Dan I also use to fish with tanks usually in depths over 150 ft. Now I am 75 and quit diving. I enjoy your videos very much brings back great memories. Also had a bends because used 2 tanks in a row and left the 3rd for decompression at 150 ft. The thing was 3rd tank was empty. A tip dont spend so much time stuck in bottom just kill and go 25 or 30 ft up were you will have more visibility and less nitrogen in your blood.
EDC, thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! That's an interesting story about your bends hit, hopefully it wasn't too bad! Good tip, I def try and stay up as high as possible, every foot counts! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Best, Dan
I've gotten this day tattooed on me, the day that Dan missed a shot. Thanks for making the rest of us look bad for years. Great recovery on your cursed spot.
Mr Spicy, lordy I needed that laugh. Thanks for that! "Cursed spot", I like that too! I was already half paranoid diving there and now it'll be even worse. Lol. Thank Spicy! Best, Dan
I just stumbled upon your channel Dan and love it. I first heard of you on Spearboard years ago when you were the buzz on there after shooting that huge Warsaw off a wreck in 400+' ...unbelievable stuff! Do not change a thing with your videos. I think they're perfectly edited, IMHO. Also, love the tips you throw in there every so often. PLEASE keep them coming brother.
Hey Henry, thanks! Really glad you're liking the videos! I will def keep the videos coming! We've had two Hurricanes and a TS in the GOM during the last month and it's played heck with the offshore conditions. Hopefully we'll catch a break soon and I'll post some new stuff up! Appreciate your words! Best, Dan
BT, I was hoping you'd see the deck footage. LOl. Glad you liked it. I'm planning on doing that with all future videos. Thanks for your comments and for watching. Best, Dan
Fantastic video as always, but you gave us extra bonus the view of your buddy, on the way to the surface. Solo dive with air to 200' was always dangerous for me,but when l had a buddy diving with me ,it was a walk in the park... Thanks Dan,you are simply the BEST!!!
Awesome vid!!! You definitely had to work for that one though. No smooth dives for you on this one. Thanks for sharing. Your videos are helping us Spearos thru this lockdown/pandemic. Be safe out there. Keep the vids coming
Ok, this answered one of my questions. “Do you guys have a rod over the boat as you dive”?. And I see you do.. hahaha .. that’s awesome. Great vid ..!!! The Goliath with your fish was insane.!
MF5, thanks and so did I. Originally, I never planned to release any of these videos and just cut the Camera off before boarding. I'll def do deck footage on all future videos. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Hey Tommy, yeah, steady as she goes is a good plan while spearing...getting fired up, excited and jerky usually means bad results. Including diminished catch and the increased possibility of a CO2 headache (also known as a crusher in the dive community). Best, Dan
ELH, I still don't know how I missed that fish. Wasn't a difficult shot at all. That spot has always been tough on me! Lol. Thanks for your comments! Best, Dan
Hey Dan thanks as always for these amazing videos I love watching u shot these fish, but quick question that fish that normally try to eat the others u shoot can't this fish be eaten? An what it name ? And if yes why dont u shoot it
If you don’t mind me asking, is your single band the same piece of rubber on the bottom of your gun? Just trying to figure out how to run a single band effectively to keep a good punch for bigger gags.
Nice haul! This video is definitely not for PETA members, LOL. I guess pushing that rod through both eyes makes the fish like McMurphy in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"?
awesome as always.... hey man dont know what model gopro you have but if its fairly new you can enable your protune setting .. theres a few settings in there that you can set to keep your go pro from switching from blue to green like that. mine did the same thing but i have it dialed in over the past 5 or 6 weeks and have the settings for the most natural realistic look. as close to what im actually seeing down there as possible. if your intersted i can give you the settings to try out and see how you like just let me know. mines a hero 7 black
@@danmacmahon3973 turn on pro tune... SHUTTER : auto / EV COMP : negative 1.5 / WHITE BALANCE : 4500K / ISO MIN : 100 / ISO MAX :1600 / SHARPNESS : medium / COLOR : GoPro these will get you damn close to as natural as possible. or at least it does on my hero 7 should be close. if your camera pic is good but too light or dark change the EV comp .... go to negative 1 or negative 0.5 to let more light in for deeper dives. BUT the general settings i gave above have worked great and as close to what im actually seeing while diving. setting hope it works out lemme know the 4500k locks the go pro in and doesnt let it jump back and forth between colors so you can play with that slightly if needed too.
TE, it's a homemade gun we make ourselves. Roughly based on an older Sea Hornet but utilizing better quality parts. The spears are 7.5mm diameter and 60" long. In a nut shell, free shafting is much faster than line shafting. No method is best every time, but free shafting usually works better for us. Best, Dan
Alan, I know it...lol.....I'm not superstitious but I'm changing the name of the spot in my plotter, we'll see how that works out next Spring! Best, Dan
Thanks David, yeah I think they could easily do a small open on them, maybe a lottery drawing or something, strictly rec, no commercial. I'd love to go with some rec guys and help out taking one! Best, Dan
Goliaths are just too damn lazy to work for a meal! Glad he spit your fish out as that would have been heartbreaking to lose a fish to them! First time I have seen a crew member with a rod onboard, Do they always fish while you are down? Guess I will have to subscribe as you now have me hooked! Great video and keep them coming! You are an awesome Harvester of the Ocean, a Fish Farmer if you will! LOL
Thanks MH, they are def an opportunistic feeder. My own fault for giving him the chance. We usually don't fish while diving but occasionally will if it's a large spot and we can safely keep the hook away from the divers. Best, Dan
He makes his own spear guns . Following the design of the old Sea Hornet but with better quality parts , and tighter tolerances . He weights the bottom of the gun so it almost stands up in the water when empty , and makes his own holders for the Powerheads .
