If you really want to experience an MLS game with a great atmosphere, you have to go to Nashville St. Louis or Portland. All three are played at MLS specific stadiums and are usually completely filled out. I’ve personally been to Nashville, St. Louis, Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, and Orlando and even though I’m a Charlotte fan I can say that Nashville and St. Louis were the best experiences in best stadiums. New York City FC is also known for its relatively dead atmosphere compared to other MLS teams.

Tom, you and "Z" should have taken the PATH (subway) to Harrison (NJ) to watch the NY Red Bulls. Just a short ride away. Better atmosphere and crown excitement. BAs an added bonus, it is a SOCCER specific stadium - thus it keeps the crown noise in. It is smaller than most Premier League stadiums, at a max capacity of 25,000. On the positive side, the Red & Black color scheme would remind you of Lincoln City FC..

If you wanna go to a real MLS game, come down to Atlanta. The best stadium in the league, highest attendance, and best fans. It's important to recognize that a couple of items that were rated are skewed out of the norm. First, the NYCFC game is in New York so the prices of everything are way higher than in other parts of the country. Buying a ticket in Newcastle or Leeds would be quite different than in London; the same would be the case for the food. Second, NYCFC playing its games in a baseball stadium is an anomaly and has a huge affect on the game experience. Virtually all the teams now have soccer specific stadiums and the few that share do that with an American Football team where their owners own both teams. As a result the American Football stadiums (like Seattle, Atlanta, Charlotte) are not only much better for watching a soccer game but have also been configured to best accommodate the game. For example, the corners of the stadiums are modified to allow more space for corners and the much wider field dimensions. Third, most teams have tailgating and/or pre game rituals that are so fun to watch and participate that don't exist in the UK and they add a whole level to the game day experience. It's too bad your comparison did not take advantage of these and consequently were probably in the worst soccer experience in the entire MLS. This is not a knock on NYCFC fans because I am sure they are going to be amazing when they finally (after suffering all these years) are going to get their own stadium.

As an NYCFC fan, I'm so happy to see you guys came to one of our games! :D One thing I'll say is that NYCFC playing at Citi/Yankee Stadium is a bit of an anomaly in MLS (pending our new Soccer-specific-stadium). If you go to some of the others, the concourses are also pretty cramped - I've been to DC and Philadelphia. Portland also similar, but one of the most impressive stadiums i've seen. I highly recommend, if you want an awesome stadium experience in the US for soccer, go to Portland.

Nice to see some content out of the UK that isn't just "ahaha, the MLS". Fun vid -- hopefully you get a chance at some point to see a game in a soccer stadium here in the US some time. Though in some way you've arguably had the more authentic American soccer fan experience: it being played out of a baseball stadium is probably more common around here, though when it comes to semi-pro and lower you might see games played on turf fields designed to also play football and maybe lacrosse at the same time (so that the whole thing looks like a very grassy carrom board). Most of the games I've been to -- both home and away -- have been conversion fields like that, though I'm also like 6 hours driving out from the nearest MLS team. The USL wants their teams to all play out of soccer stadiums and had set a deadline for teams who are part of it to do that, though they've had to keep pushing it back because of the pandemic. Still, pack any stadium, soccer or baseball, with enough fans, and you'll get a hell of an atmosphere. We're a bit lucky in that we've got pretty sustainable attendance (topping our league despite a pretty crummy start to this season and about a month of away games) and a location presumably set for our stadium to eventually be built. WRT to the prices, it's been a decade and a half since I've been to NYC, but I remember most of the food that was there being pretty comparably priced to what you could get in the stadium. Whatever markup there is for being in the stadium is pretty low considering most other places I've been it's usually double what it might cost for something comparable outside the stadium. I can only imagine that stuff has gone up since I was last there. Citi field is indeed a very nice facility -- while I'm hesitant to give our rivals a state over credit for much of anything, they do admittedly play in a stadium that's very nice and clearly patterned off facilities like it and Camden Yards. Main problem is the visitor's section for soccer games is pretty lousy, as the right corner of the near goal line is not actually visible from it due to how it curves around. Fun to make a lot of noise in, though. Say what you will about the quality of performance in American soccer, we don't love it any less.
@robertdingleton1929
@robertdingleton1929 Год назад
it's not even their home stadium, they usually play in that dump in the bronx, which is a horrible venue for soccer that can't even fit a regulation size pitch.

*To be fair* their new stadium looks like being the envy of the league. I'm not complaining about the Mercedes-Benz but nothing beats real grass-the kind of talent that has one eye toward playing in Europe isn't going to want to risk blowing out an ACL on a plastic pitch.

