My first time exhibiting my 009 layout in a suitcase, Gofod Tynn, at a model railway exhibition!

Be A Legend: shop.thatmodelrailwayguy.com/...
If you followed my recent 009 series where I built a layout inside a suitcase, you'll know a big part of that project was to get Gofod Tynn complete in time for it to be displayed at a model railway exhibition.
This would be my first time at a model railway exhibition as an actual exhibitor and I was determined to put on a good show. So in this more casual video, I take you behind the scenes to show how I prepared the layout for it's very first show and what backups I put in place to keep everything running smoothly before heading off to the show itself.

A really enlightening video. I had no idea it would be so much work to set up and operate in an exhibition setting. You know what I found interesting? Seeing Gofod Tynn in context with people around it. It is a tiny layout, indeed. Many thanks once again.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

Haha, yep it's a pretty small layout but that was definitely the idea with it. It just goes to show how much you can fit into a small space with 009. Thanks for watching 😃

Yes I really wasn't expecting the layout to be so popular. I think it helped that we were in a really prominent position and the suitcase itself is a fun selling point. Thanks for watching 😃

Thanks, I really had no idea how it all worked beforehand so I figured it might be interesting to see behind the scenes. It was great that so many people enjoyed Gofod Tynn too. I was hoping for a positive reaction but I wasn't really prepared for just how enthusiastic lots of people were. Thanks for watching 😃

It was a really fun exhibition and it was great to meet you and see the layout in person having watched the build process. A shout out to Al who is a great wingman and was clearly getting the bug after only a few hours. It was also nice to get my photo in one of your videos having watched so many of them! Well done.

Really good to see how to prepare a model railway for a show without making and exhibition of yourself. Some great tips , especially with the lighting, and I love the wagon repair scene. many thanks for a great video.

Awesome, I hope you all have fun! Before I did this show I was looking to see if anyone had made a behind the scenes video like this, just to get an idea of what it was like. I couldn't really find much out there so I figured it might be interesting and useful for those in similar situations in the future. Thanks for watching 😃
@jasonpierce-newmodelbarmy3394
Great video and very representative of the do's and don'ts of exhibiting. Throat lozenges are useful, but I guess you'll know that by now...and your own Tea mug, to keep lubricated! I totally agree that it's important that you have something running all of the time if possible as that is what the punters want to see. I do about three exhibitions a year and I exhibit as an individual and not part of a club, as a sole operator they are really enjoyable but I'm quite knackered by the end of each one!! Keep up the excellent work.
@ThatModelRailwayGuy

Yeah considering I was going in with very little experience I think we nailed all the main things. The only thing I would change for next time would be swapping out locos/trains more often for those who were coming back round. That said most people wanted to see the Double Fairlie run anyway! Evening! I'm part of a group who maintain and operate a HO layout based out of Bath, and we've just had our layout attend the NMRA convention out in Crewe last weekend. In spite of it being a larger layout with more people involved, it's a similar experience in just having the audience watching trains go by and wearing yourself out talking to people (not helped by our moving carfloat that features on the layout), and just being on one's feet all day! In spite of the hard work involved, from transport to troubleshooting, it really is great fun at the end, and one gets an immense sense of pride when their work is on display to the public. Hope to see you and your wonderful layout on the circuit soon! Best wishes

@@ThatModelRailwayGuy I saw a discussion somewhere where they said that owners should allow trains rather to run than do operations (running allows you to focus on the guests and endless questions) and trying to do operations brings in other problems of trains getting stuck , the hand in the sky etc. I know some layouts are only for switching etc. But I would agree to keep ops on a more personal level outside of exhibitions.

Excellent video! I have followed the entire building series of Gofod Tynn and this has inspired me to get into OO9! With regards to DCC’ing your layout, is there any tutorial on existence out there on how to add DCC decoders to both the Small England locomotive and the Kato 109 Chassis? Additionally, what decoder did you use? Many thanks, from Australia 😁
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
That's great to hear! As far as adding decoders to the Small England and Kato chassis, these are both videos I'm hoping to do in the future. You'll need decoders with wires and and for the Small England you want the smallest decoder you can get. For the Kato chassis it depends a bit more of what body shell you're putting on top of it. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Looks like an awesome weekend 👏. How do you go about getting it into the exhibition do you have to apply or were you invited? Did you have to pay any entry fee?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
In this instance I volunteer at the Spa Valley Railway so was able to talk to the organisers about the layout while I was building it. Once it was done I sent over some photos and they kindly made space for it. During the show there were organisers for other exhibitions looking around too and some of them approached me to invite the layout to their own shows next year. Generally though if you're thinking about displaying a layout, contact a few local shows with photos, some basic info and the dimensions of the layout for their consideration. Sometimes it just comes down to having something bit different - ie: they don't want to have hundreds of BR 1960's steam layouts. Gofod Tynn is good in this way since its 009 which is already a bit different and has the added selling point of fitting inside a suitcase which is a fun way to display a layout but also means it takes up less space. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃

Odd question, but when you go to exhibitions, do you pay for a space to set up or do they pay you to display a layout or is it all volunteering work?
@ThatModelRailwayGuy
@ThatModelRailwayGuy Год назад
Hey Alex, it depends on each individual exhibition. In this case I'm a volunteer at the railway so they were keen for those already involved to show off their work. I don't know of anyone paying to be part of an exhibition as usually it's down to the organisers to choose what layouts they want to feature. I imagine some of the more high profile exhibitions might pay for a specific layout to attend a show almost as a headliner and a lot of exhibitions do cover expenses if you're travelling from further away. Hope that helps and thanks for watching 😃