DS, I def agree with that. It's not one little thing that gets ya, it's 3-4 little things that add up to a big thing that get ya! Appreciate your comments and you watching! Best, Dan
Depends on your setup...gun muzzle length, spear length and weight, band qty and length and thickness, etc, plus are you freeshafting, float line, or reel? Make some targets out of something like soda (or water) bottles, and anchor them at different distances from a set shooting position. You’ll quickly figure out how far your setup will shoot accurately. If I’m using clear plastic bottles, I put some toilet paper in them so I can see them at a distance (it biodegrades very quickly if it gets into the water). I also do this if I make changes, such as going from 2 bands to 1 thicker one or changing rubber diameter, etc.
N46820, interesting thought. I guess after dealing with them for almost 50 years, I might not react the way someone new to the sport would. I have a very healthy respect for them and never take one for granted. Best, Dan
His boat on a trailer but he can put in anywhere off the west coast of Florida . His Commercial license is for Fishing in the Gulf of Mexico , and most always he goes at least 75 miles off-shore .
Lazy pain in ass goliaths. That looked like me diving for a minute. Got one, yes. Reload, miss. Where did my first fish and shaft go. Ah shit. Goliath has my spear again. Dammit. You are a spearing God. Thanks for all the epic videos boss.
Doyle, "Orange Rubbers", listen ya'll gotta stop, I can't laugh any more, sides hurting now! Seriously, glad you liked the video and thanks for the laughter! Best, Dan
Hey BA, it's a home made gun we make ourselves. Roughly based on an older Sea Hornet but utilizes better quality parts with tighter tolerances. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Hey James, we've never sold one but I'm talking to a well known gun Manufacturer about the possibility of producing a few. If it works out, they'll def be available with all the good stuff. Best, Dan
Why waste two bullets on one fish 🐟???? It's great to see you enjoying your passion but I'm curious about your way to pick and choose but there's heaps of fish around you.
look how the red color of those speargun rubber bands are reflecting & easy to see ...what if you use a some sort of a tape or paint & make a band at the end of the spear ..so you can see & easy to find...just an idea
Sam, that's an interesting idea. Like painting or staining the last few inches of the stock Orange. I might give that a whirl and see how it goes. Best, Dan
Justin, it's a home made gun we make ourselves. Roughly based on an older Sea Hornet but utilizing better quality parts and tighter tolerances. Best, Dan
At 1:57 I saw the most shocking thing that I have ever seen on your channel, wow! You actually missed a fish?? I never thought that I would see something like this from you Dan.
Hey PW, well...the spear had to be bent, the sun was in my eyes, the fish zigged when it should have zagged, I actually killed the fish, it's the camera that recorded it wrong...lol. None of those are true, I just flat out missed it! Thanks for your comment, I enjoyed it! Best, Dan
Good stuff Dan as always. I agree with the deck shot and talk. But, what I would really appreciate is some closed captioning when you are mumbling underwater. I only want the closed captioning because I want to start running a bet line on how many letters compared to characters it would include. #$%&@! thing. Still got dibs on interviewing the gloves when they are retired. Good to see you growing, and I know it's a pain editing and posting, but lots of people appreciate it.
Thanks Oscar, I appreciate your comments. That CC stuff when I'm "mumbling" under water might need to be edited a little ! I've enjoyed posting and editing the videos, been a lot of fun! Thanks for watching! Best, Dan
Hey Kemal, we do wear suits in the colder months. This time of year, the waters so warm in our area that they aren't required. I do know a couple of guys who wear them for abrasion protection though. We'll be back into them in 8-9 weeks! Yeah the Crew has been working together for 15-20 years and do a great job! Best, Dan
Dan, I know Goliats are protected, When a kid my dad shot a 200 Pds, and recall runing to neighbors and giving away 20 lbs chunks of fish. I shot a 300 lbs when 15 but lost it because it cut the nylon braid with rocks. Are they good to eat ? Now there are so may they bug us all. Hope they go of the protected list
Hey WK, the smaller ones are delicious. When they were legal, I disliked the meat off the larger ones due to the fatty layers throughout the fish. Although some of my buddies really liked the larger ones meat. To each his own I guess. They may open them up for a limited take again one day but I'm not holding my breath! Best, Dan
Protected - No take since 1990, so you can’t harvest them. Edible is another argument, since studies conflict about Ciguatera levels (poisoning from toxins, typically from dinoflagellates or microalgae). I know people who have been hospitalized from it, with neurological issues lasting nearly a year...personally, I don’t shoot or eat reef fish bigger than my arm to avoid getting Cig because of the bio-accumulation risk.
Quisiera verte pescando a 120 pies a pulmon. Todas las personas tienen una idea diferente de lo que es divertido o no. Que bueno que no tienes mas comentarios. The spearfishing is legal in many parts of the world.
RV, well, they're bright Orange on the Surface but they sure are Pink down there. Gawd, if the crew notices that, I'll never hear the end of it! Thanks for pointing that out Richard! Best, Dan
