Yes, very insightful! Pres. Benson gave this talk 40 years ago, so we have been given a lot of time to prepare. It is my opinion that the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) is just the beginning of what is ahead. Grateful to receive a prelim warning and hoping everyone will be able to stay prepared. We are all witnessing more of the Signs of the Times. Anyone else notice that one Sign of the Times about the "missionaries being called home," happened with the pandemic?
yes, it was a good reminder and truly felt the spirit whisper to me his words are true. We have always had food storage & a garden but when we moved last November from PA where my husband & I lived all our lives to TX to be closer to some of our kids and grandkids we sold and gave away much of our belongings including giving away all of our food storage (which we never really had to use) because we had to downsize from a big house and 4 acres. THEN the coronavirus hit and shortages everywhere and we did not even have hardly any extra supplies I had a feeling of panic but it did not last long--I knew we would be ok bc the current Prophet said this would pass. But what a great awakening or reminder of how we need to be prepared because the next event may not pass so quickly! As soon as we get into our new house we will build our food storage again and even though we will have a small yard I will have a small garden.
Living in Iowa, we are a religious minority. So it's somewhat amusing (and a little sad) to see the stunned look on the faces of non member friends when they see our food storage kept in the tornado proof part of our basement. We survived on that storage during the 2008 financial crisis. We've built it back up in preparation for what's next.
We did the same. Our property came with a bunker. It has ventilation 2 rooms and electricity. Its 2 rooms. We store stuff. I always wonder should we invest getting i t ready for who knows what?
I'm in rural Idaho and most of the LDS people who see our storage are shocked as they have none. Those are the same people who now think a shot is all they need to be safe
😅👍🏼 Very rare man indeed, to whom I'm deeply grateful. I imagine his post-WWII responsibilities abroad and insights into higher level govt had much to do with his sense of urgency. Too many have for too long been invested in their own comfort. He was willing to risk his own comfort and safety to awaken the people! 🙏😓
General Conference Talk, October 1980. This is a man who was the Secretary of Agriculture under President Eisenhower charged with helping send relief to war torn nations in Europe immediately after WWII. As a living Apostle and Prophet, and as President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he has seen it all, traveled all over the world. He knows what's he talking about from first hand experience. His words of counsel and warning are even more relevant today.
Though regularly applied only to military members, I think it most apt to extend the colloquial damage to you good brother, Thank you for for your service.
I am an Iraq war veteran. Like President Benson, I've also seen large groups of people rummaging through garbage dumps, and widows with many children living in bombed out buildings with next to nothing to eat. It impressed upon me the unbelievable blessings that even the poor among the first world countries have had. It also impressed upon me the very real notion that I should never take things for granted, and should prepare for the times of trial in the last days that will surely come upon all men.
I joined in 1965 and shortly after that learned about food storage. I thought it would be in case of war or like that. Then 2 years ago our Sunday services changed. Now we are "quarantined" and need food and have to have services at home. God knew what would happen and prepared us for it.
Whether you're a member of the church or not, being prepared is probably the best advice any human can receive. President Benson's words still apply today, and forever on.
Especially TODAY!, remember this was giving back in the 70-80s , its now the year 2018!! We can see over the last 40 years how bad its gotten , in the last 10 years its fastly got way bad more so then in the previous ten years! Its speedily coming the last days!

Tonight RU-vid suggested that I watch Elder Holland’s “Tomorrow the Lord Will Do Wonders among You,” which I did. It then recommended I watch this video, which I have quoted from many times as I have diligently prepared my family for physical tribulation. But it was the video it suggested next that really caught my attention. “Preparation for the Second Coming” by Elder Dallin H. Oakes of the Twelve from April 2004. While given decades apart, those three videos, in that specific order, as I am confined to my home due to COVID-19, were particularly poignant and made quite an impression on my mind that I’m being given a message I’d better pay strict attention to. I write this two days before the April 2020 General Conference with great anticipation of what is to come.

