The Predators on Country project is a partnership with Traditional Owners from the Gundungurra and Dharawal Nations, addressing the critical question of predation risk to prey species. Initially focussing on assessing the predation risk to koalas by examining the scats of Native and Introduced predators, the project has evolved beyond expectations and now looks at the predation risk for many threatened species.
By using environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis technology, we've learnt valuable insights in predator-prey interactions in both common and rare species. Unexpectedly, we even identified rare and cryptic species across the landscape.
The project also serves as a powerful means for Traditional Owners to reconnect with Country, share their Traditional Ecological Knowledge with scientists, and contribute to conservation efforts.
