Predator is a 1987 American science fiction action film directed by John McTiernan and written by brothers Jim and John Thomas. It is the first installment in the Predator franchise. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of an elite paramilitary rescue team on a mission to save hostages in guerrilla-held territory in a Central American rainforest, who encounter the deadly Predator (Kevin Peter Hall), a technologically advanced alien who stalks and hunts them down.

Fun fact: The predator's iconic clicking sound was done by voice actor Peter Cullen, aka Optimus Prime in Transformers, inspired by the sound of the wriggling legs of an overturned Horseshoe-crab he saw as a kid. As for the design: it was originally Jean Claude van Damme in a crustacean-like costume, but it translated very poorly to film, so Arnold suggested contacting Stan Winston with whom he had previously collaborated with for the Terminator. Winston drew sketches on the flight to the set, adding the dreadlocks. James Cameron, seated next to Winston, suggested adding mandibles as a final touch 👌🏼 The Predator himself was played by 7ft tall actor Kevin Peter Hall, best known as the bigfoot Harry in Harry & the Hendersons, who also gets a out-of-costume cameo as the helicopter pilot at the end of the film.

From what I hear, it's a little more than just a costume that translated poorly. There's a rumor that they were asking Van Damme to do stunts (while wearing leg extensions, because he's only 5'10") and he quit because some of those stunts would've broken his legs if even one tiny thing was wrong. How true that is, I don't know.

In the original draft of the story, Dutch was supposed to beat the Predator in the fistfight rather easily. Short of Arnold outright stating, "the mud is masking my body heat", I don't know how else they could have communicated it. I can see it. Man movies use alternative views as a way to help the audience differentiate between characters, for instance scenes only seen in black and white might indicate we are seeing the killer's perspective, or seeing everything in greyscale except for a single piece of clothing in red might indicate we are seeing the movie from a truly neutral perspective, or zooming in of the horror, for instance. We saw this in the Terminator when we witnessed that his point of view was all in red for example. It is a type of movie storytelling technique that does not perfectly translate. It also makes perfect sense if you are seeing this from the perspective of someone not understanding the alien technology + genetics. If the Predator is using heat vision googles, for instance, we might reasonably assume that "it" might not have them on at all times. I, as an active duty soldier do not walk around 24/7 with night vision googles one. And honestly, I would estimate I have them on maybe 0.001% of the time, favorably. Additionally, part of the point of the movie is to demonstrate just how unknown this thing is. A lot of us have the advantage of knowing some of the generic lore now, but if this is the first you have really seen of the . . . universe, it is very understandable.

I will say though that I don’t think the mud would successfully mask that heat signature for very long lol. Plus there is the interesting question of how much is his vision vs the mask, which you don’t know until he takes it off. Even then, it’s sort of confusing. But I really like the contrast. I did think it was pretty obvious that the predator could see movements and vague outlines of shapes as WELL as anything giving off a heat signature. However, I see countless people completely unable to understand seemingly obvious metaphors, themes, and character motivations, often chalking it up to bad storytelling or completely misinterpreting it. I’m just noting this because I rarely see comments by people stunned at someone’s idiocy or whatever when this is the case.

Trivia: The minigun used for this film was modified to have its rate of fire reduced from 3,000 rounds per minute to only around 600, and was loaded with special blank ammunition that had reduced recoil even for a standard blank cartridge. Even with these steps taken to reduce the recoil, it was not possible for any member of the cast to fire it while standing; they had to have a special brace put behind them to anchor them in place and keep them from being knocked over.

The amount of times she said “I’m confused” to things that were completely self explanatory is a prime example on how modern movies have destroyed people’s brains. I've noticed with younger audiences they 'don't get' older movies. Apparently movies today explain everything in detail so there are no questions. No, you had it right. Predator's use of thermal vision allowed him to track everyone down, as well as figure out there was some kind of trap/warning by the amount of time that everyone spent in an area and the way they moved to place the trap/warning. Which is why when Arnold got covered in mud, he became "background noise" and unseen due to the mud being wet/cold and blocking off body temps. When he came back later at night, the mud had hardened, but isolated the body temp making Arnold remain unseen until he went into the water and it washed off. Also, dry shaving... especially when sweaty... isn't really that big of a deal when you maintain a "close shave" like Mac did. It is really only when you grow "whiskers" that dry-shaving can become painful. Keep it close (like Mac did due to his habit of daily shaving) and it becomes extremely easy and painless.

Yes, the Yautja triggered a small scale fusion bomb at the end. Standard procedure for their race to prevent the capture and study of their technology. The mask allows him (most Hunters are male) to see in thermagraphic, along with several others as needed, as their normal vision range is somewhere in the infrared spectrum. There's a ton of lore about the species if you're interested in learning more.

This movie is so unique. Equal parts 80's action and an episode of the twilight zone. None of the sequels were able to capture that since so much of the final result was ad libbed and altered from the original script. The monster was completely redesigned because the director hated the original costume. This forced them to film the scenes with the alien long after other scenes were done. This added to the use of tension and the predator's "stalker vision" scenes in the first two acts instead of action scenes with the actors and the monster together. Arnold himself changed two things in the movie. First was a terribly out of place "romance" between him and the woman. The other was the final battle with the predator. Originally the monster wasn't supposed to be that much stronger than a human when you take away it's technology. Arny was supposed to win the hand to hand fight at the end. But by the time the monster was redesigned into a giant powerhouse the outcome of the fight was changed. Many people think this or that thing would have made the sequels better but the real problem the first movie wasn't really planned so even if you use the same crew for the sequel the results won't automatically be the same.