@@luckyfish7582 I have moved my family to two acres in rural Missouri where I can grow more food, and paid for it with cash so I am debt free. My house is less fancy than before, but we have the ability to live independently like never before. It brings great peace.
This counsel just keeps getting more and more relevant. I love how Pres. Benson tells it like it is (and will be) having seen the results of war on the people of Europe. I'm going to can something today!
About 6 months after this talk, I was privileged to visit with President Benson and his wonderful wife Flora because his grandson was a good friend of mine and we had travelled to SLC to go skiing and attend some March Madness games. Somehow, we even managed to convince Pres. and Sister Benson to attend a basketball game with us! After the game (and the Bensons treating us to some delicious ice cream at Snelgroves), I needed to call my uncle who lived in SLC and Pres. Benson kindly offered to let me use the phone in his apartment (no cell phones in those days). I was a 17 year old LDS youth at the time and ended up riding the elevator with just him and me in it. I felt he could see right through me, as if the elevator was a spiritual x-ray machine! However, the two most impactful parts of this unforgettable experience were yet to come. First, he took me into his study to use the phone there so I would not disturb his wife. I will never forget what I saw - wall to wall, floor to ceiling bookshelves, with hundreds and hundreds of books of various kinds lining every wall, all of them either spiritual, historical or otherwise instructional in nature. As a young boy whose favorite reading material was Sports Illustrated, this made a profound impression on me. But the second experience was even more memorable and came a few days later when I saw a set of scriptures in my friend’s family vacation home in Midway. The name “Ezra Taft Benson” was embossed on these scriptures, and amazingly they were simply sitting on a table near the front door. As I picked them up, I noticed that they were unable to sit flat because hundreds of separately typed pages of cross-references and other Gospel messages relevant to the chapter(s) in question had been inserted and glued into various parts of both volumes. I had never seen anything like that and could not believe my eyes! I asked Pres. Benson’s wonderful daughter (and my friend’s mother) Barbara, who incidentally passed away less than a month ago, if Pres. Benson had forgotten his scriptures. She replied, “No, that is his set from last year. He gets a new set every year and he gave us that one.” I asked her if he personally re-annotates each new set, and she said yes, that is how he focuses his scripture study. (!!!) Those two experiences of just a few minutes each completely confirmed to me that Pres Benson was truly a Prophet of God. They also indelibly imprinted in my mind just how much he had studied and had really prepared himself for the massive responsibility of that calling.
I remember thinking, this man must have known my great grandfather, who was among the top agriculturists in Minnesota, during Pres. Benson's service as Secretary of agriculture... so amazing to serve the Lord in that capacity while also serving the country's President, the country itself, and the world! He walked in truth and service among all mankind... I love him, and his talks are always a great reminder of the path I want and need to follow... I am SO grateful. 🙏
-Aim to be free of debt -Own a home free of mortgage -Use your property to produce food and reduce your own inflation impact on the economy -Create an eventual year supply of food and living provisions -Prepare to provide for yourself, family and others This is wisdom from the Lord through His servants to us as members. What a solemn responsibility to hold in such a day as this. We should be sharing this talk with all of our friends and striving to follow its counsel
The Church’s research reveals that less than 10 percent of US members have a year’s supply of food and internationally that number drops to less than three percent.
@@stvsanders So all these people planning on going to the house of a member of the Church they happen to know, will be profoundly disapointed. That counsel was not just for the members of the Church, wether they be active or less active, it was for everyone and everywhere. The same counsel is still just as currant today.
Yes it is - God's prophet on the Earth is for the entire World not just us as members of His true Church. However no need to be elitist - if we're not doing what our Prophets have warned us to do for decades and decades then we'll be in the same boat as those "not yet members". So share, serve and love but also be wise in our own stewardship for ourselves and our families - get growing and saving NOW. Don't wait for tomorrow y'all. I shattered my skull seven years ago and was in a coma for two weeks. While I was in a coma I saw a small spec of heaven he gave me a date and told me to get my patriarchtical blessing. I can’t describe heaven to you no matter how hard I try due to the fact the lord wanted only me to see it. If you don’t believe in the Lord You’re missing out so many blessings he has to offer you. I testify that he is the all living God and that the second comming is near. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ amen.
