That's a cool spot. I have to visit it if I ever get out east. We don't have many fish weirs or traps in Montana. We have Buffalo jumps, although most have been paved up to, fenced off, and artifacts removed. Wish I had a video of the Madison River jump from 30 years ago. When I was one of those exploratory teens. The improvements the state made are cool, but they took away the true primal feeling and nature of what the site was. Kind of cool to see this fishing site has been left a little more primative.

It's really wild back here in that the original settlers, the Puritans, didn't really care about the Native People beyond taking their land and once they had it, forgetting about them. They then had the Revolution and all that more recent stuff to memorialize and are only now rediscovering the people who gave their names to our Mountains, Rivers and even States...and usually when they do it is to try to sterilize the existing memorials or toponyms so they can conveniently forget ALL about them. There are several UNMARKED weirs just like this that I will be highlighting in future episodes all over the heart of Southern New England...and man, would I like to get out your way and see one of those leaps EVEN as it is today! You guys may have a couple hundred years less Euro-American history but you really take care and memorialize what you have. And fishing the Madison is bucket list stuff for an East Coast guy!!