This movie's story and the hints in it are pretty straight forward - but the creators opted to show images instead of using characters to talk the audience through. There are no secrets in this film - all is made clear by actions, acting, and scenery. Nobody needs to tell the viewer what's going on, as it is deliberately made evident. People nowadays expect a movie to hold hands by explaining every detail with exposition - but in this case, the filmmakers expected the viewer to pay attention. 'Show, don't tell' is a well-known rule in cinema - but it seems to be a lost art, and many people seem to have lost their ability to use common sense to figure stuff out...

Holy shit you are way overthinking this. It can't see him when he's covered in mud. That's all you need to know. It's not that important. What is important is how near perfect this film is. It builds the creature reveal the same way Spielberg built the shark in 'Jaws'. It's not plagued by endless subplots like many modern films *cough Star Wars*. It is endlessly quotable. It relies on very little exposition. It's pacing is perfect. It's casting is perfect and it introduces its characters in a way that immediately makes you understand who these guys are. They're a diverse group of "badasses" who then get butchered (except Arnie). It achieves everything it needs to in just under 2 hours without overdoing it. It has a definite beginning, middle crisis and explosive end, and then it ends exactly when it needs to. If this film was made today, the Predator would still be hanging from the Helicopter as it takes off. We'd also get some stupid "explanation" as to why the Predator hunts humans. We don't need to know. That's what makes it terrifying.
@DocMicrowave
@DocMicrowave 2 года назад
Well aid. Fully agree. And Yeah-No, they could not make Predator today. At least not the way it was. Today's fresh out of film school writers and film makers will feel a burning desire to "fix" and/or modernize the movie to their perceived social and cultural standards. 2018 "The Predator" was the lowest grossing movie in the franchise, loosing a great deal of money. I doubt 2022 "Prey" will do much better.

I realize this is "React" channel, and she's supposed to be hamming it up a bit for the audience. But I've seen her piece together more with less, in other movies. The amount of confusion this film brought out of her is pretty silly. Its a very straightforward concept, excecuted very simply. This is a really good example of why a majority of creatives feel like they need to hold the audiences hand through every scene of a movie or television show. Everything needs to be explained out loud. It's a damn shame. My mother in law is the exact same way, and its super frustrating to watch anything with her. Gotten to the point where the only answer I give to her constant questions, is "Just watch the movie" until she stops asking questions, lol. I guess this is a man's movie because I saw it literally in the theatre when it came out and it totally made sense to me: it's an alien hunter that hunts other apex predators and turns them into trophies. And it has hunting rules too: you don't kill prey that can't harm you (Dutch knows this, hence he disarms the girl). And in the end it revealed itself to Dutch out of respect. It uses heat vision primarily and I immediately understood that - as did the rest of the audience. Hence when Dutch was covered in that mud it masked his heat signature... Etc etc. Seriously I was amazed you didn't get all that. Billy being an native American decided to face the predator head on and make a last stand because he wanted to die honorable instead of being taken out without facing the enemy. This is to this day one of my favorite Arnie movies. Predator 2 with Danny Glover is cool because it even gives more background to the Predator lore. Also great because of Gary Busey and Bill Paxton. Anyway, go see it the ending is great. Then watch Predators with Adrian Brody. But whatever you do don't watch The Predator from 2018. Or AVP2. AVP 1 is kinda ok.

Is it not amazing that in the 20th Century we made better movies than we do now. Now the Storytelling is gone replaced by Messages from one perspective or another. We forgot that Movies was all about escaping into a "New" world where we get to spectate on adventures and human experiences knowing that we will probably never get to experience it. It was a way for us to escape our mundane daily lives to be Entertained. That is gone and we are left with shoving reality of our mundane daily lives right into our face. Why is it wrong just to take a break? I digress, This movie was awesome because even without the modern CGI they were able to create real "Horror" for the fans. I remember watching this when it came out in movie theaters. I remember me and all of my friends sat at the edge of our seats and got fully immersed. Amazing feeling! I hope they start creating and writing movies that will once again amaze us!

Don't know if anyone else says this below or not, but the man at the end flying the chopper was the guy who was under the Predator makeup. His being the pilot was his own cameo so we could see who he was in real life. But in the final hand-to-hand fight with Dutch, the Predator was paying him respect for being a worthy opponent, so now they were going to fight man-on-man. When I first saw this movie years ago, I missed the part where the mother ship drops off the little ship that the Predator lands in, so I didn't know it was an alien until they revealed it much later - which made it better. I had to guess at who it could be.

Idk if you've noticed it but the Predator only kills you if you're armed. Dutch noticed this too when he tells the girl not to take weapons as that's the only reason it didn't kill her as well. During the final fight, he used his thermal to realise that Dutch was actually fighting him without any weapons. So to make it a fair fight, he too removed his equipment and weapons. The Predator have an honour code. Everyone else in the squad was it's prey but Dutch alone was someone he saw as an equal opponent.
