Prep with Me Ep 01 

Yes!!! All Kinder-2nd grade teachers talk about capitalization and punctuation in our school. Yet… my students still forget. I am forever reminding them. We just keep practicing! I think my students are so excited to get something written down that they forget about the conventions.

Girl, it’s just as bad in 4th and 5th grade!!! I looped up with my kids from 4th to 5th and I am a stickler about capitalization, punctuation and complete sentences on every single thing they write and they STILL don’t do it!! It drives me insane. It’s definitely not a lack of instruction and accountability in my situation. I was their teacher last year! Grrrrrrr!!!

Girl! I feel you on the sentences. Idk how they don’t know where a sentence begins or ends. Punctuation is either not there or randomly placed. It drives me nuts! Btw, I’m 3rd grade ELA to 2 classes. 😊

I teach 8th grade ELA. I, too, struggle with this whole idea that students don't know the conventions at this point. I have had to resort to deleting tests and when they don't capitalize their names or the word I. It's definitely a struggle for my kiddos as well.

I teach high school English, and I can tell you that I still have students who struggle with conventions. You'd think some of them had never even heard of capitalization and punctuation before! 😅

my district switched to the new eureka math, eureka squared. I'm halfway through and have no idea where the elapsed time lessons are. and I remember that being a doozy.

I teach 3rd grade self-contained gifted and mine are also horrible with capitals and periods in sentences. They told me, though, that their second grade teachers didn’t really enforce it. 🙄

Do you mind emailing your detailed schedule so I can see how you get it all in? Also, what do you use for your small groups?

They struggle in sixth with it. Super frustrating. I even use punctuation and caps in my texts. (Which is cringe to kids).

I know how you feel about sentences, capital letters etc. because I teach sixth grade and my students have such a hard time writing complete sentences to write a paragraph let alone and essay!! And I ask the same question, what happened from K-5th?📝

Are you doing SIPPS full group? And yeah, I have kids who won't use periods. its so confusing. most of the time I can ignore the mistakes, but periods I'm like...you are old enough to use a period.