Dallas is also known for having one of the more crummy stadiums in MLS (it was built in 2005 and was one of the first “large” soccer-specific stadiums in the US) but it is very outdated now. Most seats aren’t covered, the spotlighting is mid 2000s era tech, and the neighborhood it’s in doesn’t have a ton to do (although it is has gotten MUCH better in the last 5-6 years). The fan environment is much better at FCD than NYCFC, at least according to some people that have been to both stadiums. More passionate supporters groups, and louder.

NYCFC's stadium has technically been under construction for almost 10 years, aka since they were founded. The big problem is NYCFC probably should be nicknamed the Wanderers because the past few seasons they've bounced around multiple stadiums in the general area around and in New York City. Honestly I feel like you gotta do this again, but go to an MLS team that plays in an, as it's referred to, soccer-specific stadium. I would suggest Orlando City, but I'm a bit biased towards them. Echo what others said. NYCFC's stadium situation is a fiasco. But there are really good purpose-built stadiums to watch MLS games in. Most years I'd say go to Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City. But we're awful this year and about to have a fan revolt. But Columbus is a great facility. LAFC's stadium is beautiful. The new City Park in St. Louis. Cincinnati has a fine facility. St Paul's Allianz Field also deserves a look. Providence Park in Portland wasn't purpose-built. But its renovations have improved it. And their fans are known for great atmosphere as well. I'm not a fan of promoting teams that play on turf (*coughSeattleandAtlantacough*). But I can't deny those facilities are still well-designed to watch MLS in as well.

You were lucky you came to Citi Field instead of Yankee Stadium, where the sightlines are not as good and the food is a LOT worse. Hope you will be able to make it back when we have our own proper soccer stadium. I've also been to England to catch EPL matches at Manchester City and West Ham. The atmosphere at an EPL match is certainly superior, but we are doing a good job with our young league. I also like that you can hear the Chicken Bucket chant at the 8:00 mark of the video - something the fans named after their favorite food item from Yankee Stadium.

Ah nice one! I wanted to get tickets are close to the half way as possible for the best view. Hahaha I did think some of the chants had their American quirks, thanks for explaining that one for me 😂

True about playing soccer in baseball stadiums. There are a bunch of clubs in the USL Championship and League 1 that haven't got a purpose-specific stadium yet and play in baseball parks. Both MLS and the USL are driving the construction of stadiums so that their clubs can be self-sustaining. But it's a sore point, politically, because so many stadiums across the country are built with public funds for teams that don't recoup the expenses.

If you ever come back to the states for a game you’ll have to go to a soccer specific stadium. I’d recommend Austin or St. Louis, those stadiums are rocking every home game

If it wasn't for the fact that open cup games were on weekdays I'd probably have already booked tickets for Austin. I bet they get pretty crazy over there.

Both of those teams are fresher than a baby's ass. Especially St. Louis. Give them time to suck.

Baseball stadiums are designed to be more of an all in one entertainment hub compared to football stadiums, so thats why there are so many food options and large concourses, because they also have other stuff going on inside on game days.

You need to come to the New York RedBulls WHERE WE HAVE A SOCCER STADIUM NOT A BASEBALL STADIUM (also RedBull arena was called a PROPER football stadium by sir Alex Ferguson when Manchester United played MLS all stars at RedBull Arena in 2011)

I recommend watching a team like the Red Bulls, they’re based in Harrison New Jersey which isn’t really far from NYC. I’ve watched a few matches and they’re decent.

Definitely should get down to Nashville, TN, to see an MLS match. We have the largest soccer specific stadium in North America and the atmosphere is always top tier.

picked the worst stadium in MLS to see a match. Also the pitch size is so small on the baseball field-- it's criminal.

Ehhhh? I’ve gone to hundreds of games and I’ve never bough food at a stadium and I don’t understand why anyone would? You eat before or after.

One reason for the difference in stadiums is American stadiums (modern ones, at least) are built to be self-contained entertainment hubs. Like shopping malls that happen to host sports. This trend started way back in 1992 with Baltimore's Camden Yards and it's only accelerated since. Nowadays, almost all of your really high end stadiums are built for (American) football teams though some (like Miller Park in Milwaukee and the Cathedral of Baseball, Yankee Stadium) come close to that standard. Also, keep in mind that football pricing in the UK is built to be affordable for the "common man" or the working class. American football games don't subscribe to that pricing strategy.

New York is VERY expensive by US standards. Compare, say, Nashville, something similar to Leicester.

Why would you ever go to NY for MLS? Hands down probably the worst MLS stadium/atmosphere experience in the league.

I know NYC was probably a cheap flight option but there are WAY better football specific stadiums that the MLS has. Go to an El Traffico LA vs LAFC. That would be an amazing match to see.

I don't like rhag NYCFC has to play in a Baseball Stadium, but they have a Nice Atmosphere. Now come to Atlanta for a Big Atmosphere.

Your comparison of Leicester and New York is faulty. You should be comparing two large cities like London (arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham) vs New York for a better comparison.
