A friend of mine and I are starting a small Cerakote business in our town. We work at an FFL dealer and started doing this about a year ago for fun. We've done several of our own guns and a few for the shop we work at, plus recently a few projects for local clients. We appreciate the sharing of knowledge and tips from you. Your videos have helped us out significantly and we've used several of your stencils on our projects. We just wanted to say thank you very much.

Great videos! FYI- I actually contacted cerakote customer service for tech advice on scopes. They responded saying you CAN use a red scotch brite for etching, so if I were to actually proceed with doing my scope, I’m going to follow your recommendation 👍

That's the first time I've heard them recommending a Scotch Brite pad. We never try to give "You must do this or else" advice, but all I can say is we will always sandblast projects in our shop.

I have found that you can measure the objective size and cut some stencils to fit right over the glass. Works wonders on the knobs too!

just saw the scope video, nice work. Have you ever tried the high heat tumbler plugs they sell for the front part? I wonder how it would work.

I love watching your videos,very informative. How does the tape that you use hold up in the blasting cabinet?

It holds up fine as long as you don't sand at an angle underneath it. If something happens, and it starts to come up, we just replace it between sandblasting and spraying.

@@BransonCerakote Regarding the heat tape, I recently screwed up (not too badly) when sandblasting a pistol slide for a friend. Tape peeled up a bit due to my angle and I got the factory polished bit underneath. My friend assured me that it wasn't bad and he'd polish it up, but when you make a mistake like that. . . it just plain sucks.

@@doublebrewski1855 Happens to everyone. When sandblasting with either tape or stencils. We try to get at an exact 90 degree angle to that area before hitting the pedal. It seems like even a slight angle to the tape can force it to lift.

I have people that absolutely don’t want the scope in the oven, even though I never had a problem come of it, but how durable is c series cerakote? I’ve been thinking about getting some for those people.

I haven't sprayed C series in about 4 years because of durability concerns.

Yep. Stuff a paper towel or some cardboard against the glass, and tape it off with high heat tape. Sand at a polymer type pressure. Just give it a good scuff, without going directly at the openings. Bake for 2 hours at 150.

Was there a reason you taped around the zoom ring, or was that also customer preference? Is that necessary to prevent issues with tolerance?

We do it because sand will get in there and grind.

@@BransonCerakote So if you hand prepped the surface with aluminum oxide sanding, would you be able to spray that area? I'm looking at doing the same scope, but I'd like to take the color as far as I can get away with.

@@OneLocalStudent It wouldn't adhere. The surface has to be sanded under pressure to create the correct etch profile.

I would have opted for c-series for use on a scope to avoid putting it in the oven. Thoughts?

C series has very poor abrasion resistance, and only comes in about 35 colors. H on the other hand does extremely well for abrasion resistance, especially when mixed at 12:1, and comes in about 100 more colors. If you stick with C, it also limits the color choices for the rest of your project. We have done well over 1,000 scopes, red dots, flashlights, and lasers with H series, baked at 150 degrees, and have had zero failures. We never try to say "you have to do this", but just try to do videos that show what we do in our shop.

Did you say you bake the scope at 150 for 2 hours? Still flash off for stenciling at 180 for 8-10 minutes for the scope?

That will work. I've not had any issues with scopes at 180 for 8-10 minutes. Even the cheap chinese red dots we have for display.

Very useful information. I have a Sig 556 with the riveted rubber/plastic dust covers on the upper receiver. I think as long as I use Simple Green, an alcohol rinse, tape, blast, I should be able to use H with the low heat method. Does that sound right? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How do u bake it with glass? Seems overkill if u cant bake it ...spray paint it is

We've done well over 3,000 optics and have never had one fail. The glass does fine at 150 degrees. Nothing wrong with spray paint, but the durability isn't there, and it won't match the rest of the project.

Got a quick question how do you degrease the scopes do you put them in acetone or something else. Just wondering how you avoid possibly messing up the glass while prepping.

Just wipe down the outside with a little acetone on a rag.

Do you not ever have a problem with aluminum oxide grains getting trapped in the creases of the scope turrets? I have taped a scope I'm working on tight as possible, I just don't want their adjustments to feel gritty lol. Love your videos my good sir, extremely informative. I'm an airbrush artist, I do bikes n tanks, and lately I been getting massive requests for cerakote, so guess I'm breaking into the scene lol thanks for educating us newbies!😊

Also, it is odd to me to soak then sandblast. With my tanks n helmets it's opposite, helps clean that dust off after sand blasting for good adhesion. Atleast that's what I was taught. Constantly wiping dust off projects before painting or cleacoating them.

