How to correct overexposed 8-bit 4:2:0 video in Premiere while maintaining colour accuracy and detail.
This video assumes that the footage is overexposed and not blown out where detail would be unrecoverable.
Overexposed video can look bad, particularly when skin is overexposed. If things have gone too far, it may be impossible to correct, but where the values are still only just over 100 IRE (more importantly under 255 brightness with 8-bit footage), some good adjustments in Premiere can make your footage look fine. This tutorials shows one possible combination of effects to use to do this and explains why some other obvious choices don't work.
Thank you for watching and please subscribe!

I've watched over 15 videos on white balance this morning trying to fix one of my clips and this is BY FAR the best video I've watched. Really appreciate the help. Using the RGB curves is revolutionary. Thank you!

I shot an entire series of beautiful streams and when I got it home it was clipping bad. Tried everything and then discovered this video. This video saved an entire day of shooting. I tend to underestimate the power of rgb curves and try to fix my exposure with luma instead. Thanks very much. Certainly earned a new subscriber in me.

Thank you. I'm pleased you salvaged some of your footage! :) There's no worse feeling than finding out you've got a setting wrong or something and it's made your clips useless.

Hey there! I would very much like to know the difference between the contrast in the effects panel you chose, and the contrast in the Lumetri Color panel, Thanks!

Yeah I also didnt understand why you used contrast and brightness instead of going straight to the lumetri panel for it. Is it different somehow?

Great vid, I learned a lot here! However, do you have any idea on how to fix an issue where the 30-minute clip starts with normal exposure but slowly becomes extremely overexposed but the end of the clip? Can't seem to find any tutorials on this. :(

This didn't work for me, not quite sure what I did wrong. I tried to follow all of your steps, but I am new at this and I couldn't locate all of the same panels that you had. The final product looks great though!

This was SUPER helpful! Thank you! One question though, how did you get your Lumetri Color window to have those sliders and color wheels? Mine is only numbers that I can drag, but it's harder to be concise without the slider! :/
@tdcattech
@tdcattech 8 лет назад
If you're using a current version, going to Window -> Lumetri Color should open the panel with the sliders. You'll see the sliders providing the panel is wide enough. If not, just drag it out.

The two videos of yours I watched were wildly educational. Amazing work. I must have watched a 100s of videos on Adobe CC on youtube, but yours stand out for the simple reason that it is so effortlessly down to earth. It is definitely worth the effort you put into this channel. Keep it up and thank you!

what do you use to record audio the opening shot of this video?

This would have been the Rode NTG3. I think the rest of the vid is the same mic but it's brighter and a bit cleaner due to proximity.

I usually watch these videos on mute...adjusting the speed to 2. I can clearly see what they're doing and I'm not subjected to all the ''waffle.'' After watching countless (less than helpful) videos, this method works for me. I'm about to watch twice as many videos in a limited amount of time.
@ZombieBambie
@ZombieBambie 6 лет назад
It actually was the right speed for me to play the video while fiddling with the settings at the same time without having to constantly pause to do what was just explained haha

Very helpful. I am curious as to why you chose curves and contrast as separate effects instead of through Lumetri Color. Is it just preference or do you find it more effective? Thank you!
@tdcattech
@tdcattech 7 лет назад
I haven't managed to get Lumetri colour to do this anywhere near as effectively. Maybe I'm doing something wrong but this combo just let me achieve the look I wanted, particularly with excessively bright skin tones.
@JeanneEisenhaure
@JeanneEisenhaure 7 лет назад
tdcat.com I really like your process. I played with flattening the image and then layering with a darken burn over the flattened bottom image (about at 20%)... so far that's been a great way to get a different look to my contrast. Either way, you gave the base to help get this to more of a log image and help work back up. Thank you!
