From the date I booked my permit I had 70 days to prepare for the Pacific Crest Trail. I dehydrated all my own camp meals, started training, did a test hike, and organized my first round of resupply packages for Washington and Oregon.
It felt like quite the whirlwind to try to get everything in my life sorted out and everything I needed to get ready for the trail. I really hope I have more time to dehydrate my meals next time, because this was hectic.
In my next video I will show you every single item of gear I started the Pacific Crest Trail with. I changed out some of my items as I went, and I will share a final gear video at the end of my Pacific Crest Trail series.
Thank you so much for watching :)

I'm glad to have seen the shorts of the hike first to see the role that nutrition played in keeping you healthy throughout the hike. Now I can better appreciate the importance of the prep work and planning. Maybe a note that other content creators can take to make their videos more interesting.

Oh wow that’s an interesting perspective! I kept thinking it was a negative thing that I had to post these long form videos later.

Experienced backpacker but new to a plant based diet. Would LOVE some of your “recipes” for your dehydrated meals!

I tried your vegan mac and cheeze recipe because I'm trying to eat less meat, but I was a little suspicious because the ingredients seemed like a strange combo to me. BUT, my teenagers ate the first batch before I could try it or get it in the dehydrator, which means it's a win! I did get to try the second batch before it went into the dehydrator - absolutely delicious!! Can't wait to take the meal on trail!

If there is one food I would eat, it's Walnut Halves, hard to find a more calorie dense food @3000 a pound, more calories than dehydrated food per pound, shelf stable, no cook, 65% Fat + 14% protein + 14% carbs - 7% soluble fiber, a person (or squirrel) could survive on Walnuts.

Hey - great video !! I live just a bit down the Island from you and dehydrate all my own food for my backpacking trips as well. I eat whole food plant based vegan as I also have dietary restrictions. Please feel free to contact me for some yummy and easy dinner ideas... for cold soaking or warm meals. Thank you for all the time you spent to put your shorts out while thru hiking this summer and am really looking forward to the long versions coming out as soon as you get the time😊😊

This was such a great and informative video! I would love to hike the PCT someday but realistically it’s 10-15 years in the future. I’ve always wondered how the heck you organize and plan all the resupply packages and meals, especially if you’re making your own. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Krysta, what are the dehydrator and vacuum seal that you use? I love your videos and this is such a great idea. I’m starting to plan my ‘25 PCT, and I’m definitely willing to dehydrate some of my meals.

Hi! Yay!! Super excited for you! I have a Hamilton Beach dehydrator, I think it was the cheapest one I could find at Canadian Tire. I'm sure there are better ones out there, but it has been working strong for me for 7 years. The vacuum sealer is a Food Saver and I think it's a really good brand from what others have told me. That was a gift from my parents.

i'm doing something similar but I'm only dehydrating the core of my meals since spices don't weigh anything and can be added. So I plan to bring rice and quinoa to resupply with by post. I know I can buy this in town but it's much lighter once you cook it and dehydrate it. I wonder how your planning will work out. I find I only eat about 100g per meal for at least the first 2 or 3 weeks. Then it increases after that or i switch to eating more nuts. Around a month in i'll start eating two dinners a day. I think you'll have more than enough and have to ship ahead your overstock.

That sounds like a good plan you have!! Many thru hikers I met along the way just bought their entire resupply in town and didn't ship ahead anything most of the time. I saw a lot of rice and quinoa in the shops! I actually hiked in 2023 and my resupply strategy worked out great. I did end up having a few extra meals in the first month, but not because they were too big, it was because I hiked sections in less days than I planned! I ended up eating some for lunch or double dinners and that worked out great! By the end, 150g felt pretty small for dinner! I did make some that were closer to 200g and I had those in my final section, that was great!

Just wondering now that you are done with the hike. Are there any meals that you need to take a break from eating since you ate so much of on the hike?
@KrystaNorwick
@KrystaNorwick 6 месяцев назад
Great question!! Pesto pasta. I would not dehydrate that again! But it’s actually mostly the snacks I got sick of eating
