, it is the same physical size and slides into the same slot and it still charges with the original wall wart charger that came with the unit. Just be aware when ordering that you get the same flat tab terminals as the original and the battery will slide in like new. Good luck.

We have the Predator 9000/7250 watts generator too. I should have stated in my comment that I made a small adjustment, to the idle screw, when switching to NG. My non-load readings are: Gasoline volts 122.1 at 64.54 thru 65.05 hertz; NG volts 122.0 at 64.76 thru 65.11 hertz.

I hooked it up to my panel box. When the electric came on? It over loaded my generator. So the extension cords is what i used around in my house around the ceiling walls >> This hides the extension cords and keep them off the floors. >> ONE MORE VERY IMPORTANT THING ABOUT A PORTABLE GENERATOR! THEY MUST BE EARTH GROUNDED or it will magnetize the generator and ruin it. They got a place that is marked > EARTH GROUND. That where you run your copper line down into the ground about 1 to 2 foot deep. I just made me a copper rod, by twisting the copper lines to gather, then hook it to the rod > You can get these rod clamps cheap

This generator sounds to loud if heard it on other videos its like a harley davidson. They didn't even try to dampen the sound a little bit. Id even spend another 100 just to not hear it so much. Also I think its bad that you put it in your garage but dont explain about carbon monoxide poisoning. In Texas recently like 20 people died from going into their vehicles to try and stay warm in their garages. Their are a lot of people especially women and younger men who do not know about that.

Yes. I agree with your advice. Generators are outdoor use only. I know a lot about generator safety: there is something that everyone really needs to know about using generators. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. That’s why everyone should be careful. Remember not to run your generator indoors because of carbon monoxide. And also, we should also keep our children safe when we’re using portable generators so children won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator and poisoned by carbon monoxide. Generators can be hot which can burn children or electrocuted them. I know all about the safety and hazards of using generators. Generators should not be operated in wet conditions. Don’t try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet which can cause fire hazards. Only plug a generator cord into a transfer switch. Turn on your generator before Plugging in appliances. Keep your generator 20 feet away from your house. Install a carbon monoxide detector. This is for everyone’s safety. Hope you stay safe as well. Thank you

You didn't do the break-in as instructed by the owner's manual? 03:14 THAT is the norm for this generator...starts on the first pull. Replace the spark plug with NGK. When the plug is out, drop in a teaspoon of engine oil then pull the rope slowly 10x. Use straight 30w dino oil for the break-in. Then use whatever weight non-dino oil that the owner's manual says. Always run this genny with some electrical load. Only run non-ethynol gas. Get the eBay $40 carburetor assembly so you can run gas or propane. Check the voltage and frequency of electrical output and adjust the RPMs as needed. I'm glad that you spent time on the panel interlock. There are soooo many people who skip that part. Be sure to check with your local building inspection department as related to the electrical grounding requirements. There is no standard. You may want to invest in an hour meter and a wattage meter for both legs of your 220V. That way you can be sure your load is reasonably balanced and your maintenance is on schedule. The beauty of a back-feed through the panel is that each circuit is still protected by it own circuit breaker. In a setup like this the 50 amp circuit breaker is just a switch allowing the bus bar to be energized by the generator instead of the utility line.

Use the electric start? Sometimes I use starting fluid ("cheater spray", I like to call it). I don't have the patience to pull and pull and pull like when I was a fit teenager. But really, if an engine is hard to start, I do have the patience to remove the carb and clean it up very well -- that takes care of the real problem. You could also have a bit of water in the carb bowl. Gasoline with ethanol can slowly absorb moisture from the air, and then the water stays with the ethanol and sinks to the bottom of the gas, down to the bottom of the carb bowl. There is a simple screw there for draining the bowl.

