Jessi shares how to give an easy, nutritiously complete, and enriching diet to parrots and parrot type birds. --- Sponsored by Audible --
Pellets should make up 70% of a parrot's diet. Amounts will look different depending on the size of the bird and the size/shape of the pellet used.

I'm always so impressed by the way you care for the animals. As a child my grandmother said to me regarding pets that I should always keep in mind that although they were just a part of our lives, we were the main focus of theirs. She explained that they don't have school (work), friends, hobbies or other distractions and it would be unfair for us to spend even a day ignoring them. Throughout my life I have tried to always remember that lesson she imparted. I think of that when I see how focused you are on thinking of the daily lives of the animals under your care.

yes. I have always wanted a parrot. but since I'm gone 8 hours a day I feel it's not fair. I've been looking into social independent birds that wouldn't mind being home alone but there isnts too many. any suggestions? I was thinking a blue headed pionus. they would get weekends of e richment and I'd rotate the toys and food hiding enrichment. In the evening would get 3 hours of interaction too.
@BioBush
@BioBush 5 лет назад
@@wildog47 Pionus are parrots too, just smaller! So all the parrot things like intelligence and time still apply. If I ever got a bird it would probably be a zebra finch. Shorter lifespan, less social. And I would adopt, because there's so many birds out there whose guardians are looking to rehome.

@@BioBush A well cared zebra finches can live up to a decade & more right ?
@BioBush
@BioBush 5 лет назад
@@sharathyadav954 I think so. Their average lifespan is about 5 years, so a long-lived one would be a little more than double that. But just like every human doesn't live up to 100+ years old, not every bird reaches the species' maximum age. Good question!
@sharathyadav954
@sharathyadav954 5 лет назад
@@BioBush Yea, compared to female finches especially egg laying one, male finches are more potential to live longer if they are kept in good conditions like healthy diet & natural enrichments, exercise(flying), sleep(12 hrs), well cleaned husbandry, although if they are not inbreed birds from good family gene. these is what I collected the feedbacks from finch keepers. Of course there are so many other facts can also impacts on their lifespan. Like they can be very easily stressed out & very skittish birds. But I love them 💖

You're such a joy to watch. I was raised with a strict religion: You NEVER get an animal that is completely dependent upon you for his/her (never "it") every need, without making CERTAIN you are committed to busting your backside to MEET HIS/HER *EVERY* NEED for his/her ENTIRE LIFE. And I have never let any of them, or myself down. And they are the great joy of my life. I've been SO fortunate to advocate, educate, fundraise, rescue & rehab, volunteer and work with some of the most fascinating, incredible and inspiring people. It's also been lots and lots of heartache. I had to stop after 30 years due to burnout and serious PTSD. One of the things I love about Jessie so much, is that she is still able to maintain a good attitude about people. I became suspicious of everyone I didn't know. You're fabulous, Jessie. Hey Jessi, Most bags of parrot food (seed or pellet) will say to have fresh food available to them at all times. Just wondering what your take is on that? It seems in the video you imply that they only have access to food at breakfast and at dinner, about 6 hours apart, with treats (and periods of a little healthy hunger) in between. I agree with this, but would also feel hesitant leaving my budgies without access to food. Assuming that they do eat their fill at breakfast and dinner, is it okay to not have food available for them at the other times? Or do you still leave something available for them? Thank you! (For everything you do. :))

Great video!! I’m getting two budgies in a few weeks, and though I have done plenty of research, I’ve been having issues getting all my facts straight as far as seeds vs parrots due to all of the opinions. This video was very helpful 😊 Just one question about fruits and veggies: is it safe to feed regular fruits and vegetables, or do you need to buy organic? Just wondering because I wasn’t sure if insecticides and stuff on produce can be harmful to birds, especially smaller birds. Thanks! 💜

@RMacca

I don't have birds but I'm a horticulture student and I would definitely buy organic if you can. Birds are so sensitive and sometimes even something that might not hurt us could hurt an animal. Even if it doesn't hurt them at first, some chemicals can build up in an animal's system over time and lead to illness or early death. If you can't buy organic I'd suggest feeding with fruits and veggies that can be washed and peeled to prevent any spray residues from being eaten. Might seem excessive, but it's better to be safe than sorry in my opinion.

