you confused me a few times, you said you were anime only and then referenced the manga... So I assume you mean manga/anime only up to where the anime is?
Your noticing the bit about the ears is super impressive! I didn't notice the notches until much later, after I finished reading the manga actually. I wasn't expecting you to point it out and I'm super impressed!!
I love seeing all your theories from an anime-only viewpoint. I would absolutely watch a "Reacting to my previous theories" video when the anime concludes, would love to hear your thoughts on how accurate/inaccurate your guesses were
love the names you’ve given them all, “elf narc” made me laugh. seeing your thoughts on these characters from what you got is very fun, can’t wait for season 2 so you can get to know them :)
LMAO CONSIDERING LATER ON IN THE MANGA? These assumptions are really interesting and insightful! Can’t wait to see how you’d react to later arcs and comparing your assumptions about the elves to what they’re actually like in the manga!
shirtless longhair tatto man is definitely my favourite of the canaries (not counting the captain because he is kinda in a league of his own) IMmense gender on that guy. (also i just noticed that his name immediately gives away his entire Deal , which makes me think he changed it to fit, iconic behaviour)
I love how [REDACTED] is just called,,,,Goblin, suits her to a T 😭 She's my absolute fav of the bunch--actually, they're all my favourites, how can I choose???? ryoko kui is just too good w her chara designs/characterisations
Here's a list of funny descriptions I've seen of the canaries (minor spoilers I guess?) - Stoner - Lesbian Leonardo dicaprio - distressed manager - furry - don't ask about their body count - depressed
Another great essay. You keep surprising me with how perceptive you are - which also speaks highly of Ryoko Kui's writing, what with her being able to skillfully seed all of this. Also, looking forwards to your Witch Hat Atelier era! I've been reading alongside you, and it's quickly become one of my favorite mangas, right besides Dungeon Meshi.
Oh no...I LOVE what you're doing here. This is one of my favorite things to do regarding character design. The shot of the Canaries at the table is what inspired me to finish season 1 (I got a little bored of the first few episodes), and I now realize that there's so much more to this world than meets the eye. Especially regarding _our_ general view of elves.
White haired, dark skinned elf whose name I cannot say here is MY wife!... Great taste. As got your predictions, a lot of it is impressively correct, but there's also a lot of incorrect ones. That's how it usually is with your channel, and that's what makes these videos so fun as a manga reader.
The predictions that are correct are interesting and impressive. As for what you got wrong this time helpfully shows where your wenn diagram of media consumption seems to drastically differ from Kui's.
The captain actually seems to be wearing armour, The elves aside from the captain do NOT seem to have armour so I think that supports your theory about him being a fighter.
I love how the Elves aren't the good guys like a lot of fantasy animes/manga out there. Stories like Delicious in Dungeoon and Skeleton Knight make their Elves not the chivalrous, Godlike, Goody-Two-Shoes creatures. Instead In DiD they are colonizers and in Skeleton Knight they are a lesser class that is captured into slavery. It's a nice twist on a normally favored fantasy race.
10:28 yeah one of the first things you think looking at him is that he's definitely going to be a menace and have a real sad backstory... but nothing prepared for just how awesome his fighting style is and just how horrific his backstory was iykyk 😬🐐
A different idea to go down is that the canaries are spec ops that get to shirk their uniform if it interferes with their combat capabilities. The ear nicks are weird, but it could be due to hazing, similar to obtaining a tattoo in a gang. This would also mean that the captain who has nubs for ears would have the most of whatever those nicks represent making him the leader, maybe they represent the sorties they succeeded in? This would make their communicator, the one with a uniform, the newbie of the group. As it stands I bet all of them are some flavor of spell caster whether it is support buffs, firepower, body buffs into weapons, etc. I'd have an immense doubt that the "handler" would allow prisoners in on political negotiations, and if the captain is a prisoner than what does that make the "handler?"
I think it's not a spoil, but you could think an other way so read at your own risk You have already seen something who looks like the tattoos of "shirtless longhair tattoo man" and if you put 2 and 2 together you can make a very big theory about what are the canaries.
love how much attention you pay to the little details, this is some great analysis you've done! you're the first person i've seen who's picked up on the ear thing. and boy did this video make me kick my feet twirl my hair and giggle, so excited for y'all anime-onlys to see season 2
Considering the title "canaries" and what it might insinuate... I don't think any of these elves committed petty crimes. If what you're saying is true then they should essentially be the equivalent of the Suicide Squad from DC, with or without bombs in their necks. Also considering elves have their own magic system and so far are always shown to be mages, maybe their abilities all somehow involves magic?