Learning from the military its always nice to have back for the back up and to give the suggestion of buying two generators is almost as important as having just one. When you have two generators this will give you greater flexibility to allow you to shut one down and insert the other while performing maintenance, refueling, and just giving each generator a break. It will also give you the power to just run one, if the other is broke down and needs some repairs. And if you want to get really good results and flexibility, then you would have a generator that will provide more watts than needed. Less strain on the generator and more starting power.

I just got home from HarborFreight in Portsmouth where I picked this up, yes, based on the phenomenal reviews it has. I have an older McCulloch that has done fine but, like you, I wanted more assurance of it being able to handle life as close to normal as possible during power outages. I did get the battery because I want my wife to be able to get this going if I’m not home and the pull start proved to be a bit more than I felt comfortable subjecting her to. So, I’ll built a shelter for this, more of making it easier on my wife. Now, I had a fail once on the 5600 I have now...because it obviously gets used most often during rain or snow events and after the event is over, the machine gets stowed away again. Because it gets wet most often during use, the recoil spring had rusted solid! I took it apart and attempted to clean it and the spring snapped into pieces! And yes, that renders it totally inoperable! I did find a knock off recoil and replaced it but, if it had been during a power outage, I’d have been without power. So, since you’re set up with a pull only right now, I’d recommend throughly drying the recoil spring, oil it lightly and, keep some spare recoil rope in hand as it will also suffer from exposure. Thanks for the review...I’m 100% confident now that this will without a doubt, be precisely what I’d hoped for!! New subscriber in NH.

plus your house doesnt pull 100-200a all of the time in fact most homes do not pull 100a at any given time typically 30-50a is normal at one time pending the timing of the day

It really depends on your energy usage. So for example, we use around 5K watts an hrs. in the summer, using our central air. We use around 2.5K watts an hrs. in the winter. So yes, it can for our house. But you do have to be smart about your usage of big loads though. Don't run to many big load items at once.

It's for emergency power. You don't have to run your hair dryer at the same time as your cappuccino machine.

How does this work if you have solar??
@PeterLawton
@PeterLawton Год назад
Your question is much too broad to answer. It raises other questions like, "does the home connect to grid + solar + generator?", "is the home only using solar now?" , "is the intention to use solar AND generator at the same time, or either solar OR generator at any given time, but never both at once?" Many other questions could follow.

What size is the fuel tank? Harbor Freight's website only states "New larger tank".

Generator safety ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I1jT3ANENvI.html keep in mind that carbon monoxide fumes are not safe and generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Hope you all stay safe. Thank you

According to the Maintenance Schedule, each year or 300 hours of operation, we are supposed to check/adjust the Valve Clearance. What the stink is that all about. I’m supposed be a Mechanical no it all. What am I supposed to do? Pull the engine and field strip it. Nuts. I’m sorry I bought this finicky trash.
@harryazzole7814
@harryazzole7814 3 года назад
You literally take a feeler gauge and adjust the valve clearance. You have to do this with any generator no matter what engine powers it.

What size breaker did you use for the secondary generator power supply?

You should use the same as your generator supply

Looks like a really tiny house...hardly anything in that panel. Also that looked like a gas boiler not electric so it won't use any power at all hardly...our water heater is 4800 watts, downstairs furnace is 15kW, upstairs 10kW...and I haven't got to the kitchen or laundry stuff yet. Even my parents house a 17kW standby generator can't run everything at once and requires load-shed on the larger appliances like 2nd stage furnace/heat pump defrost, hot water heater, stove, clothes dryer, etc.

Home furnace and water heater that are fueled directly using gas/oil/wood are much more efficent then heating electricly from gasoline. This type of mobile generator shuldn't be used with load that excedes ~70% of max nominal power for long period of time, so forget about high demand aplianaces... As well fridges, HVAC and other compressor based units due to requirement of smooth sinus from AC, works very uneficently on generators. (not mentioning the current spikes that are require when starting - high potential of failure, if generator is overloaded already)

Did you even watch the video? He said it was a gas boiler. He also said it was 150 amp service and his panel is approximately 3/4 full so I don't get what you're saying.