I feel emotional and my body almost shake to the core listening to these precise, descriptive down to the minimal details, prophetic words coming from the mouth of the Lord's dutiful representative, decades ago; picturing the exact scenarios we are experiencing at this very day ! Praise to the man who communed with Jeovah !
Many years ago, I decided I never wanted to get trapped in credit-card debt. I followed Church leaders' counsel not to buy on credit the things we couldn't afford. I'm thankful that I have no debt in my life. I have little in the way of material goods, but I have peace. I would like to add that tithing is a vital part of any preparation.
He didn't personally sign your mission call. A little machine called the "autopen" signed it using one of 3 different signatures Benson had used in both black or blue ink. These were changed weekly to give the impression that Benson personally signed your call.
He came to the mtc when I was there. The spirit with him was so strong. He had a beautiful smile. I was able to sit right in front of him during his brief message of love for us.
I've always had a huge food storage stored in the #10 cans from the church. Last summer I had to down-size and was forced to give my food to members of my ward. When the virus hit this last spring I took my savings and started over. This time my children are grown adults, so my strategy is much different but I have my year's supply back again, but in mylar bags this time because the cans are no longer available. I'm still adding every month because I don't know who may need help when the time comes when I need to use it. My children think I'm wasting my money but the spirit told me to do it, so I did. :o) A one year supply for just me and my one adult son that lives with me doesn't take up as much space, I just don't have a craft room anymore. lol It can be done if we are willing to sacrifice the pleasures in life: the new t.v., that vacation we wanted to take, upgrade on a newer car, ect. It's scary not to have my savings but I figured I couldn't eat it. haha
COVID-19, year 2020 watching this. I was also a welfare services (medical) and proselyting missionary after I converted in a third world country. Now, in USA, we are applying those same basics for self reliance and food storage in 2020. General Conference is this weekend; I wouldn’t be surprised if Pres. Kimball’s and Pres. Ezra Taft Benson’s talks will be referred/quoted. A lot of cultures (incl mine) teach about work, growing gardens and food storage and the church reinforces each teaching. We can grow our own gardens, learn to fix things ourselves and make jellies, breads or other foods to store while we are staying home during this pandemic. 🌸🌼🌻🍇🍓🥦🥕🌽
And even more now that the riots took place. Wait until the November presidential election, and what ends up happening to that president and the 2 after. Prophecy is being fulfilled. This decade will not be a pleasant one for the saints, nor our country, nor the world for that matter. But we know how the story ends.
I sure wish I had a years supply of canning lids and jars like I did during Pres. Benson’s time. Almost impossible to find any since COVID. I’m old now but my daughters can everything available.
I some how have faith, that whoever is in Nov 3... that riots wont start. America needs to stay calm. Have faith and pray. Hopefully Joe Biden will be that men . He has faith and Christ behind him. Dont believe the lies they spin around him!
I'm watching during a time Americans are locked down, masked, prohibited from gathering in large groups, unable to find many items in our groceries, and not attending school. Worse things lie before us, but if we follow the prophets we will survive..
Tears blinded my eyes as I seriously listened to our dear Prophets admonition. All the words that Pres. Benson have spoken is and are now getting real...but..some of us did not give heed to our Prophet's warning! I know from the bottom of my heart that, this is now the time which Pres. Benson was referring to...We Thanked Thee O God for the Prophet who guides us in these latter days!
This talk was shared with me by a sister in my ward. She said she realized I had been struggling in my calling as RS president, trying to respond to several families’ requests with love while reminding the adults that “want” and “need” are different and my denial of wants was not “mean, hateful” or best of all, because I didn’t understand the duties and responsibilities of my calling. I have decided I am going to make this a part of our food storage lesson on 5th Sunday.