If you use H series, yes. We bake scopes at 150 for two hours.

@@BransonCerakote have you consulted scope manufacturers to ensure this won’t void a warranty? I know nitrogen is temperature stable and shouldn’t expand causing a pressure issue but metal does. Thank you for your time.

@@michiganmoto7687 No. I know Vortex doesn't care. The way we handle that question with customers is, we will guarantee the coating, but not the item. Having said that, we've done over 3,000 optics without one failure. That includes everything from $4,000 scopes all the way down to $25 Tascos and $30 eBay red dots. The only things we stay away from are night vision and thermals.

The high heat tape that NIC sells. It's one of the few supplies I pick up from them. The cost is about average as long as you have coating coming to justify the shipping cost. Otherwise, just get powder coat tape off of ebay.

I have a couple questions. When you say a more expensive scope like Vortex, what do the lower end scopes not protect from? Do the pieces not fit as well together or is there a lower temperature tolerance? Lastly, what are you mainly trying to protect most (lenses, inscriptions...etc.)? Thanks for the informative vids!

I've baked $20 walmart scopes, and $20 chinese red dots, with no issues. When a regular scope fails, it's the rings. The nitrogen escapes, and they fog up. I've personally never had any optic fail at 150, either traditional or red dot.

I used to paint cars, mostly personal but I was incredibly anal with the details. May I suggest using a cotton cord for stuffing rotating assemblies and take a bit more time with the tape, it looks sloppy. Also, the use of a lubricant will prevent the adhesion of paint in those small areas, wipe it down with soap and water after the paints dried, and if you used the proper lubricant, specifically one that doesn't react with the paint and doesn't run, I liked vaseline, you should be rewarded with a really clean look. Incredibly fine brush, and a magnifying glass for the vaseline.

I'd be really leery of adding any type of petroleum product to the project after degreasing. Any contamination will prevent the coating from adhering. The way the tape looks doesn't matter as long as the lines are smooth once it's been peeled. We tell folks that come to training. "Don't ever let your customer see the project halfway through. It's going to look like a train wreck." The almost always look fine in the end. If not, you just redo them. Pretty rare for us, but it happens.

@@BransonCerakote I used it quite often when rebuilding interior parts, the black chipping off of a plastic pull nob of some kind was when I found the petroleum method best to use, limiting the buildup of paint was incredibly important or the depressions, usually filled with white paint could be lost forever. These older cars often go through numerous rebuilds throughout their life. Of course, the counterargument would be, if you go through the hassle of painting with petroleum, why not go over it with white? I've worked on parts that had so many layers of paint or had been sanded or sandblasted, I could no longer tell what was what, " is that a push or a pull", so I began leaving the original or add on paint, scuffing, or sanding smooth if it looks wavy, applying petroleum and painting. I just found it delivered the best result and kept future rebuilders in mind Soap and water was great at cleaning but the scope is a bit more complicated, so cleaning the petroleum might be difficult. Many ways to do it and I suppose the parts you are painting will be destroyed before a repaint. I came across your video while doing research on different ways to apply concealment to firearms, I'll soon learn if these methods work...

You don't want to get sand down in the focus ring. The only way to really do that is to tape it off. We go over scope projects in detail with the customer so they know what to expect, and they ultimately make the decisions. The manufacturers get around having to tape the ring off by coating the scope body prior to assembly.

why not just remove the outer turrets, both the elevation and windage are outer caps. the only cap that actually needed taped was the parallax turret.

ABSOLUTELY no frikkin' way I would have Cerakote BAKED on my scope! I'd have the C type Cerakote sprayed on with NO baking. Ask any good scope manufacturer if they would honor a guarantee on a BAKED SCOPE. The answer will be "NOPE".

That's what we love about America brother. We can all have our own opinions and make our own decisions. Not to be confrontational, but we've baked hundreds of scopes, red dots, flashlights etc, and have had zero failures. That includes experiments on $20 Walmart scopes and $30 Chinese red dots.

@@stkesq48 Our videos pretty much all run under the same format. The explanation at the beginning pretty much covers what we are doing, and the video demonstrates it. If I think of anything else during editing, I throw it in a bubble. If anything comes up question wise, I answer it in the comments. I answer every comment that is left on our channel. What exactly would you have liked explained? I'd be happy to answer any questions. We are a very busy shop, and youtube really doesn't make enough money for us to justify the time it takes. We do the videos because we are firearms enthusiasts, and genuinely helpful people. We get contacted on a daily basis with questions, and have no problem taking time out to help people. We understand the videos aren't going to be to everyone's liking, but they are what they are.