Loving the guesses and analyses on all of these characters. Not going to say whether you're right, wrong, or whatever on any of them (and I'm looking forward to your reactions when they show up in season two and you get confirmations/contradictions), but it did remind me that once the anime's done, you really should do a read-through of the Adventurer's Bible. It's a lore book about the setting and characters that includes short comics about nearly every character, mostly focusing on sides of them we didn't get a chance to see in the manga itself. The Canaries all have interesting ones (I'm fondest of Pixie Cut's, but Goblin and Shirtless Longhair Tattoo Guy have some good bits as well), and they flesh out their backstories a lot.
This relates to the first season, so not a spoiler for future Manga readers. I like how each of the main 4 eventually eat the Monster that caused their first death or main Monster trauma. List after dots, because the Dwarf is towards the end of season 1. . . . . . Elf---->Slim her first death Human----> Living Amor, first death Halffoot----> Mimic, the bane of the existence of trap finders Dwarf-----> Hippogriff
I actually think long haired guy is a Druid since he appears to stare happily at the moss in the final shot, Him being a Druid would explain the disinterest in clothing.
i will say the captain is by far my favorite dunmeshi character after reading the manga and i can’t wait to see more of him animated in season 2 and all the other great things that happen in the seckond half of the manga it will be great
There's only a tiny amount of characterization in the Manga. The real interesting stuff is all in the Adventure's Bible. Including why each of them is in The Canaries. Also they play speculation on why the group is called "The Canaries" for laughs.
as a manga reader I don't know how I can make a comment on anything without spoilering. But it's interesting how you can see "Blondie" (I called her Nose myself) as the nefarious one.
I now want Elves with giant clubs or battle axes. Clubs would be fun, because typically they're wooden, and thus have more of a forest feel. Especially if there are vines in the design, like a handle grip!
10:40 Going off absolutely nothing? My dude, "Captain" caught the fairy without looking, he means business. Good catch on the ear notches! I think you are right and are some sort of brand; but I think these are for severe crimes like murder or treason. Elves don't have the population to sacrifice a petty thief by tossing them into a dungeon. Going by this idea, I like to think the cloaks signify a free elf. "Blondie" would be a regular person who has taken this as a career; while "White Hair" and "Captain" have gone in enough missions to pay their debt and are here by choice. So, who is in charge? I think oficially "Blondie", but the opinions of "White Hair" and "Captain" realistically carry more weight. The first because she is more experienced, and the latter because "Blondie" is afraid of him.
A lot of the characters personality and characterization comes in extra content stuff so I'm afraid anime only fans might miss a lot of these characters personalities since we will be seeing them most in the dungeon context. Most of them very likely won't have their backstory revealed in the anime. And yes, there are more elves and they have fun designs as well. There is one in particular I want to see animated and in color.
I love how I cant tell which elve is male or female 😭 Also Im supper hyped for the canaries. I wanna sew the captain so bad I just have the feeling he will be the worst being ever or the opposite but somehow will manage to make me question my swxuality same with the one with tattoo on his body.
Thank you I know the one with the markings on her face is wifu material and right on Marcella Thissle is well..... I still like him maybe I'm more forgiving of him because well Thissle is only young then the dungeon
The Captain is... interesting. He's the only character I can think of off the top of my head that looks *like me* with a bad eye, but the way the fandom treats him after his motive and backstory reveal is so abhorrent that I have to block his name :/
I know its not dunmeshi or even fantasy related but would you mind checking out Black Lagoon and reacting to it? :^) I love your commentary and analysis videos you make and id love to see what you have to say about Black Lagoon, plus, its one of the few anime where (imo) the english dub is better than the japanese dub
I kind of disagree with your take on the shirtless guy. His hair is well maintained but it isn't styled at all, he just pulled it back. He probably uses magic but I feel like he is a wild almost berserker type. Maybe he can transform or something.
I'm surprised sexy tattoo man didn't make you raise an eyebrow at his tattoos. They do be very similar to a certain kind of circular red inscription we've seen in the first season
Spoiler: White Hair: Murder, Abetting murder, Illegal use of ancient magic. Pixie Cut: Human trafficking, Illegal trading of ancient artifacts, Sexual intercourse with non-adults. Goblin: Taking drugs and drug dealing. Tattoo Man: Illegal body modification, Illegal use of ancient magic, Serious assault. Blondie: Blondie. Captain: A former dungeon master of another place is responsible for many deaths.
Spoiler Free Comment {As someone Who read the whole manga for not wait for season 2 } is cool see some prediction being close to future develompent. Yes, chocolate elf is waifu material
