Kevin Gausman continues to be the most underrated player in baseball. Dude strikes out the world and has been one of the best pitchers in baseball for 3 straight years and everyone excludes him in their top 50. Mind blowing.

#5 is crazy for Acuna! You're missing the point on Acuna. No he likely wont steal 73 again but he doesn't have to to be the best. Seriously I mean if the guy goes 40/40 is everyone going to act like "well, I guess he isn't the best player in baseball now". He was so far ahead of the field even a drop off in a lot of categories doesn't mean he is suddenly #5. The guy also has a cannon for an arm which in fielding also matters. #5? #5? Austin Riley at 22 is also crazy. Averaging 36 HR and 99 RBI over the last 3 seasons while playing gold glove defense (was a finalist) only gets you #22? Wow.

Also, I really feel like Ozzie Albies is a top 50 player for sure. Also, Trout too high. Judge WAY too high. Acuna way too low even at 5! Even if he only steals 40-50 bases, he's still top 2! Other than than, not too shabby

Disagree with Bryce moving to 1B hurting his value. He was awful in RF defensively but posted good numbers at 1B last year, could actually end up helping him rather than hurting him

Look, I think this list at least includes the names that should be in the discussion, but a lot of the reasons for the specific ordering seems a bit inconsistent, especially towards the top half of the list. For starters, Ohtani has been without a doubt the best player in baseball for the last few seasons, but this is largely due to how dominant he has been at both batting AND pitching. If you are able to give him points for pitching, then you have to be able to take away said points when he is unable to pitch (otherwise you are being inconsistent and your rankings mean nothing). Ohtani won't touch the mound at all in 2024 and because of this I have a hard time putting him at the #1 spot as I think it is entirely inconsistent with how he has been assessed in the years past. If Ohtani was only a DH these last years and didn't pitch at all, you wouldn't have people labelling him as the #1 player in baseball. If this video was about ranking the top 50 mlb players for the next 5 years, I think Ohtani at 1 would be a fair bet, but no way in hell is he number 1 for 2024. Thats not dissing Ohtani, that is understanding how impactful his pitching is on his value. Second, you utilize underlying metrics (this is a good thing) to inform your decisions on some players such as Freddie taking a slight regression but you failed to use the same analysis on Mookie in comparison to Acuna (who didn't have bad peripherals, but much lower than Acuna's). Acuna's underlying metrics suggest that he actually UNDERPERFORMED in 2023 compared to what is expected for his offensive metrics. Along with this, I agree that Acuna's defense needs to be discussed in this conversation, but Mookie wasn't exactly the best defender in 2023 either (in fact, the main defensive metric Mookie beat acuna in was OAA, but he did so while still being in negative OAA. Acuna's other defensive metrics actually scored much higher than Mookies. This is a really bad narrative that people repeat without actually looking at the stats). Acuna is in what most would consider prime age for an MLB player, which would lead me to expect more consistency here than Betts. Not saying Acuna should be listed as #1, but he is definitely above Mookie for 2024. I could continue on more examples but I think you get the idea. I also think that Michael Harris (A player projections are REALLY hot on for the 2024 season) should have scratched onto this list (not top 25, but definitely someone to look for in 2024) especially with how some of the young guys on this list got points for their early career success. I think it is clear you put effort in this video, but I do think you were a bit inconsistent across the rating scale.

I think its important to note Machado was battling injuries all season and still hit 30 homers with insane defense. He's getting surgery this offseason and will be fully recovered next season so I expect him to go off next year

I cant put soto over judge. the reason why judge wasnt elite on defense last year is he played august on with a broken toe and also had some more dh days cuz of it. also ohtani as a dh only cannot be one. if he could pitch hes one but hes not pitching this year.

Soto is a gap hitter, never been dead pull, yankee stadium might hurt him, the same way it hurt gallo and rizzo (ik rizzo had a concussion this year but ever since hes been a yankee the batting average has dropped tremendously and hes not a .900 ops every season anymore, hes about a .780-.820 now with a .220 ba) everyone always say this abt yankee stadium but truth is it helps rightys who drive the ball more than dead pull leftys. Look at judge, voit, etc

This is a rough rankings. Good effort tho. Shohei is not number 1 as a DH. When you commonly put guys down for their defense you can’t put a DH at 1 lol. Acuna is the only answer for #1 after last year. My 1-5 is Acuna Judge Betts Soto Ohtani but next year if his arm is healthy he goes straight back to 1. Also Olson and Harper got mad disrespected.

Guys remember, he isn’t basing this off of what happened in 2023, he’s basing it off of what he thinks will happen in 2024. Players have down years and breakout years, remember that. Quit hating.

No disrespect and I definitely appreciate his work but he just tried to make the argument that “He just doesn’t see how” Ronald could get any better in ‘24 then he was in ‘23 so he ranked him “5th” even though he’s coming off of an all time historically great season, he’s only 26 years old and he was healthy last year for the first time four years. But he has no problem leaving a soon to be 30 year old Shohei ranked at “1” overall although he actually did get injured with a late season significant arm injury which virtually now gives Shohei 0% chances of pitching this season primarily making him just a DH for the year. But he’s ranked 1st and Ronald is ranked 5th…… HUH🧐 That logically makes 0 sense what so ever.

I’m going Soto at #1. I agree with all the reasons that you gave for putting him at #2, but since Ohtani isn’t pitching next season I am putting Soto in front of him. I don’t see any coherent argument for Ohtani being a better hitter than Soto. Soto is clearly the superior all around batter so, given Shohei isn’t playing in the field, it logically follows that Soto should be #1. If this was simply a “best players” list, I’d put Ohtani at the top, but this is a “best players for 2024” list as I understand it. So if we are solely looking at next years production, you gotta have Ohtani behind Soto.