Hi, I rescued 5 or 6 year old Indian Ringneck last month. He's had a succession of owners and has either been mistreated or ignored as he's not at all comfortable around people. When I took him off his last owner he attacked the bars whenever she went near the cage. After a week he would accept treats from my hand through the bars of the cage and had stopped squaking in panic whenever I approached the cage. The cage was tiny. I've since encouraged him into a Liberta Cambridge 2nd edition. It took him a few days to feel comfortable enough to come out on his own. He now comes out and has a flies a few laps around the lounge. He absolutely panics whenever I put my hand in his cage to change paper or the water in his bathing dish. I know that it will take some time to develop a bond of trust before working on targeting and eventually stepping up but I'm concerned about getting him to return to his cage at night. A few times he's refused to return to the cage and i've had to sit up all night in a darkened room to make sure he doesn't chew an electrical cable in my absence. Could you point me in the right direction please? I'm determined that the poor wee guy's days of being banded from home to home and mistreatment are over.
@animalwondersmontana
@animalwondersmontana 5 лет назад
Good job making so much progress with him already! I'm so excited for your future together. In this specific case I would recommend having a vet or other experienced bird handler come to your home and having his flight feathers trimmed. I don't think it's cruel if there is a serious reason for it. They will grow back in 6 months and by that time there's a good chance your relationship with him will have progressed to the point that he will step up on you and you can safely return him to his cage at night. By trimming his flight feathers this once you will be giving him a great gift of stress free flight in the future. The most important action to take when his feathers are trimmed is what happens immediately after. Have the vet use a towel to restrain him, don't allow him to see you during this process, once they're done have them place him on the floor in an area where there's nothing to climb, like the kitchen, and remove the towel. You will be there to rescue him from the floor. Most parrots are scared of being on the floor and will do almost anything to get up higher, including stepping onto a hand or arm. Slowly but confidently present your forearm for him to step onto, praise him gently and return him to his cage. By doing this you've established that you are safety. During the next 6 months use a stick to get him to step onto from outside his cage and slowly progress to using your hand. A great way to encourage your relationship with him along is to use the stick to have him step up from somewhere high, place him on the floor and offer your arm or hand for him to step onto from the floor. Always give him a reward when he steps up. The reward could be a treat or it could simply be the safety of his home. You know him best, so you can choose his reward. If you absolutely don't want to trim his flight feathers at all, your other option is to start working on a stick step up behavior. This could take some time, so be prepared for it. Also, parrots can't see in the dark, so if it's completely dark in your home at night you can safely go to sleep during the darkest part of night and set your alarm for sunrise to ensure he doesn't get into trouble or danger if he is left out at night. Good luck and have fun! You're doing great so far!

Aww, Joy's chest still lookin' bare.... How does that further affect their health, to have plucked patches? Do they get significantly colder, is the skin tender, do they pick at the skin when they can no longer reach feathers, does it expose them to more bacteria? It's so interesting to me that we can clearly see a parallel for human anxiety and self-harm problems with these kinds of animal health concerns, and I'm very curious about the process for them.

They definitely need to be eating fresh produce. While they might be fine, and might live a long life, no fruits and veggies drastically increases their chances of nutritional imbalances, and reduces their lifespan. Some birds can be very picky about produce. Sometimes they prefer it lightly cooked, or warmed up, or chopped. Something I've found that works really well is to blend a wide variety of fruits and veggies, add oats to the mix until it holds shape, mold it into balls, and bake them for about 30 minutes at 250 degrees. I've had great success with this in budgies, cockatiels, macaws, and many birds in between :)

I just came across your channel and found the meal plan very helpful, thank you. I also love the perches for the macaws and was wondering if you made those or where I may find those. How much time do your Macaws spend on their perches vs in their cages?

I would feed my birds cold pressed pellets. They have more nutrients than dry pellets.

Videos like this always make me wonder what’s the food bills like for all the animals? And vet bills too. It must be so expensive to look after so many animals

Is having different textured perches in a play stand helps them thrive?

If we have parrots again, can we give them half pellets and half freeze dried blend of veggies for parrots? I know it is more expensive than making them on our own, but in this case we might choose saving time over saving money. Then also mix in a small amount of freeze dried medicinal plant parts for parrots like certain flowers and roots to treat/ prevent minor aliments?

Do you cook yams and sweet potatoes before you give them to the birds? I've heard that they should be cooked. Also, Harrison's and TOPS pellets are good also. My birds love the TOPS pellets.

I usually just get store bought parrot food for African Grey's and then give him veggies and fruits every day. I give him raw peanuts with the shell as a treat. I don't give him any pellets, should I be changing that?

I've been looking for the healthiest pellet for my sun conures .... What do you think of Harrison's Organic pellets or Bird Tricks Organic Cold Pressed pellets? I can't decide which would be best for my sun conures (Sol and Luna). In the morning they get chop and evening pellets and sometimes seed( not often). Also is it beneficial for them to get Red Palm Fruit Oil?

Recommending a book by K. A. Applegate huh? A fan of both sci fi and animals huh? I have a sneaking suspicion we grew up on the same book series, Jessi ;)
