In this 40 minute completely instructional video, David Kassan takes you through the different steps that he uses to create an all in one sitting Premier Coup painting of the human skull.
Premier Coup is a one shot, first strike approach to direct painting that requires an artist's full concentration and completely deliberate responses to the subject, within a limited time.
The intensity of Premier Coup painting has a rich history dating back to William Merritt Chase, Robert Henri and Edwin Dickinson. To encourage a full understanding of the process, David completely vocalizes his thoughts on how he uses value, texture and brushstroke to turn form as he paints. Included is a rich discussion of the anatomy of the skull and facial bones as well as all of David's materials (palette, brushes, mediums, paints, etc)

David, your are one of my favorite artists and online teachers for ordinary artists like myself. You're such a natural, have achieved such success around the world and yet you seem so humble, down to earth and easily approachable. Does your son show any signs of his fathers ridiculous talent? I bet he does! Also, I too wonder what kind/brand of Binoculars you use and do you always use them? Anyway, thank you for being such an inspiration to me. I'm working towards one day being at least 1/10th as good as you are. Keep your videos and painting coming and thanks so much for sharing them!

If I'm not mistaken, he is first using "Pan Pastels" (which are wonderful, by the way) and applying it with a smaller sized palette knife.

Hi david, do you use binocular to see difuse instead of squinting??

Ignacio Herrera its been 3 yrs so this maybe too late to help. My guess is, he uses binoculars in order to see the subject as close as he works. If u consider how some artists use long brushes to reach their canvas from a distance in order to see & place values or/and highlights.....at the distance they r seeing the originals/subject, he seems to b working through the opposite. Instead of stepping back from the easel to see & then coming back to the canvas to paint, he stays in one place, very close to the work, & brings the subject to him through magnification. As well as obtaining a hyper-focus on the chosen area of value, color, shape, or detail. This is just my guess after following him on line for years. I was unable to find a quote of his own personal explanation.