I m not LDS. But have followed him. His wisdom is priceless we have ben preparing. Almost debt free. Hopefully soon mortgage free. Food storage for us made sense. I learned a lot of skills. When was this talk given?

I have had a garden allotment for about 2-3 years now, and I have enjoyed this blessing, and shared too. The person whom has her place in Christchurch, kindly let me have this garden space. This has proved to be an absolute blessing in every way. I may not have chickens, but I do have plenty of fresh juice to enjoy. This also includes Apples, too.
2020 And I feel the heaviness of his talk. His experience what my beloved German country had suffered and recovered from, he has never forgotten. I m Protestant Lutheran. 30 yrs later I m in Ut and a 1st generation American and proud to be. My German grandfather, a POW for six yrs, was rescued by the Americans. Forever thankful so I the grand daugther could be raised under him and my grandma. Both RIP... We all can learn from each other. Respect each other. Love each other. My conscience is cut to the quick for not following this counsel. I loved President Benson. Even now, while listening to his words, bitter tears brim my eyes. Since all of this unrest began and has accelerated at a mind-whirling rate, the inspired counsel I have heard my whole life (and largely ignored by hearing and not doing) has been ringing in my ears and burning my heart. What ABSOLUTELY terrifies me is the danger of physical violence from my OWN COUNTRYMEN...from within a DIVIDED HOUSE...simply for deciding to exercise my God-given and Constitutionally protected right to peacefully assemble; to peacefully speak freely without threat of violent reprisal by a mob or unjust "legal" action by corrupt leaders backed and advised by the sleaziest "legal council". I don't know how I would feel right now if I were "perfectly" prepared as the Lord's mouthpieces have counselled us to be. Those kinds of preparations, though vital, seem to pale in comparison to the kind of preparation--what kind it is, I have NO idea--we need to defend ourselves from our own countrymen. How do you prepare for something like that?
I continue to add more food into my storage each year. All my non member neighbors know that I store food and kid around that if they need food they know where to go. I don’t mind sharing in a real emergency but we really need to encourage 😢 people around us to store for their family.

I know this message to be true as evidenced by the profound spirit associated with it as I listened. What a comfort to have had and have good, honest people testifying to these truths.
I not a member but yet I was wise enough to get allotment I observed global crises of this days my mother is a member I knew she had a food storage I built a garden it’s not easy maintenance of allotment at times my health tries over throw me. It’s exhausting but yet I hang on keep doing a bit there and a bit there one step at a time and also rest a little to enjoy the birds
Ezra Taft Benson what a man I am so grateful for the council we have from the Apostles we are to learn from him. We are heading for times like this again.
I saw this video link as was prompted to click and watch it. I'm very glad I followed that prompting. It confirmed the fact that living prophets are here to tell us the will of the lord and we can not afford to ignore their council.
What a prophetic message for the days we are living in! Our Savior sees what we are going through today, and revealed some of these truths throughout the years. Wow. Grateful for our church leaders and our prophet.
It is not over, much of the prophecy for the days of tribulation is yet before us. The famous virus is mutating. It is out there, and who but God can make it go away ??

This is a great talk. I wish that people today tried to live within their means today. Our society would be a lot better. We will see great suffering because of our debts. Remember that debt is slavery and independency is freedom. The times of tribulation is now here, are we read? Many of us are not, they cannot pay their debts, they don't know anything about farming, they are so far from being prepared. Brigham Young told the saints to be independent but this vision seams to have been lost. The pioneers had this vison. Ezra Taft Benson had this vision but the message has been forgotten by many. Wake up! the voice of warring from a prophet! Become as independent as you can it might not be to late.
lived in post world war 2 Germany. food insecurity was a daily struggle. I have had foodstorage for 29 years. never regretted it and in the last 10 years increased it. now people who laughed wished they had foodstorage. follow the prophet and you will be prepared.
Thank you God for the Truth & warnings before hand of what was in store for us. His counsel was honest and sincere. I will not cancel his honesty and concern for the wellbeing of us and our families. I am Thankful this man was not troubled with the duality that is upon our world and leaders today. Grateful for his service to the Lord and caring for his brothers and sisters.

What a wonderful message that again finds meaningful application during our time of Covid-19 in 2020. This is a day of tribulation, and there will be more to come. This is another opportunity to heed the words of loving prophets. My testimony continues to be strengthened by the wisdom and foresight of the Lord.
This message is so timely as it was back in 1980 it is now in 2022, actually even more timely now with all that we’re facing in our country, and all the signs around us (and the rest of the world) the times of tribulations prophesied for the last days, before the 2nd coming of the Lord, are really near, in my opinion, we don’t have another 40 years!
